Found this channel in the spring of this year. I have been hooked ever since. I look forward to every new video and replay all the older videos in between. It has been a wonderful 2019 just watching how you do all those videos and let many people into your life. I can't wait for what is in store for all us viewers in 2020. From all your viewers, Happy New Year.

Just gotta say Squatch - its not just the subject of the vids you do, it is the presenter. Its a very refreshing change to watch a true professional do what he clearly loves to do (most days - there are days we all wanna burn our project to the ground and move on, nothin wrong there!). You do a damn good job and deserve a hell of a lot more subs than ya have now. Here's hopin you hit 50k next year!

Used to be HUGE into the McCormick-Deering/International Harvester line with actual paperwork signed by Cyrus McCormick, been on Brooks McCormick home property, been in IH plants etc.. Glad to see younger generations enjoying the history of "Old Iron" be it Caterpillar, IH, Deere or even steam machinery. OLD IRON RULES!

It pulled 7 pitman cars .I was in my real early 40s my son and l ran a gp9 diesel locomotive .the first time my son was 10 years old. We fid this at the Portola train museum. That was 20 years ago. It cost 250 dollars an hour. After we were done they gave us a certificate showing the weight was 400 tons if I remember correctly. Awesome video

UP 4014 was out in Portland for the 2005 NRHS Convention. Afterward it headed east through the Columbia River Gorge. I, along with many others, chased it along I-84. When it came to Multnomah Falls it stopped for pictures. Everyone on the freeway just stopped to get a closer look and take pictures. I remember the one frustrated Oregon State Police trooper trying to keep clear the blocked freeway to no avail.

I have been on a steam locomotive while it was pulling pitman cars. I paid 100 dollars to ride in the cab. I felt the hart beat of the locomotive when pulling a hill . It was the skunk train stream locomotives 🚂 in Willits California 2 hours from my house in Santa rosa California. The whole ride was in the redwoods.

I will admit, I'm not a big fan of old iron just setting and looking pretty. But I do love to watch someone tear it down to it's bare bones, refreshing it and putting it back together into it's original state of its glory day. I've seen so many of these things in different stages of disrepair, and knowing the owner was wanting to do something with it but time, money, and availability of parts and tools, or someone with the experience to do the machining that they can't do their self. But I do love watching your channel and going with you to the different shows and swap meets. Then see the excitement in your eye because you found this prize or that part that you were looking for!! Keep up the great channel and letting us share your geart experiences as you comes across these prizes.....

what i like about the 4014 restoration is UP did not restore it just to do short run excursion trains. they put the 4014 back to work doing what it was built to do.. with the computerised pulse injection oil burner it is much more fuel efficient than when it was new on coal. . UP did the 844 which is half or a big boy now all they need do is restore the challenger to complete the set..

I have also always enjoyed and admired steam equipment especially trains. The amount of knowledge of both operators and repair and rework facilities to keep them running is simply stunning. The fact that rework facilities have been gone for the better part of 40-50 years makes the restoration of the UP Big Boy all the more incredible. It was really great to watch your commentary on the 4014 as a former worker of that very line. Oil pan for 5J1113 is looking sharp and appears to be about ready to go back on. I'm curious to see if you choose to use the older tower bypass oil filter and stay true to the 1938 machine, or go slightly more "modern" with the full flow filter off of 5J2115 SP. Hopefully Santa made a delivery of a few crates of NOS cosmoline covered Cat parts for you, like a full RD6 piston, liner, rings, and bearings for your RD6 with the LePlant Chote blade. Perhaps he even dropped off a brand new slide bar D8 with a cab for you to move the incoming snow with. If neither of those arrived this year, perhaps Santa is still working out the shipping from the North Pole. Cheers Squatch, wishing you a bountiful rock harvest in the spring of 2020.
@lukestrasser
@lukestrasser 4 года назад
@@squatch253 I am so glad to hear that, I was really hoping the early tall bypass filter would go back on. Between modern oil technology and the low annual hours 5J1113 will see I agree that the filter is going to be redundant. Good stuff Squatch. It was absolutely my pleasure to share some gifts from the far East. I'm already thinking about what I could send next year when I'm deployed again. Cheers!

That's what got me into Heavy equipment repair, the mass of 1,000's of pounds of iron breathing & consuming fuel. It is alive in that sence. The old D-8's & D-9 crawlers even the 1693 cat truck engines shook the shop building on the 1st fire up after rebuild. Then the nervous 1st start-ups of the 71 series Detroit's never knowing what to expect. Gotcha on power struck. That's what kept me in that line of work.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year... I can't speak for other viewers however there are numerous reasons I enjoy your channel immensely: 1. The accuracy of the technical and historical information you convey, 2. The amount of new information regarding machining, and engine rebuilding is educational as well as motivational, and 3. Your shop's cleanlines, organization and the special care with which you maintain your equipment is amazing. Your shop dispels that myth that engine and implement restoration has to be done in a greasy, dirty, unpleasant environment. Thank you for sharing all your skills and wisdom.

You are absolutely right about the sensory appeal of steam locomotives. They breathe like a living thing. You can even sense the change in the air pressure as the steam exhausts through the stack. My first encounter with an operating steam locomotive was Nickel Plate 765 in the New River Gorge, West Virginia in about 1985, and anyone-- or at least any gearhead-- knows in an instant how generations of boys all over the world dreamed of being locomotive engineers. (And some of us never grew upl) There are at least two railroads in the United States that put you through a steam locomotive operations class and let you drive a steam train (under close supervision): the Cumbres and Toltec in Colorado and the Northern Nevada Railroad. I would love to do one of those classes if my health ever permits.

Yeah buddy, you picked the correct #1 slot. He was rebuilt within a couple of miles where I got my start in communications. I have personally been on just about every rail mile those engines were built for (Cheyenne, WY to Ogden, UT). Beautiful country... country where mother nature rules the roost. Where man blasted away mountains just to achieve a passible grade only to have mother nature show what she can do with snow and 70 mph winds making snow pack almost as dense as sheer ice. If a guy makes it through that he then gets to face more snow pack and rapid melting in California and the subsequent landslides.

I know how you feel on burn out. I am tired of tearing down and inspecting at this point. I want to see some chassis reassembly on my end.... Soon enough we will be getting to that point. Great little plug for the Nowthen show! Was that Jon's D2? It is always good to see you there - hope for a reunion at the Spring Plow Day with ya if all works out. Albany is a GREAT show as well - a lot of BIG, RARE, and UNIQUE stuff there. Those Crossmotors are an awesome machine in themselves. The manifolds are very hard to find intact. I'd love to have one someday to go along with the 1928 JD D... I wasn't able to make it this year, but loved your video of the show. Heard it was a mudfest! 4014 was a great thing to be a part of - I am fortunate enough to only live 2 blocks away from the line. Got my video on the NB trip... And was working in the yard during it's SB return. Gotta tell ya - that steam whistle in the distance is quite an eerie sound - almost as if the past is haunting you through the trees. You're right - the whistle is THE source of anything that could be labeled "HORSEPOWER, TORQUE, and GOOSEBUMPS". As far as most photographed - probably a toss up between that and the Case 150 at WMSTR this year. Usually the question at WMSTR is "Where are the bathrooms"?... This year, EVERYONE was asking "WHERE IS THE 150"? Great year, Squatch. Looking forward to another start on more wrenching. And thank you for not only all of your videos, but all of your help in many facets on my end. Truly appreciated.

Another great video! I started watching your videos back in late spring early summer and i check on the daily. I love all the old iron you show. This new junk today looks nice and performs good but its boring. I like the fight the old gear puts up.

Well, I enjoy watching your videos. As a kid I loved tearing down garden tractor engines, the car, pickup truck, water cooled VW Dasher and Rabbit engines and rebuilding them all. But I was a bricklayer not a mechanic! My Dad was raised in a time and place where they had to fix things not buy new things and it carried on to me and my next youngest brother. I helped my mother's Father (yep, Papaw Smith) keep his Farmall Cub running and replaced the clutch in it once (my Dad had done it many years before). I still fix things from, well I still try to fix things. Now, let's get that engine back together, that X tractor in a parade and move to the next project. Thanks, Greg.
