(16 Aug 1994) Sri Lankans voted on Tuesday (16/8) in elections to decide the
future of the ruling party's 17-year reign, as armed police
enforced tight security to prevent violence. Polling was brisk in
the capital Colombo and in the provinces with voters forming long
queues outside heavily-guarded polling booths before they opened.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was among early voters.
