“They see themselves in each other”. That’s an amazingly deep point there that I had never noticed. All the characters who died are reflections of the people who survived them. The ideal versions

@@decristal48 I don’t think Ji-Yeong is an “ideal” version of Sae-Byeok. She sacrificed herself because she had nothing to live for, unlike Sae-Byeok, who was trying to get enough money to get her mum out of North Korea and get her brother out of care. How Ji-Yeong an “ideal” version of her? I think it’s the other way around with them 2. Ji-Yeong was willing to sacrifice herself because she saw Sae-Byeok as the “better” version of herself. Or what she could have been if she had a family worth fighting for.
@decristal48
@decristal48 2 года назад
@@Drummer4President I see this more like a theory, that each one of them admire each other, and that at some point they wanted to be more like them. Ji-Yeong probably wanted a reason to live like Sae-Byeok, and she maybe wanted to be more positive and trusting like Ji-Yeong. Ali maybe wanted to be as smart as Sangwoo, and maybe deep down he would have wanted to be more kind and honest like Ali, to make his mom *actually* proud of the good person he is. Gi-Hun probably wanted to be a better father as Il-Nam seemed to be with his child, and Il-Nam (at least here) let him live because he thought Gi-Hun deserved to live longer than him.

You had the privilege of having no idea what comes next, so it hits harder. But when everyone is telling you to prepare for THAT SPECIFIC EPISODE, youll mentally prepare and speculate and it’s not a natural way to experience the show. I realize this is the internet and the shows been out for months now, but still have some courtesy in comments, I saw so many of these soft spoilers on the episode 5 reaction. Please stop. This episode always makes me cry. So sad to see half our cast go. And to make it even more sad, Ali kept calling Sangwoo as “hyung,” which is the Korean honorific that a guy refers to a close older brother or friend. Ali and Sangwoo grew close enough and Sangwoo took advantage of Ali’s trust. And when Ali pours the rocks out of the bag, he doesn’t believe it and pours out more the second time, hoping that Sangwoo, perhaps the first Korean person to ever treat him with kindness, didn’t betray him. He had so much faith and trust in Sangwoo and it led to his death. Ironically, only Deoksu, the thug, played the game fairly and won. Sure, he changed the game but the soldier allowed it. Both Gihun and Sangwoo unfairly manipulated Ilnam and Ali and Saebyeok only won due to Jiyeong’s self-sacrifice. It’s fascinating to see how everyone acted in this situation. I find it interesting how we understand Gihun yet we criticize Sangwoo when they both exploited their partners. Sure, Ilnam knew all along, but Gihun didn’t. Gihun was willing to let the old man who he kept protecting throughout the games die to survive. Gihun isn’t that different from Sangwoo here. They both prioritized self-preservation and survival over their morals. I know a lot of us feel like we’d act like Jiyeong and sacrifice ourselves to save someone else, but Sangwoo and Gihun are the most realistic people here. It’s easy for us viewers to say that we wouldn’t betray our partners and let them die if we were playing the game as we watch from the comfort of our homes, but it would be different in real life. People easily turn against each other, like if there’s a problem at work, school, or among your friends or family. Most people would pin the blame on someone else and assume that they’re faultless. Very few of us would be honorable and willing to die for a stranger we just met a few days ago, which just makes Jiyeong’s sacrifice all the more admirable and sad.
@crescendyr8438
@crescendyr8438 2 года назад
Sang-wo saved his own arse as any of of us would have done. As you say, he knew the guy for like 4 days. They were practically strangers. Nobody is going to just forfeit their life over to a stranger because that stranger made some lucky guesses in a game of marbles. Ji-Yeong was psychologically disturbed and had no survival instinct. When we first see her she isn't even trying to find a team. She's up away from everyone by herself waiting to die, leaving her life to chance. So you can't really say what she did was all that admirable. She just didn't care enough to go on. Daek-su was losing fair and square and then switched the game when he was losing. Both of them agreed to the game. The guard had no right to allow one contestant to get out of a game both parties agreed upon. The guard was in the wrong. But within the context of the new game, yes, Daek-su won fairly. Although if I was the other guy I'd point out that Daek-su did not get the marble in the pit therefore going by the rules verbatim he didn't win. There was a lot of 'rules idiocy' in the next game too, which made no sense given the stakes, but now I'm going off into a different subject. Anyway, If any of them were playing "unfairly" they would have been called out. All of them played fair games and won fairly.

I think because to do what sang woo did, it takes craft and manipulation. Most people aren’t like that. Doing what Gihun did takes no planning or skill, it’s literally just being handed to you on a silver platter. Also gihun showed emotion before he thought he was gonna win and he felt so hurt afterwards as we see in the next episode. Gihun was the only person to treat him with respect and didn’t want to leave him behind right before that, so you’re conveniently forgetting all the things he did before for il nam.

@@twalker2009 Yes, but Sang-Woo being a practical thinker doesn't mean he didn't care. I think it's easier to look at him in that light because he's intelligent and logical as opposed to most other characters in the show. It's interesting to me how Sae-byeok was just as selfish and practical thoughout most of the show, yet people tend to praise her for it and hate him for it. I just think it's dishonest as he's clearly just trying to fix his mistakes that he made with his mother. Everyone in there is trying to fix something, and no one is absolved of blame in the show, yet for some reason Sang-Woo recieves the blunt of the hate.

I completely agree. I don't believe either of them are bad people, but they both made mistakes with their mothers, are both gambling adicts, and both fighting to try and make up for the mistakes they made. We've already been shown he doesn't care about his own life, so who else would he be fighting for? His mother. She's the only one he's fighting for and I think people tend to overlook that detail.

The confusion abt the cop and his brother: He DID find his brother’s name in the files. He discovered that he was the winner of the 2015 games. What he COULDNT find was the specific file on his brother. After seeing his brother’s name in the book of winners, the cop goes to the 2015 archives (that houses all of the players of that year). When looking through it, the page would have his brother’s information was NOT there. Can’t remember the exact numbers but essentially it went 32, 33, 34, SKIPS 35, and straight to 36. That’s what the comments were trying to explain last time. Hope this helps.

I disagree. He's practical. He shows less emotion, but he's trying to make up for his mistakes like everyone else in there. Just because he doesn't show as much emotion doesn't mean he doesn't feel it. He's not only fighting for himself, but his mother as well. It's easier to look at him in a negative light, but he really just wants to help his mom. That's what people lose track of. If it were you, would you prioritize your mother's wellbeing or a stranger you met 4 days ago? Be hoenst. He clearly didn't enjoy manipulating Ali, but it was Ali or his mother in his eyes. We've already been shown he doesn't care about his own life, so who else would he be fighting for?

I agree that Sang-woo and Gi-hun essentially did the same thing to their partners, but with Gi-hun at least, you can tell that he feels bad about taking advantage of the old man. His expression says it all, it's tearing him up inside to do this. And while we may not want to admit it, in that scenario, a lot of us would probably do the same thing. Sang-woo doesn't feel that bad about taking advantage of Ali. He's doing whatever it takes to survive and it doesn't matter to him who gets hurt along the way. Unpopular opinion here, but Sang-woo is my favorite character. I wish he hadn't betrayed Ali, but I understand why he does the things he does. Is he a good guy? Of course not, but I can see why he's such a bad guy. What drives him to deceive and manipulate others. I always tend to like the villains though, lol. Great reaction ladies, looking forward to the next one!

I mean I don't even think he's a piece of shit. It's just how you play the game. If it isn't explicitly banned in the rules, it's still within the rules. There was nothing unfair that happened here. And he was clearly bothered by Ali's death. He just doesn't show it as strongly. He holds it in with this "I did what I had to" face. With stakes like this, everyone likes to think they would do the noble thing. But as you start losing the game, it eats at you rapidly. I was mostly impressed he was able to pull off what sounded like a feasible plan, threw in the contingency of holding a marble himself so Ali would think it's a contingency for his own safety, then made the swap during what was supposed to be a safety net. All during the panic of dying. I probably would have fallen for it myself, if it weren't for the fact that he came up with this "new" idea when he realized he was losing. But like, you think they didn't also kill people with relatively little remorse during tug-of-war? Everyone has blood on their hands.
@crescendyr8438
@crescendyr8438 2 года назад
Sang-woo was clearly effected. He's just practical and a realist. Whereas Gi-hun's head is in the clouds. What I found problematic was how quickly G-hun went to turn in the marbles once he thought he'd won. He could have at least let the clock run out. He was ready to have that old man put down immediately. I'd have let him walk around and relive his past until the time drew to a end. And I'd try to set it up where he didn't see the bullet coming.

Sang-woo was also the man who put his mom's house up as collateral when he knew he was engaging in illegal business practices. capitalism.. jfc... this show makes me think of people I know and people in general who have been screwed over by their "partners", whether spouses, business partners, friends, etc. The mix of greed and necessity brings out the worst in people.

@@crescendyr8438 Woah. There's absolutely no hint about him having a developmental disability. This episode shows how people exploit immigrants and refugees, something they show throughout the series with Ali and Sae-byeok. Either way, non-disabled people get scammed all the time...

@@gayhomosexuallll The fact that he fell for Sang-wo's ridiculous ploy kind of points to him being a little slow. Being an immigrant does not make you that -dum- _..."naive"._ The guy clearly isn't working on all cylinders. Let me make the bag more safe by wearing it around your neck? Counting teams? To what end? None of it even made sense. Ali was scripted in a way that makes him look very simple minded and innocent. Like a child.
@a.j.1819
@a.j.1819 2 года назад
@@crescendyr8438 Simple minded and innocent doesn't mean mentally handicapped. He was VERY naive and kind, to the point where it was unrealistic, but this is a show after all and he was portrayed as an exploited immigrant who got treated like shit in this foreign country by his boss. Sangwoo was probably the first and only person to show him kindness so it makes sense that he would trust him. He also knows Sangwoo is a university grad, so probably smarter than him and able to work out a game strategy. Put yourself in the characters shoes instead of interpreting things into the plot that weren't implied at all.

Your subtitles seem a bit weird. It's like a watered down version of the ones I have seen. It makes it sound like literally reading a script rather than more slang and emotional writing like the ones I seen. Great reaction though.

@@pencil6965 Not necessarily the same thing. Ji-yeong had nothing to live for and realized that Sae-byeok did. Sang-woo and Ali both have someone to live for. Sang-woo only has one thing to live for: his mother. Think about it. We were shown earlier in the show he didn't care about his own life, but he's come back to try and make up for the mistakes he made with his mother. I doesn't minimize Ji-yeong's sacrifice, but it feels a bit dishonest to me to compare it as similar situations.

This is why people gotta stop with their spoiling teaser shit. While saying "Yo this episode is going to fuck you up" isn't technically giving anything away, it's pretty easy to make the assumption that everyone's gonna die. So just like don't say anything because you're gonna ruin it for them
