A St. Charles County man bought a car off Craigslist and later found out the odometer had been rolled back by 100,000 miles. How can you determine if the mileage on a car you're buying is correct?
That is what that means. he wants to have the conversation off camera. The news reporter should have agreed to that and then stated what the conversation entailed afterwards. Seems like the buyer is shady too. A shady seller and a shady buyer is likely what happened meaning the buyer knew some of this already but went along because he thought he was getting a good deal
The feds really need to step up their game on odometer scammers. Those who fall victim to these scams should still be allowed to register the vehicle. Its not their fault the odometer was messed with. Just put on the title that the true milage is unknown due to tampering.
"The feds really need to step up" According to today's news, if Trump wins the election, he plans to downsize the Federal Government and make all Federal employees be loyal to him. Still waiting for the Feds to do something? If so, be careful who you vote for during the next election.
Just got a car fax on my Honda. Odometer reads 111k but carfax last service was done in 2020 and my Honda had 180k!!! Previous services all say 143k , 160k ..smh I feel so cheated
@@moveitmf1951 I was able to register it thankfully. In the state of FL any car that’s 10 years or older is exempt for odometer discloser. I assume that’s how these “stealerships” get away with it. I filed a complaint with FL attorney generals office but they want tons of paperwork proving they sold me a bs rolled back odometer vehicle. They make it impossible for these crooks to be accountable
MIKE: *...if you want to talk LIKE A MAN...give me a call* REPORTER: calls but Mike never answers AFTER already coming to his house TO TALK LIKE A MAN 😂🙄
That almostt to me few days ago. It was a listing on Facebook marketplace. My cousin and I went to see the car, test drove it and except for a few minor problems the car seemed pretty good. I was about to buy but then I was like you know what, better safe then sorry, so I checked the carfax report and guess what the car had 234k miles, nowhere near the 104k on the odometer. I was so mad but I'm glad I checked the carfax before it was too late. Fuckin hate these scammers
Not really because both the seller and buyer are breaking the law by not paying taxes on the car sale. Most of these sales take place where they lie and say the car was sold for 1 dollar to avoid taxes
@@faridsolati That is NOT true for model years 2010 or older. This vehicle is a 2008 so it is EXEMPT and ON YOU if you buy it. It is like buying a hoopty. If you buy a hoopty and it falls apart on the way home that is ON YOU because you should not have bought that old hoopty in the first place. Who buys an OLD 2008 vehicle over 75K miles in the first place, especially in a place like St. Louis where it rains and snows heavily (ie causes extra RUST and CORROSION on cars)? That 8K would have been better spent as a down payment on a used cpo toyota suv.
The best part is the scam that happens when buying a car that nobody has noticed and still goes on although not common. The odometer is the least of your issue if you fall for the other one. You could end up with a stolen vehicle and loss of finances.
Yes it happened to me. I bought a car and it turned out to be stolen from a rental company with fake vin and title. I lost $22500 . Cops couldn’t care less . FYI I paid with cash and cashier check . Cops knew these people but don’t care . I’m screwed
Simple State of Missouri put a lien on the man's house for amount scammed. He knew what he did was wrong, the hanging up and not owning up to speak his side and or talk willingly is a clear sign of guilt.
I always buy by a police station or where I know camera s are working. And most don’t want to meet there. Especially a police station. So that’s a Red flag rite there !
Why would any one want to go to a police station to sell you a car. I know I wouldn’t. I can meet you at the dmv or at a store or even at my house but why at the police station.
Let me guess. The guy didn't get his money and no one was held liable. How come the reporter didn't ask the buyer if Chris was the guy that sold him the car? Didn't show picture?
@An Honest Reviewer yes. They thank God. I took it in because it keep shutting off when I was driving. And ended up rebuilding the whole engine. After that,it purred like a kitten until Iost,it after I got hurt on the job and lost my house as well. With only one year left to pay on it 😐
I’m sure that guy has been doing that to many people not just to this one. He needs to be fined big-time, thrown in jail and lose his license to sell cars.
In Texas, odometer fraud is punishable by fines and even imprisonment. To prevent falling victim to odometer fraud, it is recommended to have a trusted mechanic inspect the vehicle and obtain a vehicle history report before making a purchase. A mechanic can help you find signs of odometer fraud.
at one point I wanted to go into the car business, took a job with a reclaimed title business here in Utah that repaired and salvaged these cars for resale. Needless to say the things I saw daily have changed my mind. Rolling back odometers, lying about the previous damage, lying about bent frames and deployed airbags etc.. all I can say is do NOT buy a car from ROYAL AUTO in SLC, UT>
It's a federal offense that is a felony to alter the odometers on cars, the fine is $10,000 Dollars and 10 years in prison. That's why it is important to know who is selling the car to you. Ask for the driver license and take the name and the number and the address on that driver license; if he can't provide you with that then don't buy the car. If you don't care losing your money then it's your decision.
they have a place you can get that odometer changed outside of kent washington. if you replace a motor you take it in and they change the odometer with the miles on the motor you bought to replace
I inspect cars and for my services guarantee that the car is legit. If any issues occur with the car that I cleared I'll buy it from you. I usually save my clients more than my fee.
@@michellej7734 Muscle shoals Alabama. I have been known to travel depending on a few common factors! My sister was cheated years ago and I decided to try and make sure others don't fall prey!
In Houston tx small dealerships do that all the time they either been flooded and completely clean up or been replace with awful cheap junk yard engines or transmissions is why I am glad I quit those mechanic jobs at small dealerships I am just not made that way now I work for a big dealership where things are correct and costumers get what they pay for
new law needs to be passed that the person/business that is proven to have done this should be fined 1 dollar per mile the odometer is off and 1/2 of that fine=dollar amount should be given to the person they victimized and half to to the court that heard the case...
This happened to me last night. The private party seller advertised the vehicle as having 93k miles. We made the transaction and when we looked closer at the title after the purchase. The title and most recent emissions say 200k miles. I reached out to the seller by text and called and left a voicemail and I have been ghosted. All I gotta say is bad guys suck!!!
@@Rayhan-fj7es dang I’m sorry to hear that happened. We ended up dumping a bunch of money into repairs and then trading it in. We took a significant loss. I may only buy from dealerships going forward so I have a path for recourse and (hopefully) never get scammed again.
I bought an 18’ Silverado a few months ago with 11k miles. I was very skeptical at first, but the Carfax and the service records matched up. A Carfax is good to have but useless if the seller bought the vehicle and racked up a lot of miles and then ran them back before they sold it. It’s the risk you take buying a pre owned.
Pretty sure I just caught my local Nissan rolling back odometer about 10,000 miles. I asked if they could go look in the car and tell me the mileage he said 3,000 miles. I asked why their picture says almost 12,000 miles. He said you’re right it’s almost 12,000 but that cars been sold. I said you just asked me to come see the car one minute ago and he was like yeah somebody put a deposit down the car is gonna be sold. It looks really bad. Then they stopped responding to me completely. First dealership that’s ever stopped responding to me about buying a car. Before that they also tried to sell me a 2022 and didn’t tell me it was in an accident in January. Their competitors are the ones who told me. They wanted to make a car that had 12,000 miles look like it only had 3,000 so they could get more for it and present it as a new car. Unfortunately there are a lot of people who don’t even look
Can you imagine going to the lengths of 100k odometer rollback to sell a used car. I thought that used cars were a premium. Sounds like a scam. Probably money laundering operation.
Thanks for the info, now I’ll go roll my odometer back as well. Amazon here I come! 😂 I mean, geez, these media outlets do not realize the information they give out creates more scamming.
These cars have so many computer chips in them. I dont understand why there is not a chip that retains the otiginal mileage even if the odometer is rolled back. It would be easy as all a car dealer needs to do is access the cars computer, and get the actual mileage from that and see if it aligns with what the odometer on the dash panel reads. I mean come on computers are supposed to be smart. Just because you delete or change something does not mean its gone. Computers can be back checked. Now older cars with a mechanical odometer, thats different, but stil if it had a computer, then the mileage should be retained on that. Auto manufactures time to step up your game against odometer tampering.
It happened with me and there’s nothing I could do about it. I bought the car through Facebook marketplace, when tried contact the seller he already blocked and there was no I could contact him.
How dumb are ppl in the land of the free? seriously. if you buy a car, no matter if its via facebook or whatnot, you always draw up a contract. there are boiler plates that can be used. on that there should be the vehicle data as well as those from buyer and seller.
It won't be too surprising some morning for the neighbors to wake up to police tape and the coroner at his house. All it takes is the wrong screwing to the wrong person.
I know 2 dealerships in NJ that are doing this right now well probably not right at this second but you know what I mean…. Shits crazy cause they literally wouldn’t make any money at all if they didn’t do that. I think carvana does it too with “some” of their cars🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
You don't have but a device or roll back the millage. If you buy a instrument cluster same model has your vehicle that has say 130 thousand miles and yours has 250 thousand miles. When you swap out your cluster for the other one the millage will show up has 130 thousand
I had that same experience buying a Nissan Sentra, someone tried to sell me a 150,000+ mile car as 40K miles. It didn't work though, the car was just too beat up.
Happened to me. With a 2002 Suburban. I thought it had 110k miles. Turned out to have 220k miles. I just sold it but I made sure the title was branded TRUE MILEAGE UNKNOWN and was completely clear with the new owner.
Copy the VIN # and go online to get a VIN report for just $1. You will see every owner, whether or not there were any body damage/accident reports and you will get the correct odometer reading. This is how I found out that a car I was going to buy had the incorrect mileage. The guy showed me the mileage @ 154,000 miles, but when I ran a VIN report the correct mileage was actually 277.000 miles and had been in an accident, salvage title. Do your home work before you buy a used car. A paper trail can land the seller in jail!
Sometimes cluster messes up ,and replaced with one from salvage, and when it's sold the owner will use the odometer reading from used cluster, which messes up the history of the miles in that car.
The mileage is stored in more than one place like the ECU (or DME), the instrument cluster, and light control module. All three need to match, and this can be done with dealer level programming devices or laptops.
Well it's stupid all they have to do is check vin numbers on cars dash, door, and other places,if they all match retitle that vehicle.Kind of weird DMV won't title that vehicle over milage issues.
Carfax don’t show exactly everything of the vehicle there’s was some people that checked carfax and said the vehicle wasn’t in a accident but when they did a check up on it they saw it was in a accident from the color being on places where it’s not supposed to be at
I believe this happend to me and I will be reporting a further investigation to my local Dmv in regards to this. I brought a Nissan Murano from a “gentlemen” at a local dealership who claimed the vehicle was under 100k in miles . It wasn’t until I was handed the title that it stated a whole different set of numbers .( much higher) Something was off but I got side tracked with the birth of my daughter and taking care of my children so it was in the back of my busy mom schedule.. until recently when I brought this problem back to light so I will be going to the dmv tomorrow morning to get this investigation going to determine what is going on . I talked to one of the boys from the dealership and he claims that it was the Dmv’s fault however when I had talked to a gentleman from the dmv over the phone the previous day he stated that the miles on the title are the actual miles stated from the previous owner all the way in Virginia. I live in another state.. and I feel bad that I didn’t took the time to further investigate this deal when I had the chance before buying..
Just check the vin on carfax or cars for sale I was gonna buy a is300 and when I looked at the vin first on the website the odometer is rolled back or either changed the gauge cluster or instrument cluster and it was a salvage title and was told by the owner it was a clean title
I'm a used car dealer, and I've noticed quite a few vehicles at auction that have "mileage discrepancies". About half the vehicles are from the local state (this state requires an inspection every year, and the mileage is logged every inspection, it ends up on CarFax, AutoCheck, and other NMVTIS services). But half the vehicles are from neighboring states, and all 3 neighboring states do NOT have annual inspections, so unless the car gets an oil change at a shop that reports the mileage to CarFax, the mileage is never logged. So I carry an OBD2 reader that can read the mileage on the ECM or ABS module. Usually when someone rolls back an odometer, they just rolled back the dash, but not the mileage that is logged on the modules. The auction I go to prohibits OBD2 scanners, but mine is small and I sneak it in anyways. I've seen many trucks and SUVs that have "lost" 100k miles or more. Every now and then I see a car that has a mileage discrepancy, but usually it's trucks and SUVs. Also, not every mileage discrepancy is an odometer rollback. I've seen one car in which the years back it had 40k miles, the following year it was 50k miles, then the year after it had 254k miles, than 62k miles. AutoCheck flagged it as an odometer roll back because it went from 254 down to 62, but I think that whoever entered the mileage accidentally "fat fingered" the wrong mileage, because I doubt that someone drove 200k+ miles in one year, unless it's a commercial driver.
Not sure why this keeps happening. Carfax is cheap insurance and so is the ODO statement from the DMV. I know it’s hard to tell. My diesel truck has 260k on it and it looks like a 30k mile truck still inside and out so be careful.
Nowadays, 8k is normal for a shitbox chevy with 200,000 miles and they probably replaced the instrument cluster from a junkyard that’s the only way you can get a false number on a newer car
@@kid5042 Absolutely. Not saying analog is safer/better by any means but if it’s digital it can definitely be altered. Just look at what’s currently going on with kids stealing Kias and Hyundais with USB drives lol
People who sale cars online don’t do the required paper work to sell the car with all the other problems comes liens on the car and the buyer will not be able to register the car and insurance and drive the car and lose their money
Happened to me in Houston, TX. Gullo Auto Sales on Airline sold me a f150 that said 103k but was really at 234k. After trying to get both local and federal authorities to help they both did nothing. Car Fax from a reputable dealer for me now
You can roll back odometers. But you can’t roll back the transmission log. Dude who sold the car and allegedly changed the title, is what’s wrong with the world today, hope he sits in a cell.
Toyota estimas that are being sold in Australia all have low mileage. They don't come with any service papers. They are not sold in a display car outlets. They are all stored in a yard somewhere. Someone should investigate. ? ODOMETER ROLL BACK. PLEASE DONT BUY UNTIL YOU SEE THE SERVICE HISTORY OR EVIDENCE OF ODOMETER READINGS IN THE SERVICE BOOKLET. when you book an appointment to test drive it, it will be in a neighbourhood somewhere.
You're not understanding that engines and parts have a life cycle that ends the higher the mileage. He was robbed several years with that car. It's a big deal.
