A short test of preamps to compare. Maybe you have a Saffire and want to hear the difference you could achieve. A acoustic guitar with a AKG P420 mic in cardioid pattern direct to interface with no post processing.
To me it sounds like the Saffire has got a bit more bottom end than the SSL 2, giving you a lot more to work with at the editing/mixing stage. The SSL 2 doesn't sound bad at all and I do like the 4K mode, but I wouldn't use the SSL 2 in the non-4K mode because I do not see any advantage to it in comparison to the Saffire Pro. So, the reason why I would actually use the SSL 2 is for the 4K mode but only when I want that particular type of sound. Other than that, I 'd say that the Saffire Pro is still a really good all-around interface with good all-around preamps.
The Saffire Pro is fatter. The SSL is Thinner. I have a Pro 40 with the Behringer UMC 1820 w/ada8200 aggregated on my MP running macOS MONTEREY. I like the Pres on Pro 40. They are easily distinguishable from the Midas pres on the Behringer units. Not saying which I prefer over the other, yet they are both useful in some kind of degree. Also, I use external mic/compressors before plugging into these devices so that they don't have to be pushed past 12 o clock (mid). The Saffire Pro 40 sound quality is stunning. This interface is built like a tank and is still quite useful although it is firewire. Fortunately, i have a MP 5,1 that's still running like a tank. I also have other cmptrs. But this one is strictly for tracking up to 24track 'live' bands in my fairly mid sized 'live' room. When it comes to Audio Interfaces, buy whatever you can afford. Yet try to get an interface that's expandable. The more inputs, the better. But it can get pricey bc you'll need more mics, cables etc😂. Rock on guys 🥂
