Well see, I think it would have been better to keep the mask. Thing is, if the guy shot him, then he’d no longer have a hostage, thus guaranteeing his own death. He would have lost his bargaining chip.
@@Depths17I think that none pink soldier can see the others faces. Maybe because there could be some traitors who could be a spy, or something like that. So they still use a mask to protect themselves from the others. But we don't really know if all these pink soldiers are in there by themselves...or if they're forced. I think that we'll have more informations about them in the next season.

I'm a Holocaust historian and this is actually something I studied in college. In situations like this, people are more likely to just do whatever the authority figure tells them to do, even if they means death, instead of fight back. Humans are hard wired to follow instructions from figures of authority, that's how we developed complex societies. There are a bunch of accounts from Poland where 2-10 German guards rounded up 1000+ poles and marched them to execution sites with no resistance, people just follow instructions because it feels like it's the right thing to do

@@nasser314 I think culture is a big part aswell though. This show is set in Korea, where I've heard the social hierarchies are very strict with subordinates almost never questioning authority. I remember watching a programme on National Goegraphic about a plane operated by a Korean Airline which crashed. The black box recorded that the captain was making a clear mistake and was literally flying the plane straight into the ground. The copilot was well aware of this but even in this life-threatening event refused to question the authority of the captain. This isn't me speculating by the way, this is actually what they came out with in the investigation. On the other hand my father is Afghan and his little respect for any authority and would resents anyone who tells him what to do. He is so fiercely against authority that he will not budge even if to do so would be far more beneficial for him. When you think of Afghanistans long history of fighting foreign invasions, and looking at its highly decentralised, egalitarian society, it makes sense.
My theory: the guards are North Korean defectors, numb to violence. They are willing to participate and cooperate in violence to not get sent back, or the leaders pay the north Korean government for their participation. As you see, the guards live in jail cells, aren’t supposed to know each others identities; why would someone comply unless there is blackmail involved like deportation? They probably arent well compensated once games are over; they resort to black market organ selling (probably to make ends meet as illegal aliens in SK on top of minimum or no wage from SG).
I’m not sure if they are North Koreans per se, South Korea is portrayed as pretty bad enough in the show. My theory is that they are recruited like the players. Think about it: the have to follow simple but strict instructions and might die at any moment. Maybe people will leave, but since their lives aren’t any better out there they’ll return. I think they are so desensitized to it all that they don’t even care about living or dying anymore; all that matters is following orders ( notice how he unmasked himself when told to. They probably weren’t *told* not to, just what the consequences were, which they don’t care about) because it’s all they have in life. Sorry for the long read

The worst thing is that they say they do it so that people value life. Obviously that's a lie. They say it to hide their psychopathy and desire to do harm. In this serie the real villains are the old man and the leader of the reds. The reds are poor victims who were brainwashed to participate against their will.
My theory is that they are all just psychopaths who want cash, or sadists who like to see people suffer. Look at the kid's face, no reaction, he doesn't care whether he lives or dies. Completely disconnected.

As a Korean there's some mistranslations at the last. 어린애 doesn't always mean kid, but rather like young people of new generations, so he was pitying him for ending up there at such a young age.
