I thought sqrt(8/3) was clear enough. What math principle requires you to go any further? Sometimes these math problems are just an exercise in "see how much more clever i am"

Dude, you can make equations look simple and solvable. Then you reveal that is not the case unless you know the applicable rules. Then you reveal the rules as you solve the problem. This works for me! You get two tubes of brylcreem for your 50's doo along with 2 plastic combs in case one breaks due to hairspray interference. You are awesome!

Great refresher! Early simplification made a huge difference; I multiplied the numerators and then the denominators giving 56/21 which is correct but not very useful. It simplifies to 8/3.

I got to the problem solution. I never really understood, why it is necessary to remove a square root out of the denominator, but thanks to your explanation it finally clicked, why this must be done! :)

I went a bit further, so, root of 4 * 2 / 3 is 2 V(2/3) ( I use V as root). Now 2/3 is 0.666 which I approx to 0.64 and the root of that is 0.8 so I go a little further and say 0.805 or something so the answer is 2.805 (I haven't used the calculator yet)

Decimal places in Physics and hand grenades is close enough. But forgetting to rationalize the irrational denominator makes it a complete fail in Math. Bummer. Bad habits have crept into my math over years of engineering.

But apparently, the numerator can contain an irrational number.
@ellentronicmistress4969
@ellentronicmistress4969 8 месяцев назад
@@TheSimCaptain Yes it's considered more acceptable. I think it's a throwback to a time before calculators when it was just easier to work with irrational numbers as numerators rather than denominators. Someone might correct me though.

In a GCSE exam in the UK you'd be expected to know how to express the answer as a fraction with surds. I'm not sure, but I assume that's the point here too?

That is how I’d punch it into a calculator, yeah. But technically sqrt(8/3) is in improper form as there’s a square root being applied to the denominator.

This equals radical (4 * 2/3). Pull the radical 4 out as 2, leaving 2 * radical (2/3). This is equal to 2 * (radical(2) / radical (3)). This equals (2 * radical (2)) / radical (3). Multiply top and bottom by radical (3) to "rationalize" the denominator gives you (2 * radical(2) * radical (3)) / 3. Then simplify this to (2 * radical (6)) / 3.
