Lets talk about washboard, what causes it, how you can help prevent it, and a tool in new Cat Motor Graders called stable blade. Stable Blade is an anti washboard feature that when used helps an operator to prevent creating washboard with the blade of the machine.

This old operator shared with me when he noticed washboard really exploding as a problem was after Posi-traction or Limited Slip Differentials became a standard feature on vehicles. Vehicles were able to keep up speeds in areas where in the past they would be forced to slow down.

I have a section that goes from 60mph asphalt to gravel and I could re-blade it every day. Nothing will help because no one slows down, so I just knock the tops off. Funny story... I didn't know what stable blade was and for the life of me couldn't figure out why the machine's cruise kept slowing down. Figured it was glitchy. We don't spend alot of time training guys. Finally asked the Cat guy and he said it was a feature.... Ahhh... nice. Another way to keep bounce out without the computer is to offset the rears and of course to have plenty of angle in the mole board. Love you're work. Thanks much.

@ironman3406 2 месяца назад
Thanks for watching - and yes you are 100% correct introducing some articulation or blade angle will help reduce bounce, also wheel lean can help too. Lots of things to change the geometry of the machine. That’s the case for most people who get a new Cat grader, they haven’t been shown how stable works or what it does and it makes a lot of people mad because they don’t know what’s happening with their machine and then get frustrated and just turn the feature off instead of using it how it’s intended to be used. Thanks again for watching.

I remember when I was younger in the 80s the county grader guy would use the ripper or scar fire whatever it is called lol and cut out the wash boards and potholes then grade it smooth and it would last a while before they came back now days the guys barely know how to use a machine lol they love grading the dirt out of the ditch and putting it on the road lol thanks for sharing buddy wish we had somebody like you around here doing roads I understand it’s the traffic causing the wash boards I heard the guys say what you said to people need to slow down and not cram the breaks at stops lol
@ironman3406
@ironman3406 Год назад
Hey Scrotie thanks for watching. Scarifying or ripping are good options to get to the bottom and start blending things back for sure. Pulling shoulders is a important part of road maintenance too, traffic tends to push the roads out, we drive to fast and we put to heavy of loads on our gravel road infrastructure and it pushes the material out, so they have to pull the shoulders up to recover both gravel and the clay binders to resurface to road and bring it back to its proper shape. You’re not wrong experienced equipment operators are getting hard to come by, we need to encourage more young people coming into the work force that there is nothing wrong with blue collar type work. They have more options than just university.

@wemedeeres4105
@wemedeeres4105 Год назад
I completely agree with speed of traffic being the biggest part of washboarding as well as needing moisture when correcting it and getting it packed in good. Have you looked into Sharq cutting edges? I swithed about 5 years ago and will never go back to standard blades. I can change out blades in about 10 minutes. I run the regular flat blades in the winter for snow removal and the swith to the more agressive "cheese grater" looking ones for summer use, they do a much better job cutting out washboard and also leave a nicer finish pass.
@ironman3406
@ironman3406 Год назад
Hey there thanks for watching, I have never used the sharq edges. I know a few guys that use them and like them. I typically prefer DH2 steel blades for any kind of cutting, and carbides for normal maintenance. Actually really like the Cat Grader Bit 2 system for carbides, pricy to get into but they last forever so you make up for the initial costs of them. Thanks again for watching sir.
@wemedeeres4105
@wemedeeres4105 Год назад
@@ironman3406 I agree the carbide bits are pricy and the cost benefit just wasn't there for my application as I do more snow removal with my machine than summer road maintenance and the main reason for that is we went to using calcium chloride for dust suppression which also cuts down on the need for summer grading.

Could i make a content suggestion? A blade angle series for dummies. We wont all get the opportunity to drive a flash new grader with electronic this and that. But the how and why of blade angle remains the same whether its a new grader or a 50s gallion or even a blade behind your tractor. Tips and tweaks for hard or soft incorporate or spread and which way to tweak if its not cutting right would make for a great series.

After growing up on washboards, I'm surprised to hear that anything can be done other than scratching off the tops after a rain. So if a few quick passes last for 3 cars, how long would a proper cut and pack fix last?
@ironman3406
@ironman3406 Год назад
It’ll last a lot longer if the damage is cut out to the bottom and laid back over smooth, and traffic can help make it last longer by slowing down. All the factors play a part in how long the repair will last.

What is the purpose of a windrow left on the side of the road?
@ironman3406
@ironman3406 3 месяца назад
Thanks for watching - there can be a couple reasons for leaving a windrow on the side. One is that if an operator has just recently pulled the shoulders up, there is often lots of vegetation that comes with it so they will leave the windrow alone to allow the vegetation to dry out before blading it across the road. The other is that some operators leave what they call a maintenance windrow on the side. This is so that they have a windrow of material to start with to blade across the road surface. I am personally not a fan of this as they hold water. Hope that answers your question. Thanks again for watching

What is blade cushion ? And what is it for
@ironman3406
@ironman3406 2 месяца назад
It’s kind of like ride control for the blade, there are a pair of accumulators plumber into the blade lift circuit. When the machine encounters things like large rocks in the surface of the road, the accumulators allow the blade life cylinders to ride up over the rock, instead of leaving all the down pressure in the cylinders to catch on the rock. I hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching.

I’ve been a blade operator for well longer or so long I’d need to do math day after holiday weekend so math not happening I’ve been chosen to train morons how to wrap their non operator brains I mean you got people who shouldn’t be allowed around a machine little lone in it running but I’m gotten old and I can’t be the super operator I’ve always been just kidding I have gotten old and I m not as spry as I was So my bosses I have a bunch figured I need apprentice but most people aren’t any type of operator come to find out In my blade experience before my fancy pants 16Gs bells and whistles when getting under wash board I could see at the back of the cutting edge the wash board coming thru the way I set up blade is for cutting edge to be perpendicular to road (90 degrees) you wouldn’t believe how many people have know idea what perpendicular means. Where I’m blading in rock quarries the washboards are a lot larger both in depth and distance apart to peaks what my point of this is in my opinion it’s better to learn the manual way before you go to automatic way all the new machine bells and whistles are nice features but BUT how do you run the machine when your bells and whistles aren’t working right or at all I’ve had one apprentice go home cause GPS was down and he couldn’t cut grade or he didn’t have the experience or no how to not be digital what I’m saying is it better to learn a manual skill and perfect it than have no clue and depend on grade control to get by sorry I rambled just had knee replacement s so I’m RU-vid surfing my wife thinks I’m nuts watching machine operation videos …..maybe….. but it’s what I do BE SAFE big Jon
@ironman3406
@ironman3406 Год назад
Thanks for watching Jon, I’ve heard what you’ve said from a great many operators. However the challenge our industry faces sooner than later is that guys like you won’t be around forever. Young people are drawn into technology and it’s how we will draw in the next generation of operators. I learned the old school way too, but the industry needs to change how we look at technology. We need to start using it as a tool to get people interested in becoming an operator, use the ease of use tools to get them up to speed faster so they can be productive sooner. Then it’s our responsibility as veterans in the industry to teach them how to do it should and when the tech goes down. We have this mind set that you can’t be an operator if you use tech, and we criticize new and upcoming operators for using it. That mind set isn’t helping our industry grow, it’s going to keep steering people away from it. We have the power in our hands to inspire the next generation of equipment operators. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

100% correct my man , the new gen morons privileged at that have no concept of how a base machine works without all the mod cons, if you find one worthy teach hard from scratch , if they can cut it ( no pun intended) then & only then allow the modern technology to be introduced , the old way is best to learn .

Hi thanks for watching and for a great question. This feature is 4/5 years old, but not all models will have it it’s an option that can be ordered. The easiest way you will know it has it, is to pop into the screen, go into the settings menu and if it has Stable Blade or should be the second line down. If you can’t find it anywhere in the settings menu the machine won’t have the feature. Thanks again hope this answers your question.
