St. Ambrose is one of the greatest Fathers in the history of the Catholic faith. A statesman turned bishop, he laid the foundation for the proper relationship between Church and State. A supremely holy man of God, Ambrose was very concerned with the spiritual growth of the laity and was the catalyst for the conversion of the great St. Augustine. All this from a man who was baptized only a short time before becoming bishop! Join Matthew Leonard and Fathers of the Church expert Mike Aquilina as they explore the history and impact of St. Ambrose of Milan.

More than one of Ambrose's contemporaries record him as having previously lived unchastely. Jerome, who was of course sore that he (Jerome) did not get made bishop of Rome, was critical about how Ambrose went directly from his old life of sin to being a consecrator of virgins without any intervening period of humble penitence. But another biographer who was a personal friend of Ambrose also speaks of Ambrose's past unchaste life (can't remember that name offhand). For him this theme of virginity was not only because of his sister but because it was a way of expressing that now he embraced perfect continence, and associating himself with chastity in a way that was necessary for a Christian leader. It's really unfortunate that all these three men, Ambrose, Jerome and Augustine, by themselves being penitents and exalting women who needed no penance, enshrined Roman society's double standard within the Church. Everyone is meant to live chastely, and everyone's chastity is of value. But to this day it's not treated that way in the Church.

“It is preferable to have a virgin mind than a virgin body. Each is good if each be possible; if it be not possible, let me be chaste, not to man but to God.” St. Ambrose, Concerning Virgins
