I was informed that my mum was in here around 1985. I was 5 year old then but from what told and remember my birth father sent her nuts the bastard. Kathy Melaney i think at time. Excuse my spelling

Yeah the nurse you can see paints a more detailed description and of course she would know first hand being a nurse and you of course also being a patient. They were shut down for very good reasons because they did more harm than good.

Many story's from those that worked there paint a very nice picture but sadly my mother was in there for nervous breakdown and she was fed drugs that kept her sedated as well as electric shock treatment , put in padded cell , ill treated many times by staff , What went on in St Johns would never be allowed today , i really wish someone who worked in there at the time would open up and tell the truth how it really like for inmates . It was more like a prison for some than an hospital . Some Inmates where allowed out in the community but walked around in a daze .

hmmmm, interesting but the stuff about escaping and one three course meals fortnight is very misrepresentative if we're talking about the 70's and onwards. The patients where fed very well as the staff often used to eat the same food on the wards in our breaks. I worked there as a mental nurse from 1973 until 1976 and it was a mental hospital and not an "Asylum" ;-)

i would like to add that many of the elderly patients at St Johns in my time there in the 70's where old ladies and women with dementia or alzhiemers ;-) today they would be in an old peoples home. Iwonder if there's any photos of the buildings in the 70's when it was very impressive and well taken care of ;-) and I would love hear from any old employees from the 70's :-) espicially Kitty ...?smith and Martin my old bass player in my first band. We started backing pantomine music for the staff at St Johns. To this day I can still remember the great sausages and beans (not human beans) that we (and the patients) often ate for breakfast

Hi there, my name is Ashley Wilks. My production company and I made this documentary. I'm glad you like it! We're currently in the process of uploading our recent work to RU-vid, Vimeo and our website - You will be able to see other work we've produced when it's all uploaded. Take care, Ashley.

what I mean is it was'nt an .. "Asylum" in the 70's and until closed,. although I'm sure it may well have been in Victorian times. I trained as a mental nurse in mental health care and also medical procedures as any other nurse in a general hospital as we often had to take care of our phyiscally sick patients and accidents etc ourselves. Of course there was quite a high percentage of acute phsycotic and schizophrenic patients, (not all locked up as represented on the video, many patients would walk freely around the grounds or the village or go into the city of Lincoln)) , but also many where those who came and went after a short stay of weeks to some months suffering with depression, anxiety, alcoholism, drug abuse etc and the usual traumas of life. even phsycopaths and criminally insane...killers ! What I would have likes to see on the video was the time frame that the elderly lady worked there explained which must have been well before 1950

Met many a drunken Nurse & Doctor in the St Johns Social Club on a Friday night. I did the DJing for about a year mid 80s. Anyone remember those two (man & woman) Think a married couple at the time who would only dance to Rod Stewart's HOT LEGS & strut there stuff in a dance routine both were nurses at St Johns? Most of my family worked there from the early 70s until closure

Great Video Ashley. I was a patient in that place for almost 3 yrs. from July 1968. They were still doing lobotomy's at the time I left. I knew 3 of them. All 3 died as a result. I would love a copy of this if that's ok? I am willing to speak with you if you want to further your research.

Ray Cooke hi Ray! Was just enquiring if you would like to take part in a student documentary film very soon. We are telling the story of how people were treated in these mental hospitals & comparing them to today's treatment methods. We're also looking at prisons, specifically Lincoln castle & its history. Please contact me if you are interested in being part of our film. Robyn.

Interesting video. I now live in the Cathedral Heights building, which I am led to believe was part of the estate of the old hospital. Do you have any information on this part or be able to direct me to anywhere I could find some please?
