I see a lot of guys not using any sort of hitch knot I personally use a hitch and a notch rope wrench and foot and knee assender I would just have a safety concern with no hitch but I see your system works well stay safe
My Halfline 2.0 Uses a Vergo belay device as an ascender with a 8mm eye to eye hitch cord tied in a knut hitch above the mechanical. As the Vergo ascends it tends the rope hit hitch beautifully. Descending is smooth as butter also
Joe, I am using a Tethrd phantom and the SRT kit fro Wespur. Last night I made my first attempt up the tree after reviewing your video. I notice you have an orange loop which changes the orientation of the caribiner 90 deg. Because I secured the caribiner to the GriGri and to my bridge it caused in the GriGri to become oriented side to side in instead of fore and aft as is yours. This makes the Grigri more awkward to work and impedes the mechanical advantage to the ascender. I would appreciate your thoughts on how best to correct my problem. I think a 2nd caribiner would work temporarily just so I can practice technique but that is not the long term solution. I suppose I could add a second bridge like you did with bee line if you think that is the best method. Also, I would be interested in strategies for quieting the SRT gear. The GriGri is a challenge because of its metal and its attachment to a caribiner. Thanks.
Joe I would like too see a video on how to hang your srt rope, because its only one rope, I don't get how that would be tied to a limb when we go into a hunt
Feels like you are holding your back up feels like your you are top heavy. So i used my recliner strap under my arm to hold my upper body that was the ticket going up and down feels so much more comfortable
In this video I was actually wearing a size 2 Aerohunter evolution saddle that a friend sent us with a rope bridge. I love that particular model but I seem uneasy because 2 reasons it was a little large on me and I didn't like the rope bridge that it came with and it made me actually kind of nervous the way it was tied in so I was cautious as I was feeling it out , I went to a size 1 evo with a Adjustable web bridge and I'm much more comfortable in that . However yes I agree the back band is great, wear it every hunt.
@@NYSaddleHunter Well because of you guys i bought the solitude 2.0 fells great here in the yard can't wait to get it in the woods. Recliner pulled up tight really made the difference for the SRT climbing. Good luck to both you guys this season and be safe out there. Oh ya had the Phantom last year and the mantis the year before but think this one is here to stay
Hey guys, I’m thinking of purchasing a Grigri or Safegaurd but leaning toward the Grigri because more versatile for climbing I think. It’s only rated from 8.5-11mm and of course the Samson predator rope I just purchased is 11.4mm. I may climb srt with it but some days when I 1 stick. I’ll rappel down down via the Grigri. Have you ever used the predator rope on the Grigri? I know it’s a tiny bit out of its size area but I think it should work, I hope
Do you use a left hand ascender in your left hand? That may sound like a silly question but Dave from Wesspur said that you use it the opposite way, so I am confused.
I would like to try saddle hunting. A few questions: should we also connect the hand ascender to the bridge as a redundancy to grigri? And when we reach the platform, should we stay on the climbing line, or move to tether, or both? Thanks
I noticed that your arm reaching up to your hand ascender is fully extended as you try to stand in your foot loop. I have found that fully extending my arm in that way makes it harder for me to raise myself. If I reduce that reach by about half of that, my climb is much easier, and it does not reduce the gain of height per lift by enough to matter. In fact, making small steps up the rope is far easier than trying to gain a lot of height with each step.
So, you guys use Predator climbing rope. Looking at Wes Spur’s lineup there are many different options. Maybe you could expound on rope choice in an upcoming video? Softer, stiffer, medium, 12 strand, 16 strand, 24 strand, slicker vs coarse exterior, polyester core, nylon core, color choices, acceptable load rating, etc. As a novice, considering available options & prices, I would like to make an informed decision.
In your video "20' Up The Easy Way" you use a different technique. It looks like you used both hands to grab the ascender instead of using one hand on the rope as you did in this video. I am curious why and which method you prefer. Thanks!
Joe can i buy the srt hole kit at wespur its seems confusing with all the gear you need, it looks simple though, once you learn all parts and technique
Eric yes there's a SRT/SRS saddle hunter kit available from Wesspur with everything we use in it . If you use NYSH2 promo code you will get 10% discount. Here is the link. www.wesspur.com/climbing-kits/srs-saddle-hunting-kit.html
Hey guys! Quick question. How do you feel about squirrel hunting from a tree? I'm new to hunting but climb trees DRT for work and for fun! Love the videos they are awesome, and I love your using a practice that is safe to trees!
We have tons of squirrels here where I live and I want to thin them out . I was actually thinking its probably good practice to set up as you would deer hunting and hunt squirrels with my bow . So why not ?
Hey Joe what is the red strap you are connected to in this video? I’ve seen some videos of people using a regular bridge but your setup looks shorter and easier. @NY Saddle Hunter
Looks like another harness like a rock climbing harness under his saddle... if you zoom in on the saddle he’s not even using the bridge loops they are hanging open. Right when repels down to the ground and touches there is a good shot to screen capture
I notice you are using the right hand version of the CT Quick Roll Ascender but you are using it with your left hand. I am going to try SRT for the first time and want to use my left hand like you do. Should I purchase the left handed version (ref no 2D663SJ) that is now available or should I purchase the right handed version like you did?
@@NYSaddleHunter good cause that's the one I ordered, I have some older SRT equipment , cmi ascender, grigri, and foot loop. Looking forward to climbing with this teck.
It looks like your wearing 2 saddles? One is a Tethered and the other looks like a rock climbing saddle. Can you do a video of your saddle setup for SRT climbing. I have a Tethrd phantom, but it has no belay center point attachment point. Thanks
Yes I was wearing my RCH inside my Tethrd mantis to climb then I'd use the Tethrd amsteel bridge to hunt from. I'm currently using the Aerohunter evolution saddle heres a video how I installed a factory short bridge. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FSiQdsyw5rk.html
@@NYSaddleHunter thanks for the video. With the new design of the phantom saddle the bridge is adjustable and double the original size from previous models. I’m looking forward to adding the SRT climbing method to my hunting methods.
@@scalesandtailsoutdoors Good luck with it. When you're shopping for SRT check out the saddle hunter kit on Wesspur tree equipment site and if you use NYSH2 promo code you'll get a 10% discount
@@NYSaddleHunter order placed and can't wait till it arrives and to start practicing. I now have to go and set para presets. let the fun begin. Thanks again.
@@timahern7214 I tend to like to have the gri-gri handle towards me I grab the brake release with my left hand pull towards my left and hold the tag end of the rope with my right hand
That click was my gri-gri. The gri-gri has two settings and in this video I didn't have the gri-gri in the optimum position. In the top rope position it eliminates that click. I was new to SRT climbing at this video and learned this as I practiced and explored it more
2 ways. Either tie paracord to the loop end of the girth hitch / canopy hitch. Or you could tie an alpine butterfly midline with a longer line . One end you can climb on the other end will pull it out when your down .
@@NYSaddleHunter I tie my bitter end (end without the loop or eye) to one end the paracord, then pass the other end of the paracord through the loop and tie it to the base of the eye splice. As you pull down on the paracord, the bitter end goes up and over the limb, then through the loop cinching to the limb and bringing the bitter end back to you. When you want to get the rope down reverse the direction (pull on the paracord tied to the base of the eye splice. This is assuming you have a preset. This only requires half the amount of line but I would recommend 40' as a minimum. That is only half the weight. If I were going to hunt I would pull the rope up the tree and put it in my pack once I was set up in the tree. This is a great Chanel, thanks for the time and info putting it together.
@@danielg2253 That is how I envisioned it. When u put a tether 2 a tree u r putting the carabiner end through your loop & cinching it down. The whole system relies around a starter line which is paracord. Paracord needs 2 attach 2 your throw ball line. I guess u just need an arm & hand/eye coordination 2 get the whole process started.
@@josephtreadlightly5686 I set the paracord after I have used a throwball which is tied to a good throwball line, I personally like Dynaglide very light but strong, minimal stretch. Paracord to heavy and stretchy I do not think you will have good results using parcord with a throwball. Also, when setting a preset and not hunting (I personally always use presets), I do what Joe does and use a base anchor, then climb and set my preset exactly where I want it and girth the trunk. This allows minimal manipulation of throwball and line. Saves a lot of time quieter (even though I am setting out of season) and less chance you trap a throw ball in the tree. I almost always set with a partner and we each carry a throwball because it is not a matter of if you get one stuck, but when you get one stuck you can throw the second one and then climb up retieve the stuck ball and set your paracord.
@@Shootemfulloholes Maybe not for a hang and hunt . We scout yr round leaving preset parachord loops in areas of interest so we can be in before light .
@@NYSaddleHunter Ahhh i see ok now thats making a ton more sense. Well thats pretty crafty, i use 3 sticks with aiders and it is a bit of a mission at night making it easier for a morning hunt is what I'm looking at. Thanks for sharing and responding.
@@Shootemfulloholes 👍. Look for a deal in the future on 1k ft rolls of Parachord. Joe and I go through about 4-5 rolls a yr. setting up pre sets. I’m sure a lot of you do as well. Looking into getting our subscribers a discount on all the gear we use.
If you dont like it , do what yoo like. However Ive killed 2 deer in the last 2 weeks one climbing SRT the other DRT . My climbing gear was under 5 pounds. Ive been hunting deer out of trees for over 40 years and Ive found these methods Ive never felt safer climbing, its a more efficent climb than any other mobile set up IMO and its pretty fun. Nothing easier than repelling out at the end of the day. We really love it. However if its not for you , thats ok, more than one way to skin a buck. Do what you like. Climb safe and best of luck !
