It's rod review time!
Have you ever had the butt of your rod get caught on your PFD or shirt while sitting and fishing in your kayak?
I've had that happen to me before and thankfully it wasn't when I was fighting a big fish or setting the hook, but if it had caused me to miss a fish, I would not have been happy.
So to make sure that doesn't happen, I decided to give St. Croix's new Mojo Yak a try.
This rod was designed for kayak fishermen because it has a very short butt, which gives you more room to maneuver when you're casting or fighting a fish.
I've been using it for the past few months and I finally know it enough to give it a full and honest review.
In this video, you'll learn:
- Why this rod is great for kayak anglers
- Why this rod might not be great for you (depending on the type of fishing you're doing)
- The specs of this rod
- And much more
Have any questions about this rod?
Have you used it before?
Let me know down in the comments.

I have this rod in a caster that I paired with a curado dc. It is absolutely my favorite set up. Love the accuracy that it gives me. I plan to get the spinner model to pair with my penn battle II.

Thanks very much for this report. I ordered one of these rods last week! Good to know it seems like i made the right decision for kayak fishing. Can’t wait until it arrives so i can test it out. A Diawa Fuego LT 3000 will be fitted on the 7’-6” med rod. I worried a bit about the front heavy balance I had anticipated due to the short handle. Surly something that can be gotten used to. Thanks again.

I'll have to check this one out. I've been using a Shimano GLF rod which seems to have a similar build. Very good for inshore kayak fishing as well. I love my Mojo Inshore. I use that rod for almost everything.

I'm not a diehard fisherman and I'll confess I bought the rod because it is hard to find a quality "adult" rod in purple. Most fishing I do is pan fish, catfish & bass. Sounds like I bought the wrong rod for that, but I want a quality rod that has purple in it.

What size reel were you using? I have that exact rod (7'MF) on order, and im going to attach my Diawa 2500 Fuego LT to it.

Hey Wyatt, thanks for the insight and information. In looking over the St. Croix website I see that the Mojo Yak series has both a Freshwater and Saltwater version of each. Can y'all expand on the key differences, of either these or other fishing rods, that define them as Fresh or Saltwater? Thanks again for your time.

I've never owned any rod more expensive than $60, but I've held rods like the St. Croix and Fenwicks. I'm thinking about the Fenwick inshore rod, i loved the feel and balance of it in hand so it would be interesting comparing the two brands. I use a shimano scimitar and so far I am liking it especially for $40 (The butt is very long haha).

Just cut the butt on my Fenwick for the kayak - extra long butt and it was a real pain (in the). Worked out ok and integrated some steel for counterbalance. Came out ok - will have to see if it improves the fishing - medium light fast 7 footer - the long butts are just too much of a problem in the yak!

Nurmle - Sorry brother - it is a freshwater bass rod (different than “salt” designated rods), so way too light for snook and reds - For that I’d say an inshore (saltwater) rod - maybe an inshore medium. So the measurements are kind of a rough estimate the way I look at it, to some degree - as different manufacturers produce rods in the same designation, that often fish very different - then the “bends” can be different (ie parabolic vs others). Kind of confusing eh? Jigging rod and your going for reds and snook? I’d say medium or medium heavy just like you have - I take it your inshore and not too deep? I’m a northeast (USA) fisherman - so smallies, largies and pike in freshwater and then stripers, black bass and flounder in salt. Hope that helps?

So it looks like you will have problems with large fish? Was this intended as a fresh water rod.

I bought the 7'6" med/hvy power/fast action version a couple weeks ago, so I'm happy to hear you like this rod. I'm considering putting a Daiwa Fuego LT 3000 on it. Do you think this would be a good fit ? It's between the Fuego and the Daiwa Saltist BackBay 3000. I'm on the fence, so your opinion would help !

Definitely research the actual differences between each reel before you buy. You'd be surprised how many "trusted" manufacturers (looking at you diawa and shimano) change 1 or 2 components on a reel then increase the price by 50%. You have to understand the whole fishing market is wrought with bullshit marketing. Check out Alan Hawk reel reviews for more info, he seems to be one of the only guys I could find that actually disassembles the reels and analyzes the internals, rather than just stating the claimed specs and saying "yea, its real smooth".

@@pmang6 Thanks ! I know Tackle Advisors has a lot of videos where he completely takes apart reels also. I've watched many of his. My problem is there are several reels I would like to take a look at, but all the stores around here are completely sold out of just about everything. I'm pretty much left with online sales. Thanks for you advice !

I don't think that the handle is actually any shorter than their standard series. The 7'6 Mojo Yak is 11" to the trigger according to the handle chart on St Croix's website, whereas the 7'6 in the Legend Elite series is 10" to the trigger... So either St. Croix's website is wrong or this is a gimmick. I love St. Croix, but I am not sold on these rods. Does anyone have the same size in the yak and standard series that can measure it to confirm?

Ok, as a member of Salt Strong I bought this rod the first one broke on a whopping 16 years much trout. After waiting over a month for the replacement rod, that one broke on a 22 inch redfish. On a separate note they no longer use Fuji seats or guides, your review was compelling but the rod is no longer the one you reviewed. I will stick with TFO and Waterloo from this time going ahead! Thank you

Salt Strong, so a rod is a rod but having it balanced with the right reel makes all the difference. I have this Mojo Yak rod in 7'6 and had a Penn 440ssg reel on it. The reel felt to heavy for the rod. It was 14.3 oz. I actually hooked a large ray and after about 10 mins to the yak my arm was sore. After watching Tony's review on the Stradic 3000 7.9oz I ordered one. Perfect is my thought on this rod and reel combination. I have it lined with 10lb braid, 25lb leader. Now not only is the Stradic super smooth like a machined instrument but the rod itself feels right. I plan to fish over the next day or two and can add more if I catch any fish.

They are very impressive rods but why purple on the mojos???
@liquidleblanc1920
@liquidleblanc1920 3 года назад
The rods in the Mojo Line have always had a deep purple color to them so I’m assuming they just matched that up together when using the Winn grips on the Mojo Yak, each series of rods they produce are all one set color depending on the series of rod. From Black, green, purple, white, blue and so on for each category. Hope I did not over explain haha

I just bought a mojo rod from St.Croix, about 4 weeks ago. I contacted them by email and called the day it was delivered. The tip is set way out of line with the other eyelets. I contacted them 3 more times afterwards and received no answer back( with pics and all). I guess since your from Salt Strong you get treated differently. Their customer service isn’t that great. It’s a nice looking rod though. So if your buying a rod from them, good luck.
