Squirrel cooker for cooking over the camp fire (you don't have to cook a squirrel)

While todays project is called a squirrel cooker, I have never seen anyone actually cooking a squirrel on one. Typically this small forged fork and ground stake are simply used for cooking small pieces of meat.
Thank you for watching. Black Bear Forge is a small one person shop located in Southern Colorado.

On the twenty-first day of Christmas the black bear made for me, a squirrel cooker, a key fob, a ball and cup toy, a decorative punch, meat scewers, a hot dog fork, jingle bels, a candy dish, a paper towel holder, a menorah, BBQ tongs, a stocking hanger, a Christmas tree ornament, a cabinet pull, a dinner bell, a steak flipper, a hose hanger, a bottle opener, a candle snuffer, a nice wreath hook and a beaitifull coat hook. Just tell me if this is getting annoying. only 8 days to go. gargoyle always makes me smile 😀!!

I want to get back into it on a small scale this year so, I will be making a dozen or two of these, some meat skewers (which I have found make wonderful kilt pins that double as last resort defensive pokers! LOL! And I have been making penannulars for years! Cheers!

I’m thinking a design modification might be to leave the ring open enough that the fork can be disengaged easily without having to pull it all the way through the ring to reduce bare hand exposure to the heat source.

It's fairly easy to use the horn of an anvil like yours to do the ring, however, those of us that can't afford a REAL anvil and are forced to use a Harbor Freight "anvil" are out of luck as the "horn" is not a horn, at all but, a screwy shaped end to an otherwise sort of usable anvil. SO, we have to use a form, a piece of pipe or whatever is handy and round and close to the right size for this operation. They work, but, I wish I could afford a REAL anvil!

For those reenactors or period people out there watching this; remember, copper and brasses were what all cookware and eatingware was made of until the last century. Which is good because having rusting cooking equipment isn't fun.
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge 4 года назад
That simply isn't true. There are huge numbers of forged iron cookware pieces from colonial America, forks, spatulas, spoons, ladles, skimmers, skillets and sheet iron pots. There are also plenty of surviving examples from medieval Europe as well as viking era that are in museums. If your cooking equipment is rusty, it just mean you aren't taking care of it. Treat it just like you would a modern cast iron skillet and it will last for centuries with no rust.
