Betel(bulath) leaves, puwak(betal nut) and chalk are added to it, and dried tobacco is added to make it more intoxicating. In many villages in Sri Lanka, people are chilling and working. Don't think on the sour taste in your mouth when you eat it. You just have to put it in your mouth and chew it. Try it bro. It's cool.

Chris, Like most addictive substances I don't think anyone enjoys their first taste of "bulath vita" , the betel leaf preparation. So no surprise that you found it revolting. Not all Sri lankans chew that stuff but many from the labouring classes do, as once they're addicted it gives them an extra boost of energy.
