Interesting fact: When Sri Lanka made the highest scores in all three formats, Jayasuriya had the highest score in that match. Tests: SL 952/6 (Jayasuriya made 340), ODIs: SL 443/9 (Jayasuriya made 157) and in T20s: SL 260/6 (Jayasuriya made 88)
Yep srilanka was at peak from 1996 although the record for odi was broken by England 2 times 444 and again highest 481 but this test score remains the highest in history of test cricket although England were the first to reach 900 in 1938.

Anyways Lanka could have batted more aggressively after crossing India's score and asked them to bat again once they got a lead of 250. Cricket has witnessed countless occasions where team bundles out in pressure of saving match on last day on batting paradise. But SL were more interested in records.
I watch this live on TV when i was in school And then one of classmates said to me in local news paper it is printed " if you want to create records then play against india" Jaisuriya was most devastating opener in his generation.
@@timetraveller9666 I don't think he was a better batsman than de Silva at all. Technically and in terms of the teams he played in, de Silva's impact is larger as an influence. Jayasuriya is a massive legend but he also has the benefit of playing till 2010 at the height of the TV and internet era. So he's better remembered by the younger population. de Silva retired in 2003 and his peak was from 91-00, so the people that watched him are now in their 30s and 40s.
@@timetraveller9666 he is not talking about legacy as cricketer. Arvinda was definitely far better than Jayasurya as far as only batting skills are concerned. But I doubt if one can claim that he was better than Sanga.
This Sri Lankan team changed the course of one day cricket. Due to them concept changed, power play came into existence. It was kaluwitharna and jaisuria whose target in every match to score 100-120+ runs in first 15 overs

Earlier 150 or even less than 140 was defendable in 1980s and early 1990s if you are playing against westindies. Westindies bowling was so fierce that the lowest target was also difficult to achieve.

Man at one time we had 9 solid test teams from mid 90's to early 2000's. Then decline began first in Zimbabwe after 2003 WC, windies starting going down hill and after IPL were a very weak test team. SL, Pakistan, SA have all declined as well from 2007-2008 not as bad as windies but still slowly. Now we really only have 4 quality test sides India, NZ, England and Australia. If we want long term health of test cricket. Pakistan, SA, Srilanka, Bangladesh, windies all need support for test cricket
that is one of the rarest footage i have seen, I saw it on Live TV as a kid. After Sri Lanka complied that score i thought they would score 1000 in an innings.
Greatest humiliation for the bowlers... Only good thing happened to them is that they managed to take out five players in last 3 hundred runs superb bowling... But only after 600 runs..

This can be very easily broken by the current Indian team against current Srilankan team ...but kohli will not do that....he will play for a win... Gill, Rohit, Dhawan, Virat, KL Rahul, Pujara, Pant, Sundar, ( Rahane), ....... All these people have the talent to score big.... Rohit can easily surpass his ODI score against Srilanka given a pitch like that... Really hope we get a chance soon to clean up that record!

Well for such carnage that the entire Lankan batting line up had put on for the Lanka Indian team had to wait for the year 2004 to produce a guy who could just play like they played & score triple centuries for a feast & that guy was none other than "The Great Virender Sehwag" & yes India definitely needed a Viru & will always do who made his sword like Bat do the talking & clubbing & entertaining.

Undoubtedly it is best period for srilankan cricket, jaya surya,attapattu,mahanama were in dream run for few years, dominated subcontinent more effectively than overseas , ofcourse against india they had upper hand in both odi and test formats,

This was that period when SL kept walloping India... 96 Semis and this Match were the cornerstones in my mind. I was barely 10. Sanath needs to apologise to me. Gving a child PTSD is not nice.
Remember Tendulka saying you need at least 1000 runs to beat sri Lanka in the last ODI before this and Sri Lankans proved that's even enough . What a time it was.
This test match specially srilankan batsman played their innings just for their records not for match and I personally don't like such type boring test matches , should have result oriented .
Fun fact: there was no space in the scoreboard for 4 digits scores(if 1000).. That's y the ground management asked the srilankan captain to declare the innings before scoring 1000😏😏😏
