Tom is, without question, one of the best woodworking explainers in the country. Unassuming, unpretentious, to-the-point, practical, plain speaking ....perfect in every way. Thanks! You personally cannot do enough of these videos.
Nice blocks! I designed something similar a while back, same end-result block shape but using a different method. Not having a bandsaw, my design was to rip a bunch of 2" strips on my table saw from some old 3/4" particle board shelving I had lying around, then cut them into an equal number of 10" and 12" lengths (or any 2 lengths where 1 is shorter than the other by the width of the pieces). Then assemble them in pairs, 1 long and 1 short, with glue and brad nails, flush along the length and aligning 1 end. This gives you several 1 1/2" thick 'arm' pieces with a 3/4" thick x 2" square half-lap shoulder in one end, with the overall piece being 1 1/2" x 2" x 12", which can then be assembled 2 'arms' at a time into the L-shaped blocks using a carpenter's square, glue and screws. So instead of cutting a half lap, my approach was to 'assemble' the half lap from 2 pieces of 3/4" thick stock. I think I got the idea from the 'Make Something' channel, when he assembled staggered strips into a 'cheating' finger joint (or someone else's similar video). Anyway, the uniform thickness of the particle board shelving made for some really accurate half laps, and after glue up the blocks are super strong at this joint.
You can use a table saw to cut the inner sides and then use a finish saw to complete the square. I have made several of these this way. What blade was on the table saw in the video?
Hi Tom. With all do respect, but in this video you are pushing them block in very dangerous way against them fence. Watch out for kickback. Further a very good video!
