My shifter cable seems to pull itself slightly off the cable pulley on the larger cogs. Does this have to do with the cable tension being too high or maybe the pulley isn’t greased well enough to roll with the cable pull?
@6:09 you used a pick to remove the seal. I never remove seals this way. I use a pick like you do, but I carefully dig in from the outer race side of the seal. You're less likely to damage the delicate "flap" on the seal that spins on the inner race. Nice job on the video! As you can see by the comments, you helped a lot of people.
I had a problem with my NX derailleur and it was all due to the lack of lubrication on those 4 points you mention first. Saw this after I was done, but definitely wanna leave the comment here because I was thinking of changing the shifter, the cable, and almost the whole system due to a MINIMUM maintenance problem. I believe it has to do with the fact that when washing your bike that's the LAST place you think of keeping an eye on. Awesome video I'll be doing that TLC soon!
I finally performed this service today. Swapped out the pulleys from my GX AXS and enter the XX1 AXS ceramic pulleys. This video was super helpful, especially the part where you talk about that weird one off washer sans shoulder. Thank you!
I just realized i got scammed. SRAM XX1 pulley kit advertises as ceramic ball bearings. But it turns out there’s only ONE ceramic ball out of the total 14 ball bearings in the kit. The rest are steel balls. What???
@@GokkunGuru "The single hard ceramic ball keeps the steel raceway free from foreign particles in dusty and dirty environments. It smoothes the raceways which increases service life under extremely contaminated conditions. The single-ball hybrid bearing can also replace a conventional bearing without the need for remodelling."
I just bought my first 1x12 Sram GX group set with 10-50 cassette. I loved riding with him in my Scott Spark. Now I will get to know him better to do the maintenance as I already do with Shimano.
I also have the same set as you. Chain and rear cassette has been replaced but now the derailleur is giving trouble with very poor shifting up and down. Going to swop in a newer derailleur for a test run. If it doesn't help think I will replace with the XT derailleur. Seen many videos with this set up. Our mechanic agrees. He believes Shimano is tops over SRAM. Enjoy your Spark. Greetings from sunny South Africa.
Have no problem with NX derailleur , maybe it isn't the smoothest but it does the job and never gives me any problems. If it breaks I would probably change it for a GX.
Don't forget the loctite on the small bolts on the jockey wheels. I didn't use loctite and the upper wheel bolt came loose mid ride. Good thing I was able to find it on the trail or it would've been a long walk back to the car!
I have sram an Shimano I definetly recommend Shimano for silence, the clutch on Shimano is way stronger. The only thing is, that can influence your rear suspension to a certain degree
I'm blessed with not hearing chainslap, derailleur doesn't matter, on/off on deore doesn't matter, i'm blessed :-D I did hate wobbly NX jockeys after only 1 year of use though.
The GX Eagle derailleurs on our two bikes are both shot. Thinking of changing out for XT derailleurs after having watched others do so with great success.
My gx has held up to about 1300 miles of use pretty well. Jockey wheels gave out at about 1100 miles. Swapping to a xt shifter though was a good move for me, much better ergonomics for my preference.
I have been using Sram transmissions since the first 9-speed XO released in 2001 and in 2021 I am in the XX1 11-speed and never! I mean never! had any trouble whatsoever with chain, cassette, derailleur or shifter, people say it's bad material but I don't agree.
Good stuff as always, I havent serviced my GX in one year from I bought the bike. I will gladly do that soon before the good weather comes back. Thanks for the vid, take care
Just got a GX group with a NX cassette... And i can already agree the derailleur is amazing and the clutch is bulletproof...haha. And yeah, no need for protection, cuz the chain hardly move
My drivetrain maintenance frequency really depends on how much wet weather riding I do, but generally speaking, I have to do this at least a few times each season. This is especially important if you’re using wet chain lube. That stuff just gunks up everything. I basically need to degrease and clean the chain and entire chain path after every wet muddy ride. Sometimes the jockey wheels are so bad , you can’t even see the cogs and you have to pick the caked in sludge out with a knife.
Another quick tip if you are getting a clicking noise in your largest three cogs you installed you upper jockey wheel backwards like I did for a few months,
Hello and thank you for your guidance. My advice wear gloves to protect your hands. I am currently satisfied with the NX rear derailleur. I'm waiting for the GX AXS to be able to use the 52 cassettes and to be able to shift wirelessly.
Great video, thank you! The clutch on my GX works fine, no chain slap. But downshifting can be a little sloppy sometimes, especially when jumping 2-3 cogs. But maybe I just need to maintain it better and follow your video’s advice!
What would you recommend if B Gap and limit are all set but the rear mech is struggling to drop to smaller cogs? It seems like the parallelogram is not moving fully despite working oil into them. LBS is also struggling with setting it for smooth shifting.
I've worn out 3 type 3 clutches on SRAM GX Eagle derailleurs, just switched to shimano since at lease for shimano you can replace the clutch without replacing a whole derailleur.
On the clutch on the Sram if you turn it clock wise or counter clock wise it will freeze up and not push in. I found this out the expensive way after buying a new derailer when I thought my other clutch was broken
@@LoveMTB question; I have bought Sram GX shifter and I have Shimano XT breaks shifters, so I can't mount Sram shifter because they are not compatible..is there any kind of matchmaker or something like that? sorry for bad english
I do exactly same. Additionally I checke derailleur hanger and screw. 12 gear shifts like a diva... As long as everything goes smooth I leave it as is. But minimal cable rub or hitting a rock causes bad shifting... Ps: use gloves 😋
My friend, i may suggest you move to boiling chains in wax and parafin and stay away from oil. I did that 3 years ago and drivetrain lasts forever plus it is súperclean and súpercheap. Oz cycle has some tutorials. It is the best method by far.
I got an interesting one. I'm on Eagle GX. On a 2019 Specialized Enduro. The old x frame bikes. And my rear triangle's upper arm by the casstte has been damaged extensively by the chain. Chain slap on it is crazy. I've wrapped it since and that's helped. But I can't believe something that to occurs. Other wise this is my first time on Sram gearing and I am a fan. Way simpler to maintain from my perspective.
@@LoveMTB My bike is a 1x from the factory. Tempted to jump to a new bike once we move. Either way, love your videos. Thanks for all the knowledge that you share!
Clutch bulletproof? Am now on the third XX1 Eagle derailleur in two years and the clutches are gone before the pulley wheels. One of these the AXS that I used to replace one of the others. This is like $1000 and lasted for 6 months
Thanks for this video! I took the jockey wheels off my GX derailleur but forgot to take note of the washers and bolts 😕 You already clarified the washers in the video. But what bolt should go where? There’s a longer and shorter bolt. Thanks!
Nice video as always. I’ve got an AXS X01, no problems at all with the clutch, I’ve had to replace the clutch protector once, cheap replacement, cable derailleurs should have it also. I tend to clean and regrease the jockey wheel bearings often, either Shimano Premium or Motorex Bike Grease 2000 are great choices. I’d love to know the tightening torque for the bolt of the spring for the cage, I took it off some weeks ago to clean and regrease the internals, I torqued it to 4Nm which I think that is fine, but I forgot to put a mark on the bolt to know the factory torque spec 🤦🏻♂️ Regards!
Cleaning the jocky wheels makes them faster but the play in the bearings are going to result in compromised shifting performance I would suggest just getting new wheels for 30 dollars.
Not a bad suggestion! But remember that for something like SLX, Deore, NX, SX, you have a ton of play in the free jockeys, put the chain on and they work ok.
I'm using a NX 11speed on my emtb,, but next time it's weared out i want to change the boss to XD so I can upgrade to GX cassette and in time GX axs .. ANYWAYS NOT WHAT I WAS INTENDED TO SAY LOL I have very good experience using gun oil on my chains Ballistol it's called it's also prevent corrosion and protects leather rubber wood etc but after about 25 hour's of bicycling in dirty environment like the city it turns black so then just wipe off the oil on the sides of the chain with a face mask which is what I found those masks good for (nothing is so useless that it's not good for anything) just do it lightly you're not trying to remove it all just the dirty excessive layer and only on the sides so don't use a degreaser or anything and it's looks clear and clean again. I used a lot of lubes and oils im a bicycle deliveryman and loves mountain biking (Norway) here it's often a little bit of mountain biking included in my job mostly when taking Short cuts but this is a Mountainous country so.... I broken a lot of chains but I have never broken a chain again after splising it by pin locking method when using Ballistol gun oil on it... it's Also okay to get opened bike locks who gotten corrosive or washed by the rain so the lock oils are leaked out or etc.. it's better than WD-40 you need a lot less of it..but WD-40 is better As a degreaser..i haven't tried yet but I think gun oils like Ballistol is very good for the seals on damper forks and also for wiping the stanchions i Guess it will eliminate friction I'm actually sure about it... have any one else tried Ballistol or other similar gun oils for their bicycle?
@LoveMTB, could you do a review on the Shimano M5100 1x11 with 11-51T. I haven't seen many good reviews and I know you won't fail to deliver a good review.
Thanks for the video. I upgraded my SX Eagle to GX, happy with the upgrade. What about the clutch cover - with the torx head screw. Does it need to be checked for tightness, will I mess up my clutch if I remove it? Thanks KP
nice! I just broke my chain under load and my GX derailleur was then unclipped at the lower pivot(closest to the wheel) ... is that designed that way or it broke ?
Great video. It helped me a lot. Thank you! My question, is it possible to change SX pulleys to shimano XT M8100 series with 13t? In my place it is difficult to find Sram's replacement
Hi, Could you explain a little bit about loctite function, please? What's the difference between blue a red loctite? Which other brand can be used or found? Thanks
Red is permanent, stonger but can be hard to remove without heat Blue is used in all situations when you need temporary thread locker, other companies have it as BLUE also like Permatex 24200 Medium-Strength
I doubt if you need red anywhere on a bike. A little bit of blue goes a long way, scrub off any excess with your finger from the threads, you only want to leave some behind in the threads.
Sx mainly with gx shifter. I haven't done that but I'm constantly scraping crap off those jockey wheels. Had the chain off recently and the wheels are spinning nicely so far.
Awesome video, going to do this before the weekend. My sx gets stuck on the largest cog, even if the the cable is removed, as if the spring is too weak. Hopefully greasing the pivots will help. Any ideas if if doesn't solve it?
There is 3 3mm Allen bolts on the derailleur. Two of which are limit screws. One is a b tension screw that you need to manipulate outside of the factory position. Doing this can help it dropping from the big ring. Outside of that get a gx
Question can you push the bearings out of a new Upper Pulley? I have a GX 11speed and my bike shop only had a pair of x01 pulleys and the lower pulley was identical but the upper was different. I was curious if i could pop the ceramic bearing out of the new X01 pulley and put it inside my GX upper pulley? Thank you in advance for your time
Thanks for the video, I need to change the torsion spring cover where it says "type 3 roller bearing clutch", I can't find it anywhere on the web. Could you help me to find it on any website? Thank you very much in advance.
@@LoveMTB I have a sram gx eagle and the plastic cap where the roller type 3 goes, I have over threaded it, that's why I was asking where I can get it, thanks again.
about the Sram clutch... Inwould say they are weak. All the time when a friend from austria sends me clips from rides with his friends you can tell by the noise who is running Sram LoL
They aren't great, SRAM clutch isn't serviceable either, I service my xtr clutch once a year on my yearly bike service and have no issues, ever, plus you can tune the clutch tension on Shimano depending on your riding conditions, riding Austrian Alps compared to peaslake in England is a huge difference, believe me, I know 👍
@@threefeetpete2010 The clutch needs this special white grease right? My RD M5120 came with almost none of it and it creaks when it moves. I opened the clutch cover and took the clutch out and the noises are gone. I guess i have to get that grease right?
@@kaedeschulz5422 it is the special white stuff, muc-off is no good, neither is Shimano Dura ace grease, only the proper Shimano grease really does for it
The chain slap feels a bit bad on my nx eagle especially when riding stairs. The clutch on my previous Shimano drive train worked better for me even though the Shimano one was cheaper. On the nx the shifting performance feels better though
I've just bought a second hand nx derailleur and cassette etc , are the jockey wheels supposed to have a bit of wobble ? Also I can get it to select all gears up and down , but in 11 and 12 gears the derailleur starts to get noisy and jumps a little . What should I do ?
