Important knowledge. This week I was riding and found I couldn't access my 2 lowest climbing gears. Not being TOTALLY ignorant I tried doing a micro adjustment but no improvement. At the end of the ride I found that the chain coming off my pulley was actually touching the cassette teeth when I shifted to the climbing gears. Next day I consulted with my bike tech son-in-law (in house free service!) and learned about the B adjustment. A couple of turns and everything was humming like new. He checked it with that plastic guage gizmo, spot on. The AXS tech is brilliant, though it helps if you actually UNDERSTAND it.

This is 100% correct, most shifting problems originate from incorrect b-tension or a bent hanger. Although most people go to adjustment first.

As far as being able to adjust each cog. That was proposed to the SRAM AXS mobile forum a few years ago (SRAM website where you could ask for a new AXS function and people would vote if they wanted it). This particular request got shut down by a SRAM admin with the following answer: "If the derailleur hanger is non-damaged and the frame is designed to industry frame-fit specifications, trim position should not need to be tuned for individual cogs. That work is carefully completed by SRAM engineers as part of the cassette and rear derailleur design process." Kind of a crock of you ask me. I know my gears would benefit greatly if I could adjust each one individually.
@SingleTrackSurgeon

We may have had it in a shop profile beta profile, because at one point it was definitely an option. But I'm guessing they may have found an issue with it, and may fix that in a further release. I just hope they figure out away to make it reverse compatible for the older derailleurs.

I had my hopes up for a second while watching the video @ 7:38. All my SRAM AXS equipped bikes shift badly so much so I am fed up with it. Micro adjust per gear on a cassette would make EVERYTHING so much better. It is an extremely short sighted approach by SRAM. Such a pity. It seems their trust in their engineers is a little misplaced. 😮‍💨

So can you microshift in app each of the 12 cogs desperately or not? My 2023 eMTB has Sram XX1 Eagle AXS™, 12-Speed? SRAM videos are not particularly as clear as they could be look d be.

in 2024 there is still a note on SRAM AXS website mentioning:"Note: MicroAdjust affects position across all of the cogs. There is no independent adjustment for each cog." so unfortunately, the information in the video is incorrect. I tested this on my eMTB as well and it's imposiible to retain a value in the app per different cogs, each will have the last modified value

Unlike other instructional videos on the topic, this one is straight and to the point. :) Luckily I didn't throw away my B-adjustment jig. I have an AXS on my Specialized hardtail and an Eagle Transmission on my new Trek Top Fuel (this week). The Eagle-T has a little wonkiness in the 3rd cog that has it flirting with the 4th cog. So I'll see if I can micro adjust that back into tune.

@@SingleTrackSurgeon . I was able to tune out the minor 3rd gear glitch two days ago. It wanted to climb into 4th. I did one micro-adjustment on the stand and that cured it (in the stand, anyway). Once I got to a big climb on the trail, the 3rd gear glitch returned. I fired up the phone app and after three attempts to have a successful, long-enough Bluetooth connection, I finally was able to adjust 3rd gear one blip further to the inside. No further problems on a 2,000 foot day, yesterday, either.

This video doesn't mention having the rear suspension at the sag point (30% or whatever) when setting the B-gap. If you adjust it as shown, it will shift great on the stand and like crap when riding. Of course different rear geometry might affect this more or less, but don't believe anyone who says it doesn't matter if the bike is sagged when setting B-gap. Once you do that once, you can measure what it looks like with the bike on the stand (and the suspension fully extended). On mine, the difference at the test point is about 8mm!

When I am in my largest cog if I rotate the cranks backwards just a bit the chain will jump several cogs lower in the rear and the derailleur isn't moving. This is important that this does not happen because many times I am trying to clean technical and have to start again by backpedalling a bit which means I am always in the wrong gear requiring me to manually spin the cranks to the granny gear and get back on the bike. Should I try moving the cranks inward to compensate what I think is a chainline issue and is probably considered normal or is there another trick with AXS ? Yeti SB-140 11/52

Sometimes it's a search and destroy mission to find what is affecting shifting. Sometimes it's the spacing on the front chain ring too. Too far in or out can affect shifting quite a bit, especially at the top of the cassette in those larger rings.

On bikes that have a massive amount of chain growth you can remove the air from the shock, or have a rider sit on the bike while adjusting b tension.

It is more about the bike and how much chain growth it has. My bike has little to no chain growth so that isn't as necessary, but with links that elongate the wheelbase to the sag point you would always want to set at sag.

I think microadjusting each cog on bigger and smaller end of cassette individually on the app instead of adjusting the entire derailluer manually doing it with the shifter/controller is needed like you say is possible but I'm unable to achieve this on the app. Any tips on figuring out the app to microadjust differently for different gears/cogs? Thanks for the detailed explanation. I just took delivery of a Canyon Spectral CF 9 with AXS GX. As others have alluded, I cannot micro adjust individual cogs with app v2.0.27. My main problem is that when I put the chain on the largest gear and back pedal, I hear a rasping noise and the chain drops to second gear. What could be wrong? I haven't discussed this issue with the friendly Canyon support yet due to other priorities.
@SingleTrackSurgeon
@SingleTrackSurgeon Год назад
So there are a few things at play here. The 12 speed systems are not great at holding the largest cog if you back pedal, due to the chain being so tweaked to the side. Also if you have a chain guide, make sure it is clearing it completely, something I should have pointed out in the video. Lastly, make sure that your limit screw allows for the chain to properly seat on that largest gear and you have just a little bit of room there.
@peter572
@peter572 Год назад
@@SingleTrackSurgeon Thanks! There is no chain guide. I turned limit screw a quarter, but no change. Indeed, from a top view the chain looks quite tweaked to the side. Same outcome with chain on 2nd largest cog. I discussed the issue with 2 LBS, which they didn't even bother to look at the bike. I was told not to back pedal. I read an article in MTBR dot com, which mentioned incorrect installation of spacers in BB as a potential cause. My B-limit is perfect with bike on stand, I haven't checked it with sag yet.

@@SingleTrackSurgeon Canyon (online sales only) support offered a small refund for drivetrain adjustment at a local bike shop. However, the verdict from all LBS I visited, including a Specialized store, is that no adjustment can fix the problem. It is a permanent problem. I do not know how BB spacers look in a SRAM AXS drivetrain and if any spacers are present in my BB. I haven't done any steep technical climbing yet, so no need to backpedal on 1st/2nd gear. Canyon also offered to refund the AXS battery cage which was missing from my bicycle.

Shouldn't B-Tension be set when the rider is on the bike (under load)?
@SingleTrackSurgeon
@SingleTrackSurgeon 11 месяцев назад
The short answer is "yes". But many bikes have little or no chain growth which don't require for the b-tension to be set at sag because its not moving. But there are are some models that have significant chain growth where the b-tension MUST be set at sag. That is not the case for this make and model.

In most cases chain growth is so small that this doesn't matter and you can adjust in the stand. Some bikes that feature more drastic chain growth due to strange suspension kinematics, you would have to factor that in. The description from SRAM is saying that in the nicest way possible. 👍🏼

Like numerous others, I have problems accessing either the highest or lowest cog on the cassette. It seems to be one or t'other! The derailleur hanger is not bent, the limit screws are in the correct place and I have the correct spacer on my BB. The App no longer allows you to microadjust individual gears as you ascertained in the video. The screen on the App does exist but does not respond when pressed in any way. In my case the chain catches slightly on the second to smallest cog when I put the chain in my smallest cog. Neither the normal microadjustment, nor resetting the limit screws allows enough movement for the chain to shift completely clear of the second to last cog. The recent Firmware Update has reinstated the microadjustment of individual cogs on the App. However, it would seem that by adjusting one gear, all the other gears are affected. Much in the same way when you do it in the normal way with the controller. One old school hack that people may want to try is to set up their derailleur so that the problem is with the smallest cog. That way if you install a small washer or two between the rear derailleur and the derailleur hanger, the derailleur will be effectively moved out by a millimetre and will sit in the centre of the cog. It sure worked with mine! Thanks for the best video on YT regarding setting things up on AXS... 👏🏽

I too am really bummed that they removed that individual cog feature. The one thing we didn't go over in the video is chain length. Depending on the bike, I would guess that your chain may be too long if you cannot get into your largest cog and your b screw tension is set correctly. Give that a try, and let me know if that fixes the problem.

WRONG. you cannot individually trim each gear independently. Micro adjust effects all gears.

Unfortunately they took that ability to micro-adjust specific gears out of the app one week after filming this video... of course.

If it had the individually micro adjust it would be the perfect sistem

@SingleTrackSurgeon why would they do that? Sounds like a move to get you to buy the new one eh

It was in the app for MTB briefly, but in a recent update they removed it. Hopefully it comes back soon.

So this messed something entirely. I didn't see anywhere in the video where it says if it will not go into your highest gear. Nowhere in the app does it show to fix that. Limit screw is set to allow it to go down further and it will not shift up that far

If you are having additional issues like that, there might be another issue like chain length or a bent hanger.

The bike is solid and my Ebike conversion went great. ru-vid.comUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Very smooth ride at 30mph with no problems (135 miles ridden so far). The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.

That would all depend on the specific frame. I don't know the weight or lengths of every model of every brand. You can find those on the sram page to see what size chain to use.

The bicycle that starts moving in a gear that corresponds to the terrain can be called safe only. This is easy ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qprII2Y-dGA.html

Don't know which screw is the B tension screw

It is the highest screw on the back that pushes against the derailleur hanger.
