Singapore Airlines (SIA) says it has taken "a more cautious approach" to managing turbulence during a flight. Not only will hot beverage services be stopped, it will also suspend meal service. Crew members must now buckle up when the seatbelt sign is on. SIA says it will continue to tell passengers to do the same during turbulence. The airline adds that it will continue to review processes.

I think we should give credit to the Thai authority for the handling of this SQ 321 incident. Suvarnabhumi Airport had less than 2 hours to prepare for the emergency landing yet everything was there when SQ 321 landed. The aircraft parking lot was assigned , 3 different colours tents (presumably for different classes of injuries)were erected , medical personnel were in full force and ambulances were in line and ready. Well done!

From the local news, the Airport Authority of Thailand were informed 15 minutes by the captain before landing. We have emergency rescue teams located adequately in every parts of a province so they are quite fast and spontaneous in responding to emergency situations. On a Recent direct flight to Vancouver from Changi, during turbulence with seatbelt sign on, many passengers stood up to use toilets. Some even opened overhead bins to take stuff out. All of them completely ignored cabin crew's request to sit down. A few were even walking up and down the aisles aimlessly. After a while, cabin crew had enough and gave up.

From my experience flying on SIA or Scoot, if I recall correctly,the pilot always announced that hot drink or meal service will be temporarily suspended when there is air turbulence and air belt sign is on. The pilot will ask all including the crew to belt up; so I don’t think it is some new procedure to suspend meal service during turbulence. It is just unfortunate that the incident happened in the middle of the serving a meal .

I only remove my seat belt when I need to go to the restroom. Most of the time, the issue lies with the passengers themselves. I recently returned from a trip to Hong Kong and was seated in the aisle. On both the departure and return flights, the person on the right side of the other aisle seat did not put on their seat belt during takeoff until they were noticed by the flight attendants. During my flight to Japan earlier this year, there was a mother who brought like 4 baggage / luggage into the flight and were very busy carrying down down searching for stuff after stuff (non stop). She was also hanging a phone on her neck which hit my head because she also had baggage on top of me despite we were in different rows.

Msg is simple, always fasten your seatbelts. Don’t walk around the cabin unless it’s really necessary. No matter how sophisticated we think we are, the forces of nature are beyond our wildest imaginations. Flying at heights of 30-40 thousand feet above ground is an incredibly wonderful yet so challenging task. Useful consciousness at such cabin altitudes would be few minutes. It’s that dangerous. But we have managed to develop absolutely mind blowing technological marvels called modern aircrafts to travel at such altitudes despite horrendous weather conditions. All that is asked of you is just to sit and put on your seatbelts and not walk around unless it’s a must. How hard is that? Harder than blaming the aircraft manufacturers, pilots, cabin crew and airlines? How juvenile the world has become?

I was on Singapore airlines from Manchester to Singapore (both ways) in February, the seat belt sign came on often and when it did, all services were suspended, crew and passengers alike were belted in. Singapore airlines is one of the most cautious and safety conscious already. @vincecarlo you need to have experienced retired pilot in your friends zone, to learn that the "air bubbles" (hange of pressure, basically like sidden vacuum)and cloud related wind streams (also due to pressure) existed and exist. Experienced pilots just don't go to that zone, which they receive before the flight and during the flight from the traffic control continuously. The clouds are used by delta planners to find the uprising stream, so they can fly, and that is how they move in their air: from one stream, to another. Aircrafts scip it, if some private jet owner can enjoy risky entertainment, big planes just avoid it. All pilots have to be trained for these situations! These situations exist in the air every single day around the globe! Just nobody goes in! I used to be in absolutely similar incident in the same tropical zone. Ther is no fun at all..In my case, the pilot accepted departure despite taking an opportunity to delay..it was clear that we are to fave turbulence and problems in the air..we got it, same as here, but god bless, our pilot at least new how to deal (switched off evrythin, we slides down, all scared, all screams, but then he launched manual control and returned us to the route, despite some other problems, we landed without any physical damage, spending almost 2 more hours on the air, which we could easily spent on the ground if delayed, and have no problems dueing the flight). All that is known and dexisted always in the air..here, with sq321 we have 2 issues: something went wrong in communication between services and board regarding weather condition and having accurate preasure map and second: pilots themselves..one of them is the reaosn of the injuries (literally did wring mmanipulation in the cabin causing the tilt and severe drop.of the machine) and rhe other onr who stabbilised and landed. You have not been in such a situation, you cannot know how that happens in the air. I was. And yes, make friends with pilots, otherwise this climate collapse narrative will complitly finish your brains. Also take a look what the Tropical storm belt is - it's special low pressure zone, a line, which is a give at certain time per year in Thai, Vietnam, Malaysia, India.. pilots, flying in this part of the world must be trained for this particular aspect. Somebody has not so much training.

The claim is air turbulence is occurring more often. Airlines should check their flight path to see if the aircraft flys over huge solar panel farms. We are told by scientists that heat from a solar panel farm can change the molecules in the air above the panels which causes the air to become thin and rise upwards and form what they call “Heat Islands”. Research is being carried out on the effects of heat islands and whether they rise higher enough to affect aircraft. Research is difficult because heat islands can’t be seen and it’s uncertain how they can affect the weather. There has been resistance in some countries to the installation of large solar panel farms because of the unknown effects of Heat Islands.
@Timesobserver_Xenia
@Timesobserver_Xenia Месяц назад
Interesting point. Still,here sq flew over the water, close to the shore, but still it was the sea under, means, no solar panels. The area has near tropical belt of low pressure. It shall be known by all pilots flying in this area, what brings us to the human factor: control tower and pilots. Here we have to search the sequence of actions and communication. A mistake is there. For the note, I personally was in similar aircraft event, despite the pilot did the job to fall correctly (with engines off and no speed) and changed to manual control right after to stabilise. Scary for sure,trauma - yes, injured - zero. Human factor and, perhaps, a need to check the machine.

The question is: were the engines off or on? When I was in such an incident we had all electricity shut off and pulery stopped machine. I still do not know clearly if that was intended by the pilot to avoid complications, or that was caused but the air pocket (no frequency possible in such air bubbles), but that helped us, as I understood later, to fall without roughness, in some minute or less the place was stabilised and moving horizontally again ..pilot switched to manual control. This was explained to me by my friend - retired pilot in the same region, after the event, when we discussed what happend. And yes, it's nearly the same region (Vietnam) where it happened, in June 2019.

Aviation industry depends on the people’s faith in safe flying. That why so much is done to make sure passengers feel safe flying. Best example would be 9/11 attack and how aviation industry took a downturn afterwards. Lot of people lost jobs and the industry bled so severely for a decade. Hence called the “lost decade”. Just when the industry started booming after COVID 19 pandemic, the industry can’t take another blow with accidents making people feel less safe. Therefore when it comes to airline industry, the airlines apologize for the minute things that compromise passengers safety and take drastic measures to make sure such things would never happen again. That’s the culture in aviation. Should respect that.

It's a wake up call to airlines that there are limits to in-flight service competition. The luxury experience of first class might turn into something very different if safety no longer is a priority. A suite belongs in a hotel. Hot beverages and the freedom to roam about the aircraft in-flight has to be minimised legally. Overhead baggage compartments should be auto locked before landing and only unlocked when the aircraft comes to a complete stop. Cabin crew advice should become instruction with consequences if ignored.

They drop them lower usually, plus they are marked and very obvious in the sky. Or these crazy radar clouds, as if somebody created chessboard in the air. Aircrafts pass by next to in, not in..air bubble, or air pocket is the correct description..surely, if the cloud is created, thdn the original cause is in its creation, but it is still air pocket. There is near tropical belt of low pressure, means the air pockets existed and exist in this region even without manipulation..it is rainy season now in the area. I used to be in similar event, in the falling aircraft. The pilots have to be trained for this, if they fly in Thai, Vietnam, Malaysia etc. In my case, even though we would never experience the air bubble if the pilot didn't take risk (delayed the departure), he still knew how to manage the situation. We had no injured. To tell shortly: he switched off all electronics and let the plane go down, in some time he turned on manual and stabilised the aircraft. We had sea belts sign turned on in advance, I suspect the pilot saw something in front of him or on the map. Still, those who were not fastened,had quite a moment to do so when the fall began. Here,in Singaporean airlines case, very likely a human factor is involved, both: and from the control tower of the passage, and from the side of cabine crew. Something happened in the cabine.

The injuries suffered are very serious and serious measures should be taken by all airlines. Wearing seat belts should be made mandatory during flight. Food trolleys should be banned from flying. Passengers can pick up food packets before or after their flight. The risk to flight attendants is high. Children and infants should be provided with isofix child seats. Flights through the ITCZ should be resricted to safer times - afternoon flying in a convective atmosphere in the vicinity of jet streams led to this particular accident. Flights should be shorter with stops for meals on the ground and toilet breaks. We had that in the 60s and there were fewer deep veined thrombosis cases. Ofcourse we also had Ilyushin 18s clomping from Cairo to Kano, after which the world went up and down for days. Planes are more comfortable these days till some bean counter with no knees sticks in a few extra rows of seats. Safety first, money second. Mandatory seat belts and food packet self service will mitigate the risks of being being injured in a turbulent situation. Perhaps, securing the overhead bins better may also help.

No food/drink trolleys in a 13.5 hour London to Singapore flight? Mandatory stops with meals for long flights so that a Singapore to New York flight takes 2 days and costs twice as much. Imagine if you to travel urgently 🤣. Good jokes, but if you're so paranoid and concerned about safety, don't ever leave your house again because you have a way higher chance of dying or getting injured in a car, bus, or train than in a plane.
@anandagoswami7373
@anandagoswami7373 Месяц назад
@@PragueImport Let's not get too extreme. Flying has changed a lot since the days of getting a transit card at every stop. Planes are bigger and flights are longer. I did a lot of my flying on Comet 4s, which didn't have a great pedigree. But there was more room, the meals were just great and there were many stops between Calcutta and Rome. With the advent of larger, longer range jets, a bit of thought is required to mitigate risks. I do not know if pilots can actually see if they are flying into a jet stream where air speed falls below stall speed, so the nose pitches up and the plane falls from the sky till Bernoulli puts it up again. Just one scenario and there are plenty. So thought can be given to safeguarding passengers without putting them in space suits to collect poo and pee, or in diapers. Cars didn't have seat belts till the days of clunk click every trip. Times have changed and thinking helps keep up with the times. There are other alternatives.

Yes, your car is not as safe as a modern airliner but you do wear seatbelts in your car, don't you? You do put your child in isofix child seats. We didn't have such things on our Mercedes 190C but we have them on ALL cars today. Cars travel at less than 60 mph and planes fly at 600 mph. What's wrong in trying to safeguard the millions of people who fly today? Cost? A skull fracture or spinal injury costs a lot more than twice as much for an airline ticket.
@Exachad
@Exachad Месяц назад
@@anandagoswami7373 People wear seatbelts in cars, but nobody wears seatbelts in buses or trains and both have fatality rates much lower than cars. Will you enforce seatbelts there too? Because planes have even lower fatality rates than both. Most people are not going to sacrifice convenience and money to safeguard against accidents that are already extremely rare when there's things that are far more likely to take their lives. Most people can't even stop themselves from gouging down on food even though heart disease is one of the biggest killers, so do you actually thing anyone is gonna agree to these terrible suggestions to avoid one of these freak accidents that almost never happen? If you still want your suggestions to be implemented, might I sarcastically suggest that planes also include parachutes because theoretically, they would slightly increase your chance of surviving a crash by some amount.

Dear SIA, my prayers and thoughts to those who were injured and dead. I am from Flores island, Indonesia. Realizing that more and more severe clear air turbulence due to climate change and unpredictable nature's behavior, COULD THE WHOLE CIVIL AVIATION INDUSTRY CHANGE THE RULE? ONE THAT I SUGGEST: DURING THE FLIGHT, BELT IS ALWAYS BUCKLED UP. THOSE WHO ARE NOT BUCKLED UP WILL BE WARNED THAT THE COMPANY WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE IF THEY GET HURT. Another thing, could Airbus and Boeing install a censor on the passenger belt so cabin crew can easily manage and warn the passengers who do not buckle up their belts. If the car industry can install it, so can Boeing and Airbus.

SIA SQ321 dealt with the unfortunate disaster of extreme turbulence is appropriate and proper. Such an unfortunate natural disaster event is unpredictable. Having done the... An Emergency Landing: The pilot made an emergency landing in Bangkok after extreme turbulence occurred over the Irrawaddy Basin. Providing Relief Flight: Singapore Airlines sent a relief flight to bring passengers and crew members back to Singapore. Important activation immediate Medical Assistance: SIA arranged for medical assistance for passengers and crew members who were injured during the turbulence. Untiring Support and Assistance: SIA provided support and assistance to passengers and crew members who were affected by the turbulence. Immediately offer Compensation: SIA offered monetary compensation to some passengers who were affected by the turbulence. It's worth noting that SIA has also apologised for the incident and has promised to take care of the passengers and crew members who were affected. In terms of dealing with natural disasters, airlines typically have emergency procedures in place to respond to unexpected events such as turbulence. These procedures may include emergency landings, evacuation procedures, and provision of medical assistance. Airlines may also offer support and assistance to passengers and crew members who are affected by natural disasters.

It's so awesome the the rest of the passengers wearing their seatbelt that Turbulence was badly hit... Airline all around the world should implement the rules to all the passengers to wear their seatbelt on all the times unless they go to toilet... @user-yb1wt2mq8c Месяц назад
"Clear sky turbulence are not serious." Maybe go tell that to all those who got injured and the families of that person who died. Did you even watched the video? Go learn about clear air turbulence [CAT] before you comment more. At the moment we can't be 100% sure its's due to CAT but it's the most likely cause. 1 of the pre-flight briefing item IS looking through and talking about the weather forecast on route. Pilots will monitor the weather radar onboard as well. The radar works by reflecting signals off moisture in the clouds. If there are no moisture of too little of it, the radar won't show anything. CAT cannot be detected by moisture alone. At the moment there are no technology to detect CAT. It's also quite unpredictable. Last but not least, pilots are humans as well and would prefer an uneventful flight over flying into known turbulence since it would cause more work to be done and stress. Pilots wants to get home safe as well.
