One thing I remember about the Sri Lankan players in this series was how technically correct their batting was. They batted very well right down to the tailenders from what I can remember. I watched this game, although I am Australian I was happy for them, that they got this win.
Aravinda De Silva....... the champion batsman who transformed Sri Lanka from Minnows to Cricket Champions of 96 World Cup and a super power of the game with assistance from Arjuna Ranatunga, Chaminda Vaas, Muththiah Muralithan, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Pramodaya Wickremasinghe, Gunaratne, Kumar Sangakarra, the two Tillekeratnes- Hasan & Dilshan, Marvan Attapattu, Upul Chandana & two Jayas- Sanath Jayasuriya &Mahela Jayawerdene.
People forget How great was Dulip mendis...he was Aravinda before Aravinda! But Aravinda hands down one of greatest batsmen of world cricket without an argument!!!
I still think Aravinda was the best batsman ever produce by sri lanka. i have seen him wearing a grill with his helmet only few occasion . He loves fast bowling and i think those days bowlers are more attacking modern days. I have not seen any one hooking like him in world cricket so far .... See the joy of their eyes.....i heard about this victory in radio ....
adrian ollivierre. They were pretty good with some good individual performances. Although SL team was good but needed to learn how to win matches. Once they got some experience especially the younger guys like deSilva & Ranatunga, they were on the up. In 1985-86 I think, SL toured Pak & played well. In the test series deSilva hit 14 Sixes against Imran. Their bowling was very good as well. Ramish/Ravi Ratnake, Denil & Lubroy were pretty good. I remember Ramish broken the jaws of the couple of WI batsmen in the mid 80s.
Individually almost the entire cricket team in the 80s was superior to there counterparts in today's team (save for a few like Madugalle or Karnain). But there was no system and a huge lack of experience also meant we were outperformed. And then some teams like the Windies were just way too good - they would beat every team in international cricket across all time.
@@HoratioFitzbastard I think it was part of the follow through of the shot, which most people would say is still part of the shot. So it should have been out, both then and now.
Aravinda awsome performer.... have to note this.... 1985 arjuna is a water boy.... aravinda s mom..... but aravinda neve led the cricket srilanka...... money talks..... :-p
Quite nostalgic.Aravinda was the best batsman Sri Lanka ever produced.I rate him above Sangakkara as he was more exiting to watch and played and won matches for Sri Lanka in an era when we were minos.what a team we had those days.Aravinda,Madugalle,Roy Dias,Rumesh,Karanain,Sudarshi Wettanuny. they were all brilliant cricketers and polished gentlemen.
Wow! This match reminds me our famous Win against Australia at Cardiff in 2005. Thanks to Ashraful for his wonderful 100 and Aftab's history making 6 to Gillespie.
I can't imagine this type of a victory when I was just 2 years.the time has been changed so fast...what a great moment and master class players...!!!!!
Just 3 years got the test status, see how they playing like real lions, never gives up, current team must take a rest and sitting all together and watch all past winning matches, they can learn how to play cricket.
This was Saturday 19th January 1985 in Melbourne. Here's the scorecard: www.espncricinfo.com/series/8531/scorecard/65380/australia-vs-sri-lanka-8th-match-benson-&-hedges-world-series-cup-1984-85
Just shows how shambolic one day cricket was back then. Two teams wearing the same colour, a guy walks on to his stumps and given not out, run outs not decided by TV replays, going at 4 an over for the first 15 described as going for it, dropped catches galore, completely mistimed shots trickling for 4 and Tony Greig is giving it "oh what a shot". How the game has changed.
Colour blind person can't recognised bcoz both teams have same colour jerseys. How many test playing cricket teams and how many colours in the world. Issue a single colour to a single team. 1992 WC jerseys are the best.
