Drive a nut up the bolt threads first Rick before cutting the bolt threads, then the nut can be backed off clearing the threads. Before mounting/fastening the bolts for whatever, I use anti-seize for future removal and I think you do too. We love this Channel and after 7 notifications today, we go to your channel first. Thumbs up!

humor me, Rick. Do you happen to have a tap and die set for common thread sizes? I wouldn't be without one with my projects. That and run a nut on the bolt before you cut it off (as was mentioned).

What a super job your radar system is going to do when you are at sea. You will be 100% safe sailing at night with the information it gives you. It’s a must have for all yacht’s on the oceans. Most of your followers end their comments “stay safe”, this is system is your “third eye”

I could never get rid of a SSB Radio Captain. I entered the world of electronics and communication BECAUSE of the SSB radio :) I love the radio. It may be out of fashion, but it is still independent from any service provider and you can talk a lot around the world for free. When all the communication system cease to work in the middle of the ocean.. the radio is king.
@SailingSophisticatedLady
@SailingSophisticatedLady 3 года назад
Yes I agree to a point... but if all your other systems are down, it's typically due to a major electrical issue like a lightning strike.. which means the SSB would most likely be gone too.. having said that, I will likely keep it in storage somewhere, but antennas and grounding planes are always a big issue on a boat.
@leewahler3058
@leewahler3058 3 года назад
SSB could be useful when you cross the Pacific. SATCOM is extensive
@stephenhunter70

In Australia Marine SSB is still available, satellite services can be problematic due mainly to the requirement for the receiving station to be manned when in use.

You did an excellent job with the radio panel. Obviously one who appreciates the detailed finish. And on top (literally) of your game by mopping down the solar panels while you’re up there. I’d be curious if a bearing in the radar swing-arm would be more reliable radar imagery. You, my sir, blow my mind every time. Tip when cutting bolts shorter - spin a nut onto the threads past the point where you will cut. Then cut, once you have cut it and filed any sharp bits off spin the bolt back off and it will fix the threads for you on its way off the shank.

There's one more reason it's called "Sophisticated" Lady. When I communicate with the Space Station & other satellites, I use computer controlled Doppler correction as the frequency continually shifts up or down depending upon if it's coming towards you or away from you. They use the same principle in the radar. You are prepping well for the long crossings where all this will provide a much more accurate, safer, & mentally comfortable crossings. Nice work!

Rick, doppler effect is outstanding. FYI. last August I had a carotid doppler - an imaging test that uses ultrasound to examine the carotid arteries located in the neck to see if there are narrowing or blockages of the arteries. I also remember watching a TV program that demonstrated the Doppler effect by listening to the changes of the sound as a train locomotive passed by. The sound of the locomotive coming was high-pitched that changed to low pitched after it passed. Similar to the red and green images shown on your screen. Way cool, Rick. Have fun playing...er...testing the new toy...er...tool! :¬) Webhead USA

Hey Rick, on your radar on the overhead you might want to put a line if you will to that pendulum and make it won't swing too far port or starboard or in a high wind it could go 360 and tear everything up, don't let it go a full 90 degrees or It will be at its furthest point ...good luck on your Pacific journey.
@SailingSophisticatedLady
@SailingSophisticatedLady 3 года назад
even in high winds and extreme heeling conditions, it wouldn't go past 80-90 degrees max unless the boat capsized.. in which case we have other problems on our mind.. plus it has a friction bearing in it that doesn't let it pendulum when we are sailing, it will just slide over from one side to the other when we tack and then sit there :)

One lady didn't have a single light available on her dinghy, and, also couldn't hear a boat coming because of her outboard motor at night. Was hit by a speedboat going 40 to 60 knots ! Nearly killed her and the lady in the boat with her ! Not only that, wasn't wearing flotation, very common. Lucky to be alive.

Are you not worried about fatigue and abrasion of the wires that loop around the swivel where you hung the radar? There is going to be a lot of movement of the wires there. I think if you moved the bend in the wires up above the swivel slightly there will be less bending and abrasion of the wires.
