E channel for the win on this track... Sounded cleaner and had that airy top end while the G brought the vocal more up front and emphasized more of the throat tones / voice grit ... I use the G on drums and E on everything else, but I might have to try that E on drums too !

TheRealPistolP Bith Channels are dope but, I'd have to go with the G channel on this one it added more grit and bite to her vocal.

Chase McWilliams definitely did add more grit.. guess it comes down to preference 🤷🏽‍♂️

TheRealPistolP Yeah he was saying E channel for pop, r&b & hip hop / Rock on the G channel. I'm working on a track with all E channel strips but I think I'll dupe the settings with a G channel! The harmonics are crunchy AF. Yes, it's all preference it's great to have two options. I'm just waiting on the 9000K emulation!!!

To me, the differences in the midrange can be heard but the reason they're subtle (in this video) is because the HMF settings on the G-channel are somewhat tamed.

I don't think anyone seems to realize but if you look at the settings he has between the e channel and the g channel, they are not matched

yea they both have diffrent tones and bells and whatever basically to show you want the one that pulls out sweeter sonics i think the E channe; and the G is +18db
@cap217cap217
@cap217cap217 4 года назад
I have watched this a few times and that always bothers me. The mid range girth of the G is clear here but his settings make it even more. On the E he is scooping 2.5db of 3k and on the G he is boosting 3db of 1.5 (these are approx). That difference is what makes the G sound more different in this clip. I used to work on a G console and I own the SSL waves plug ins (I have since 2007 or whenever they came out) and I also own the brainworks SSL channels. The waves is more detailed and clear in the top end and more round in the bottom. The brainworks is more mid focused and gets almost harsh in the highs but like a console would. Im not saying harsh in a bad way, I am saying harsh in the sense of how you would hea the difference in this video of the G vs the E. To me thats more real of what an SSL does. The Waves E is like a R Channel, very clear and accurate. The G is a little more real. But brainworks is more real than these. To be fair, I never worked on a real E console and only have these comparisons to picture what Im hearing. But the E to me has a more sparkly top and round bottom and smooth mids. But the more I mix, the more I like having the raw mids of a G there. I can always clean that up if needed but mixes lately are getting too clean and clear so the G adds a realness to me.

@@WordsAxis720 There's no way she's singing "The Good Side of You Remains In My Head"! Is this another example of pop musicians not finding english to be a sufficient language to use for singing, but are too lazy to learn another one, so they make up a childish make-believe version of english? The indie-pop movement around 2010-2011 did this, and I really thought (hoped) we were past this now :)

On small, Bluetooth speakers, the G totally wins; it balances out some of the tinny-ness. E sounds more lively on a good system because of that high-freq excitement.

Even though settings aren't the same , the low mid in G is quite thick and the E has 2.3K ish bite . I was doing a female vocal and the E was pretty intense in the upper mids , went for the G .
@ddsrecording

Comparing upper-mid settings on both, why a boost at 1.5k on the G Channel and a 2k cut on the E? Hard to compare, especially when he mentions G channel has more midrange (no doubt, due to 1.5k boost on G and 2 k cut on E I'd think)...Hmm...

I find myself reaching for the g channel more often, personally…my rationalization being that I tend to bring in channel strips for sources that want some energy and movement. An acoustic guitar that sounds GREAT is gonna get pro q and maybe some low ratio/high threshold compression. But an overhead bus whose energy I’m trying to melt with a 76’d room mic…that’s a g channel job, imo. You’ll get your normal processing with that funny, ssl syrup that’s tough to describe.

The E-Channel seemed a little more focused in the mids and on the high end, but the G-Channel seemed a little more punchy with the lows. I got the E-Channel when Waves was having their special last year, but I haven't really gotten the chance to dig into it yet.

G has it's uses. You can see that it's definitely a difference. Does the G fit with modern music? Not always. I feel that if you're trying to go for a number 1, in any of the modern genres just get the E channel. I mean they used it on closer by the chainsmokers. And for good reason too.
@domwujek8900

I can barely hear the difference its so small to me that Im probably trying to hear the E sound ang G sound. I can hear the difference on when you listen to a mix and have few instances of E or G. 4 EVERYONE SAYING SETTINGS DONT MATCH: THE EQ DESIGNS ARE DIFFERENT SO IF HE MATCHED THEM SONICALLY THE NUMBERS ON POTENTIOMETERS WONT MATCH :)
@RedButtonTV1
@RedButtonTV1 6 лет назад
yeah, but arent there different settings on each? or am i missing something...
@chrisp7268
@chrisp7268 6 лет назад
on the vocal yeah, but I mean let's be real, they have to demonstrate a difference somehow... Most of the real differences are under-the-hood so unless you know what you're doing, half the time it's just your workflow being affected and not the actual sound (and if it is, it's subtle as mentioned in the beginning of the vid). On that note, the snare in the overall mix had a bit more weight on the G-channel and the mid-range had a bit more "thump". That was about it for me.
@RedButtonTV1
@RedButtonTV1 6 лет назад
yeah but the changes made on sw do exactly that, what the difference is, which you also described... that's not really a comparison...

@al35mm

I noticed that too just after he said the G had more mid range - I saw mid boost on the G and cut on the E. Maybe he was trying to match to demonstrate the range difference.
@RedButtonTV1
@RedButtonTV1 6 лет назад
neh... more like, 'buy it, the old one you have now ain't so good', the new one is better'... ...and maybe it is, but one can't see it from this particular video. energy being fed into the plugin must be the same when outputing from the plugin, when parameters are on zero and it must sound the same as if being bypassed. 100% in 100% out signal. because otherwise we get colorization of the signal, and that is a bad thing. so this video is in reality saying that, either plugin changes the original sound (not good), or it's the same except for the color of the knobs... if the algorithms were rewritten, this video can't & doesn't show... agree?

Could b multiple reasons If ur in a non sound treated room there can be phase issues with the way sound reverbs around the room and that might mean it attenuates down on certain freqs that might be normally more audible. Too much low end could drown out high and mids in a echoy space aswel. If ur monitors are going through a preamp make sure they dont have any eq’s from hardware or software (windows sound settings).

i didn't think i'd be able to hear the difference. i usually can't, but i could here. just noticing the talk of the different settings. the knobs are the same, i do not see Q. i guess Q is short for the very long EQ abbreviation for equalization?
@jtpinnyc
@jtpinnyc 6 лет назад
Q is a measure of bandwidth, i.e. the slope of the bell curve. A narrow Q (higher number) means you're boosting a narrow range of frequencies, while a wide Q (lower number) means you're boosting a wide range of frequencies. Wide Q's sound more natural when boosting, whilst narrow Q's sound more natural when cutting.

I can confirm you they all failed. They cannot do better that 50%, so this is not better than chance. You can hear some differences of course, but you need a very good calibrated monitoring system, a big neutral room. But those who says that it changes everything are completly possessed for me. The main mistake that is done with this type of comparison, is the volume problem. If you really put the same volume (with a vu meter / peak meter for example), many of this people will be lost.
