Dear ComteAnckarstrom, Thank you for posting this. I agree with your comment about Hotter. He is the best interpreter of lied that I have ever heard. He has an integrity in his singing with is without equal.
Masterful, humble interpreter, not trying to overrun the song, so beautiful in everything here. Best work on this almost too popular lieder... Thank you,
Most singers take a virtuoso approach and make this a 'big' song, a showpiece. It has that capability, but Hotter sings the sentiment, the pleading of the words is embodied in his voice.
I've always interpreted the poem of this lied not as a simple seremade, but as Beast begging for the attention of a Beauty he deep down knows won't come to him. Hans Hotter's voice fits that role flawlessly.
There is so much to study, to reflect upon in this extraordinarily restrained and beautiful interpretation. And the partnership between Hotter and Moore is unmatched. Thank you for posting.
Ständchen Serenade Leise flehen meine Lieder Softly my songs plead Durch die Nacht zu Dir; Through the night to you; In den stillen Hain hernieder, Down into the silent grove, Liebchen, komm’ zu mir! Beloved, come to me! Flüsternd schlanke Wipfel rauschen Slender treetops whisper and rustle In des Mondes Licht; In the moonlight; Des Verräters feindlich Lauschen My darling, do not fear Fürchte, Holde, nicht. That the hostile betrayer will overhear us. Hörst die Nachtigallen schlagen? Do you not hear the nightingales call? Ach! sie flehen Dich, Ah, they are imploring you, Mit der Töne süssen Klagen With their sweet, plaintive songs Flehen sie für mich. They are imploring for me. Sie verstehn des Busens Sehnen, They understand the heart’s yearning, Kennen Liebesschmerz, They know the pain of love, Rühren mit den Silbertönen With their silver notes Jedes weiche Herz. They touch every tender heart. Lass auch Dir die Brust bewegen, Let your heart, too, be moved, Liebchen, höre mich! Beloved, hear me! Bebend harr’ ich Dir entgegen! Trembling, I await you! Komm’, beglücke mich! Come, make me happy!
Beautiful, but very much of its time. It's funny how there are fashions even in lieder interpretations. If somebody sang this like him now, I don't think it would work.
A. Schier wish if somebody would sing the lied in this way! this is true art and this is the spirit of Schubert. Unfortnately today lied is spoken, not sung, the love, the eros inside the lied are gone. I fall in love with this great artist.
Softly plead my songs Through the night to you; Down to the silent grove, Darling, come to me! Whisper sweet nothings In the moonlight; Listening to the traitor's hostile My fair, don't be afraid. Hear the nightingales beat? Ah! They beg you, With the sounds of sweet laments Beg for me. You understand the sinews of the bosom, Know love's pain, Stirring with the silver tones Every soft heart. Let your chest move too, Sweetheart, hear me! I await you trembling. Come, make me happy.
@@ethiopianenterprises1524 thanks! FINALLY!!! lol.. they really talking about awaiting the trembling and knowing bosoms and all that, huh?!? WELL, WELL, WELL!!
