Is this the type of content you prefer? Please let me know in the comments. Being a "RU-vidr" sure isn't easy, especially when it's not necessarily a full time gig. I have biases in regards to what I feel is valuable content, but that doesn't seem to resonate with most people based on views. That being the case, I need to make videos that people will watch and help drive subscribers. Drop a comment below and give me some ideas, I'll do my best to make them happen.
Is the "newish" Transmission worth it? Well, Rob and I break down a small "breakdown" I had while filming and give you our take on it's performance, durability, and serviceability. Check it out and let us know what you think. Have you tried Transmission? What are your thoughts on it? The short answer is yes, it's amazing, but that doesn't mean it's for everyone.
It's the latest technology and it's hard to argue against it's superiority, but I still have a bike with cable GX that I love and I think it works perfectly fine. Having Transmission might just be a matter of two factors: 1) do you have the disposable income to drop on it 2) are you buying a new bike and is it equipped with it.
Everyone has their opinion on drivetrains. Both Rob and I are die hard SRAM guys for multiple reasons. I just like the shifting feel better and I also feel like shifting a Shimano bike is a seismic event. I'll certainly ride a Shimano equipped bike and have a kick ass time, I don't really care that much. But if it's my bike and I'm choosing, I'm going SRAM.
The idea with this was to provide some insight on it's performance and serviceability. Drop any questions or comments below. Have a killer day!

cable and housing every 30 days? I've never had that experience ...ever. Why would that happen?

I thought the same thing but I think it depends on where you ride. I ride northern utah all the time but 4-5 times a year I'll go to the deserts of so. Utah. Southern Utah is a bike wrecker. Lots and lots of derailleur height boulders and rocks and the red sand gets into everything. I still think once a month is insane though

I agree with you. That is insane. I’ve had my XT drivetrain for 18 months with now issues. This sounds like BS.

@@ZRMTB Same here. I'm on year 5 on the OG cables running 2x11 spd XT. It's not skipped a beat yet. This is either some under-the-table paid ad for SRAM or SRAM just suck at doing mechanical groupsets. In any case, these guys need to run Shimano 12 spd. It shifts like a boss under load without electronics and at a bargain price compared to electronic shifting.

That rim was already broken before you landed. Just not completely broken. I suspect it took a good hit previous to that air. Great video. I plan on upgrading to Transmission soon. 100% agree you don't "need" it (like a dropper post, which IMO is mandatory for a MTB), but it's most certainly better than cables.
@richdrewtherideseries
@richdrewtherideseries 5 месяцев назад
I'm not going to rule that out. However, what you can't see in the video is that I hit it at just the right spot to catch a sharp portion of the rock and it's possible it was just the right frequency for that to happen. I agree with the "need" explanation. It's hard to argue that it's superior in many ways, just a matter of whether or not you want to, or can afford to, pull the trigger.

Shimano XT may not be as serviceable, but for less than the price of a Transmission cage you can buy a whole new Shimano XT derailleur. I love the way Sram shifts but it's way too pricey compared to Shimano.
@richdrewtherideseries
@richdrewtherideseries 5 месяцев назад
I think we need to dig a bit deeper on this. For example, the top line Shimano MTB cassette is WAY cheaper than the top line SRAM cassette, but it's also WAY CHEAPER in regards to build quality and durability. Upfront cost of a complete Shimano drivetrain is less, but they don't last anywhere near as long as SRAM(we've done quite a bit of testing on this). This isn't taking performance into account, which is much more opinion bases. We're making a video on this topic, stay tuned.

I'm no doctor, but I think LMNT would've cured you...kidding. That's crazy man! You all good now? I think his was a pretty straightforward scenario and some electrolytes were able to remedy it. We've been programmed as a society to bastardize sodium and I think that's had a negative outcome. Pre existing conditions aside, most of us bike riders would benefit from more sodium.

I really like the transmission, but I recently cracked/ bent my derailleur cage, the front section of the cage and had to replace the entire cage assembly and set me back $190 for the XX cage. If iit was just the jockey wheel or the rear partnof the cage, it would only set me back around $30 or $40 depending on what part needed to be replaced. But I personally think the transmission is worth the $$$.

This case (haha) is a little extreme, but do you think a lesser crash or issue where just the deraillier hanger would have been broken would still be easy and quick enough plus way cheaper to not make the change to t-type worth it?
@richdrewtherideseries
@richdrewtherideseries 5 месяцев назад
I definitely think it's a case by case scenario and I've had the scenario you describe above happen and a new hanger was a quick fix. To be completely honest, I needed to make a video for LMNT and we were filming on trail when that incident happened and I turned it into this at the last minute. To some extent, I'm shocked at how many views this has. However, it makes perfect sense. People want these somewhat "controversial" topics based around opinion so they can share their opinion on the matter. In the grand scheme of things, I'm happy this scenario only cost me $160 and the shipping cost of the wheel.

Transmission shifts amazing, its tough, the chain is tough, cassette is great. Shift speed comment is totally true but shifting under power is worth it, especially on an E-bike. Devils advocate, Shimano Linkglide XT shifts nearly as good on an E-bike, should last 2-3x normal XT or GX and its like $400 for the full group. I think its a far better budget option for e-MTB where the drivetrain is abused and is gonna get tons of miles on it.

I doubt that would happen with Spank or Light Bicycle rims. The entire wheel would explode before a failure, and that wasn't that hard of a hit. Noted, avoid the i9 rims. To be fair, I suspect the rim was already compromised. As for the shifting, I use Microshift and find this "transmission" discussion boring and irrelevant. For $169 I can replace the entire drive train. It is truly amazing what people will pay for bike parts.

I agree more is not always better, but it is if it's needed. I've also had bad luck with most doctors in regards to nutrition/electrolyte needs for athletes. Most aren't steeped in the matter and have very little to no education in this realm. Furthermore, sodium plays a very critical role in the body's processes and if you're sweating a decent amount, there is a chance you need more.

Spectacular clip of you wrecking the wheel! And yeah, if you had "regular" Eagle AXS there, you would 100% have destroyed the cage, as well as probably snapped the hanger, and probably dragged the derailleur in the gravel.
