LOVE THIS CHANNEL!

Very cool. The switch on my Mini is starting to go too. I tried desoldering the lugs from the daughter board and had the hardest time. Didn’t even think about using one of the pedalPCB ones I had sitting around for future builds 🤦‍♂️ rookie mistake. Thanks for posting this. One of my favorite channels.

Bad batches of stomps happen. Lord knows I've seen it. My biggest problems are carling dpdt stomps.

Awesome repair!!! Love to see this and the thought process behind it, I’ve been repairing pedals for years but always like to see how others do it and gain new insight

Thanks for bringing my pedals back to life Joe! Lots of great info in this video.

Just because the timelapsed bit loses this detail: Wait for switches to have completely cooled down from soldering, before actuating them to test. Heated plastic and glue is not going to be happy with this! This is just a note for viewers.

I recently killed a switch that way. I clicked it and it started seizing.

That 9V enclosure looks really handy. Did you make that or is it available somewhere? Thanks.

Nice to watch! I have the opposite problem. The sound only goes through when my timmy overdrive pedal is active. Saw you had a teardown of the pedal, but do you have any tips before I just try to switch the switch? :)
@graybenchelec

that's even more likely the switch, because there's no circuitry between the input and output jack to be defective.

I think reliability concerns of latching switches is why some manufacturers have switched to momentary switches and relays. I guess the former are more reliant on sprung contacts than the latter and are therefore more wear sensitive. Any idea if worn 3PDT can be replaced with a relay arrangement?
@graybenchelec
@graybenchelec 7 месяцев назад
Absolutely, SPST momentary switches are more reliable than 3PDT. There are drop in projects to replace a 3PDT with relay bypass, here is a super tiny SMD one from MAS Effects: mas-effects.com/relay-bypass/

The only thing to keep in my with relays is the additional current draw. However, since almost no one is powering their pedals using batteries anymore, that shouldn't be a big deal.

I'm intrigued as to why there are daughter boards for the footswitch on these pedals (especially the second one with two footswitches, when only one switch has a daughter board) - Is this to make replacements easier? It seems like it's adding extra cost without much benefit - especially as you're replacing the daughter boards alongside the footswitches

Convenient wiring while keeping components off the hardware in case repairs/desoldering is needed, there are many different types of daughter boards, some with extra features (built in LED traces, buffers & switching components on-board, etc.) or socketed ribbon cables for easy replacement - there are many reasons; most related to making the initial building/repair/signal routing easier & more compact.

But mostly you're overestimating the cost of these daughterboards, especially as they're bought bulk and often panelized WITH the main PCB itself. A daughterboard costs _literal cents._ It brobably IS cheaper than physical wire, and as I stated before, more compact/manageable.

Just what I needed to see, thanks! I was going to replace a switch, but use the existing daughter board. Any problems/concerns with that?

Desoldering 3PDTs can be difficult, that's a lot of heat for a little PCB. I've never had good luck with that, so I replace the PCB as well.

I've had success replacing the guts of the footswitch when the switch is solder directly to the main PCB for example.

@@BlakeC27 Interesting, I hadn't considered that! I wonder if those little metal arms from the plate would still be strong enough after a second bending-out? Probably be fine I suppose...
@BlakeC27

@@graybenchelec I've only done it a couple of times and haven't had any issues. You just need to bend one side.

Hey ! I have a mini I love that is thoroughly trashed. Is there a way I can send it to you for repair? It means a lot to me. Brian built it for me at his place in 2018 and I dearly miss it. I had a "friend" attempt to repair it and it is in desperate need of a skilled technician. I'm going to email you.

Hey. Appreciate the content as always. I have the same issue with an Electro Harmonix DMM with Hazarai, so I do not think i can just replace the daughter board. Do you (or any of the fine folks in this comment section) have any recommendations for desoldering a daughterboard?
@Loscha
@Loscha 7 месяцев назад
It'll be lead free solder on it. I'd add some fresh leaded solder before using a quality desoldering tool (like a Goot), or good quality fresh braid.

Controversial opinion. This is why I dislike daughter boards with a few exceptions.

I agree. I hate them but if the pedal is connected to a looper routing system, it probably doesn’t matter if it’s always on

Dude, totally agree. I’ve had bad Luck with them and therefore avoid if possible. But I do understand the convenience/aesthetic aspect.
