Sorry Kid but I can't agree with you on that one. Watch the motion of both the tail and the glow bug yarn in the underwater shots, chenille and dubbing really aren't movers (I think the motion of this pattern is what makes it so appealing). Also, you lose the egg effect of the bright orange dubbing beneath the light, translucent veil of glow bug yarn. Just my opinion of course.

If I had to fish with a dry in a one-fly it would probably be a size 22 Parachute Adams. Even if a fish hasn't risen in an hour, it is hard for them to resist at least a look at a wee bitty Adams.

You can never go wrong with an Adams. I enjoyed this new pattern. Though a bit unorthodox it is very creative nonetheless.

+Matt Troutman Let me ask you Matt. Would simply removing the tail make it that much more a fly? Then, you are effectively left with a bead head glo-bug. What if rather than a rubber tail, you attached similar segment of fluorescent yellow marabou (roughly the same effect as the rubber tail, but more natural)? I don't have the answer as to where something stops being a fly and starts being a lure and to be honest, I don't think anybody really does.

tightlinevideo I hope you don't think I'm trying to pull a "holier than thou" dry fly elitist thing do you? Because I'm not suggesting that at all. Just bear with me about the evolution of "flies" since I started to fly fish back in the "olden days". BTW are you the "Tight Lines" fly shop in Parsippany, NJ? If so one of your customers is my very best friend. I can remember when I bought my first Hardy LRH back in 1965 it cost me $25 and the extra spool cost a whopping $7.00. I don't remember any synthetic materials on flies. Even the tinsel was metal. I think one of the first synthetics I bought was "Fly-Rite Extra Fine Poly" dubbing. I still have most of the colors mainly because the stuff is junk. It is a bitch to apply to the thread and make a dubbing noodle. Back in the early 1980's is when the synthetics really started to come into the market place for fly tying. The first synthetic flies I was using were Glo-Bugs on the Salmon River in NYS. I even sheepishly admit to using Green Weenies for stocked trout in PA. However I would rather be found dead in my drift boat rather than have someone I know see Green Weenies in my fly box on the Delaware River. LOL. When I fish for steelhead I often don't make any pretense to even try to maintain any vestige of traditional fly fishing. I go totally over to the Dark Side with the infamous Trout Beads! So all I was doing was making a comment on how "flies" have evolved over the past five decades. I enjoyed the video and plain on tying the caddis larvae with the synthetic carpet tail.

I also didn't have you pegged as a dry fly elitist, although "95% of the time" does carry some weight. I am one of those guys that believes fly fishing needs to be pushed ahead not held back to an arbitrary date in time by a dictum that states "if the materials weren't used for tying flies at this time, they shall not be used henceforth!" (or words to that effect). Yes fly fishing has changed over time, even in the mere 35 years that I've been doing it, and I hope it continue to do so for many years to come. But Matt, Trout Beads? Really?

If there are fish in a run and a good fly fisher precedes me and fishes hard and catches two steelhead I can follow him and catch at least four more in no more time than he spent in the run. Besides even with an indicator I can get hung up and lose at least half a dozen flies a day, probably more. Beads cost about $.10 each and even though I tie all my own flies I hate spending my time to tie a nice nymph, or bugger, to lose it on the first cast. This year though I did start using flies again more often and especially an Emerald Shiner pattern I found on RU-vid. It is very effective and fish eat it dead drift or on a strip retrieve. tightlinevideo Just like most everything we use, or see, today has changed dramatically over time (or never even existed thirty years ago) fly fishing is probably going to continue to evolve. Initially I use glass rods and then when I could afford them I bought, over time, about a dozen cane rods. But when graphite emerged on the scene I started to buy, and build, those rods and sold the glass and most of the cane rods. Part of me enjoys the period of my early fly fishing in Montana fishing Armstrong when it was free, and being on the Madison in June when there were less than a dozen guys on the river and stoneflies were emerging and 20 fish days were common and 30 fish days not unheard of - on dries. No chasing an indicator all frigging day. It's all good though, my fifty year old Hardy LRH, Princess, and Featherweights, as well as my Lamson Litespeeds and other modern disc drag reels. I think I'm lucky to have fished the Delaware back in the day when hardly anyone even new it was a trout fishery and those that did were not letting on to anyone about it. I'm retired and still fish it three days during the week so I still get to fish areas with few guys and I still love to fly fish.

+Matthew Bess I do both, but it seems to work a bit better dead drifted. Seems to get a lot of takes at the very end of the drift right when it begins to rise in the water column.

My guess is you haven't seen any of the Terminator movies.

@@FattyMateo Chartreuse is a killer color, especially here in the south, but purple works pretty good too.

Yeah, McFly foam is cool stuff, but it does have some very different properties than standard glow bug or egg yarn. Whatever material you decide to put in the split thread needs to be very fine and you only want to use a small amount. Antron dubbing worked ok for me, but not as good as the yarn.

Squirry Wormy material will work just fine and is in many ways a more versatile material. It is available through Spirit River and others.

Despite some evidence to the contrary I do have some scruples when it comes to fly tying, few but some. Hence, no squirmy wormy anytime soon. But, me thinks a lot fly fishing folks out there would be shocked at just how many elite competitive anglers at the international level rely on SWs when the going gets tough. Just sayin.

tightlinevideo My only shock would be that it is used only when the going gets tough. LOL It's the first thing that gets tied on for me. Now, as far as claming some kind of scruples against the SW. You just basically just tied a jig and pig (old school bass fishing) for trout using something that looks like it came from a novelty sex shop. LOL if there wa a line you crossed it...no you leaped over it...buck naked ....and drunk.
