This benchmark looks at console (Xbox One X) load time performance with a hard drive vs. a solid-state drive. Part of this testing answers whether it's worth it to use an SSD as a game drive for a modern console. The benchmarks include long load time testing of Final Fantasy XV (FFXV), Assassin's Creed Origins, Destiny 2, and more.

According to the "Scorpio Engine" HOTCHIPS Symposium presentation XOX uses a SATA2 interface as it uses the identical Southbridge chip used in the Xbox One S (released a year earlier). There are diagrams of the Southbridge of the XOX on Anandtech and Tomshardware. Similarly a google image search for HOTCHIPS+Scorpio+southbridge will bring up the diagram.
@2drealms196
@2drealms196 6 лет назад
Given that XOX internally offers SATA2, the USB 3.0 interface should in theory be less of a bottleneck for SSDs than the internal SATA2 interface.

People think this is a joke, but it is an actual problem. There are many games that have mission briefing as a loading screen, and now those load so fast you can't read it. I had to install some games on my slow USB stick to slow them down. But often even that doesn't help, because modern processors are also very fast, so they can process the loaded data much faster. Sometimes you have no choice, but to quickly take a screenshot and read it from there.

I have both an Xbox one x and a gaming pc with a i7 6700k and gtx 1060 and I have no preference, all depends on my mood if you want something that you can just sit down grab your controller relax and play some games with some friends then an Xbox is for you but if you’re really serious about every single frame and want to sit at a desk all the time with a keyboard and mouse granted a mouse is much more accurate than a controller but for me the comfort and ease of access is what matters to me I’d rather just turn on my Xbox and start playing a game instead of waiting for my pc to load up and then go through the many different game stores ex. Steam, origin, Microsoft store then waiting for the game to load

Honestly, more like the year 2000. 7200RPM drives were about the only platter drives that made any sense once they were released. It's ridiculous that Apple, for example, is STILL using 5400RPM drives in all their $2000+ base models. If you don't pay out the nose to upgrade them when buying, then you get a $2000-$4000 potato!

Oh sorry, i mean Microsoft Xbox Series One.......which is a bit of a conflict as it is not the first one in the Xbox series, which is a bit confusing to me, even though this is running a custom AMD CPU/GPU combo i think that the people at Microsoft have been taking naming lessons from Intel (don't get me wrong, i love Intel CPU's but when you start calling your processors Core i9-10900 XE or some other tongue twisting name then you end up confusing more people then helping them, especially considering that the Core i9-9900KS Unlocked Special Edition is a generation behind and its faster than the i9-10900 XE) so seriously Microsoft....they should have stuck to their guns and kept the Project Scarlet name but it is pretty obvious that the corporate VIPs decided to play marketing name games with this product.....who wants to see if the name changes again before launch???

Here is the thing, so I work in IT at a small town bank, there is me and my boss in my department lol, but anyway, we have SSDs in everything here, and yes it is impressive how fast they are and how quickly they boot up, BUT SSDs literally have a ticking clock until the die and sometimes it does not take very long, especially if you don't configure your OS right. I have seen good SSDs go down within 2 years or less because of Windows for example. Here is the thing, unless you are a super impatient person and literally every second of waiting is an unbearable pain for you, there is not a good reason to buy an expensive SSD over a reliable hard drive, I don't even own an SSD at home, I have gamed from hard drives my whole life and never had an issue. A good mechanical drive can outlast a SSD if taken care of and is so much cheaper if you have a large game library like me, I literally have a 6TB drive with 5TB dedicated to my games lol. My computer boots in less than a minute and still takes less than a minute to launch anything.
@BeesonsCars

I feel like for average use SSDs are fine reliability wise for most. I have had an SSD in my laptop for the past 4 years or so and have had no issues with it but I absolutely love the speed. It’s a 512gb proprietary unit (MacBook Pro) but it has really made the computer feel fast. I currently have an Xbox one X and do wish it was easier to upgrade the HDD to an SSD because loading times for Forza Horizon 4 are absolutely atrocious with the HDD. About two minutes or more to launch the game and get to your car. It’s pretty much the only device I use now that still has an HDD.

I see many benchmark SSD vs the normal harddrive on Xbox One X but with external, you are limiting your bandwidth through USB 3.0. Plugging it in internally would give it a significant upgrade. Not only performance but in terms of heat and noise levels as well.

so the XB1X internal isn't actually 7200 RPM, or even a hybrid for that matter? way to go Microsoft, the drive in my XB1E is actually a better drive than the one featured in the XB1X that succeeded it... it kinda makes me wonder if console to console drive transfer would be a direct swap without having to clone though lol as much as I dislike sony's somewhat spiteful way of doing things (taking far too long to implement external drive usage for games, and even restricting it to move only as opposed to copy, and then locking it to the particular console afaik for example) I really must say they hit the nail on the head regarding HDD replacement/upgrading, it's something in all fairness that Sony got right the 1st time. i'm just hoping Microsoft get on top of it with the next gen by using optane, or by having a removable cover revealing an M.2 NVME slot and having it take over the OS duties etcetera from the hdd at the very least, even if the hdd was only usable for game clips afterwards it wouldn't bother me

Don't sleep on an SSD upgrade... continuous read times will def be better. But you will really see and increase when multiple processes are going on at the same time. Example, Open dashboard while in game to join party with no lag time. This is due to the much fast read time on the ssd. in game example on WZ: Loadout drops would lag when opening them up to select class - SSD will fix that issue Loadout Icons/operators not loading in main menu(sluggish) - SSD will fix that issue Installing game updates extremely fast compared to what they used to be.

@nexus3756
@nexus3756 6 лет назад
would a SHDD work with the xbox one? if so the value would be much better spent there. i just got a hybrid drive for 60 canadian dollars. a terabyte of storage and all my games load at least twice as fast with some games like skyrim special edition now taking only 2 seconds or less to load the majority of interiors and like 5 seconds tops to load a big area. meanwhile a terabyte ssd would cost like 500ish give or take. and the difference between a hybrid drive and a pure ssd is not worth it to me anymore.

something1random23 They are faster than normal drives. Nearly the same price. No reason to not get them. Especially for a console where you do the same thing constantly
@nexus3756
@nexus3756 6 лет назад
something1random23 they are considerably faster than hard drives. And ssd's are exponentially more expensive. And in the end getting a terabyte of faster than hard drive storage is better than getting 120 gb of storage that is faster than that but still can cost more at that amount of storage. And if you want the same amount. Of storage. Its like almost ten times more expensive. Is that even worth it? Thats the question to ask yourself. Especially since your paying for nothing more than load times for your games and if your on pc your os.

take it : with new Simply method,use newer 1/2 TB SSD(or 500gb) ,no partition needed(DELETE all partitions in SSD),put the new drive inside unformatted. Plug-in USB 8GB pendrive(formatted in NTFS) with latest osu1 www.xbox.com/xboxone/osu1 unzipped in root, folder $SystemUpdate (in USB pendrive obvious, not in SSD). Power on,select in menù system update offline and voilà new powered up One S/X, ultra Easy today. boot animation will restored with EVERY next system update,so check it and dont panic. PS: with this method 480/960GB doesnt works. best sata SSD to put in are 850/860EVO and MX500, dont use shitty cheap low end ssd.

I read all this stuff and am fairly knowledgeable with PCs and Hard Drives.....Launch times are just to save my time.....What I am more interested in is anything with framerate or actual gameplay speed or smoothness. I'm guessing a ton of stuff doesn't access the HDD or SSD during gameplay or multiplayer that has other factors. I have an SSD in my original Launch day Xbox One (that's next to my pre-launch Xbox 360.....Yes, I played PS4 and XB1 about 7 months before launch...don't ask) I am wondering, after my rant, if it's worth attaching my SSD (Samsung) to my XB1X for better gameplay or is it just load times? In other words, my question for the 3rd time is gameplay speed and FR? ;)

I play only on Console now. But use to play on PC.. So unlike Most console gamers that think Teraflops is the End all Be all of performance.. I know different and stay up-to-date on Hardware info. I will say I run a 1TB Samsung T5(external) on the X1X witch is what I play on(as well as PS4 Pro) and not only does it reduce load speeds be believe it or not graphics and performance is Better as well.. Now its not some big super astounding difference.. But it is pretty good... I really see no need to upgrade right now to the new consoles if you have an Xbox One X SSD.. I play my big games like cyberpunk and Assassin's Creed Odyssey/ Valhalla Control ect off my SSD and it really does help unlock what the X1X can actually do.. if you're wondering why I haven't upgraded to the Samsung T7 because there's really no need to spend the extra money for that kind of speed on an X1X..

You should have tested an internal SSD.. as they UI USB3 interface does take its toe on the bandwidth. I use a bunch of 1 TB M.2 NVMe on my Xbox X i.imgur.com/SHslAYd.jpg but of course overkill as both the M.2 to USB3.1 controller on the M2. enclosure + the Xbox USB3 interface all tumble it down to around sata3 and also lower, likely do the USB3 interface. but can't really test is speedwise when inserted into the Xbox X. So it would be interested to see how a fast sata3 drive actually performed fitted direcly to the sata3 connection inside, I reckon there would be a minor gain in regards to running it thrue the extern USB3 socket.

New question how do i put an ssd into an xbox 360 or ps3? The 360 won't recognize the ssd when inserted it into the slot. Hell I have a hdd that is the same brand hard drive that was in the xbox originally only difference is its 5 v 800 vs 5 v 700 and has more storage 500GB vs 60 gb and its half as thick physically yet it wont work on the xbox. both will work if i use a converter from sata to usb but i wanna plug them in the slot (also has slightly different writing on the label as well as a sticker covering up part of it but that should not affect anything)

And why do you assume console guys don't know PC lingo? I can only assume it's because we chose a console over a PC and if we supposedly knew what we were supposed to know we'd have a PC instead. Untrue. Because I know what I know about PC is why I actually choose a console. I hate this stereotype. This would be like driving a drag car as my daily driver.

is it possible they use the 5400rpm drives in the consoles to avoid distortion? consoles air flow capabilities are subpar to say the least, most laptops have better solutions. And a hard drive needle already makes the hard disk pretty hot. You think with the air temp inside and the poor flow, that a 7200rpm drive may become damaged much sooner than a 5400rpm drive? All that trapped heat PLUS the heat from the needle cant be good on the hard drive. maybe thats why they use slower ones and they just dont use ssd because console profit margins are thin. most companies make a bulk of their money from the game royalties. the consoles only give about a 10% gain on each system sold

So the first thing l want to say that when u build a pc u still have to put everything apart and put all parts again in a chase or on the mother board,so your point that u need to open the xbox1x to change the harddrive does not match .The 2 thing l want to mentinon is to buy a ssd for just one or two games where u get faster loading times it is no worth the money,instead it is bettter to get a 7200rpm hard drive . The 3 thing is why should we open ours xbox1x when we can connect a new hard drive via usb3vport outside of the console in that way we can bring games around with us as many gamers do.Xbox1x is a 4k machine and l know that this makes u unhappy but that how things r ,and there r not many graphicks card that can run games at 4k like Xbox1x maybe 2 or 3 as l know.somthing to think about next time u do a video like this one.

Steve, would it be possible to repeat the test with a PS4 pro with the same games (except PUBG of course)? I realize there are a lot of vids for PS4 pro out already. But they mostly cover older games. Your selection is much more actual. Another question: What about drive wear down caused by the constant game recording feature? Wouldn't it be better to use an SSD only externally since the internal drive is always used for game recording (at least on PS4 afaik)

Thorsten Metzler Modern SSDs will be fine. You can do your own research but many drives can write Petabytes of data before outright failure. They will still write hundreds of thousands Terabytes of data before they start losing storage.
