Thank you for taking me on a trip I'll never make. The small square holes [light boxes] were for illuminating the magazines, originally lit with candle lanterns. There would have a thick sheet of glass protected by a brass/bronze mesh inside the magazine to keep the flame right away from the gunpowder. Access, to attend to the lanterns, could be safely gained from outside the magazine, often in a special ‘lighting passage’. The "chains" at 29:46 are part of the supports for rope mantlets, these were heavy ropes woven into mats which were hung around the embrasure; this was to prevent splinters/rivets from the armour when hit by an enemy shell entering the casemate & injuring the gun crew. The ring on the back of the cannon is a cascabel through which a rope can be passed. The guns were origionally fired with a friction tube, a gunpowder filled, T shaped copper tube with a friction compound at the top with a roughened piece of metal passing through it. To operate, insert tube into breech of gun, attach the firing lanyard to the ring on the end of the friction bar,, stand well back, pull the lanyard.
Wow Matt, you do take us to some of the most remarkable places. Fantastic walk about floor by floor every nook n cranny, makes you wonder what living conditions would be like. Thank you and the others for a brilliant explore. 🇬🇧🛸👍👍👍👍
Excellent footage again Matt and amazing drone footage and the music you add . Everything is just so well done really enjoy all your vids even the ones where you have a rant to clear your min . Carry on the excellent work Sir x
Wow you take us too amazing places and the knowledge you have makes it even more intriguing. How things built back then survive but buildings these days last a few years and they didnt have technology as now. Love watching you guys. The great adventurer never fails to amaze me.
Missed a live version of Fort Dew Droppins So Sad had to work in the Rain fun to watch indoors!!!; ) Hi Matt ,Sam and Ninja Jess!!!; ) Matt watched Sam and Jess a good video as well Amazing the amount of Rust those Cannons have gone through the whole still pretty sound for as old as it is you Folk's know Ian's probably Drolling watching this all those Gems left you all did a Thorough Explore for Sure Nice Drone footage Catching the Waves on the Roof!!!; )
Hi Matthew Eight minutes in the little seat you saw and the barrier each side is called a shifting lobby the idea was that beyond the barrier were the gunpowder stores so before you were allowed to enter you had to change into special clothing that was nonstatic had no buttons also your shoes were changed into slipper like shoes again to prevent any sparks from occurring in the powder magazines
This was an awesome explore; you Sir are an excellent "noticer." Fascinating how a site was reshaped and reused over the generations. On the turret floors, the little partitioned areas you thought might be shower areas; I agree. There seemed to be fireplaces every so often as well. Thinking in terms of ship's construction, you'd probably be stuck at your gun or station during active attack and not be able to go anywhere except below where those little rooms were when your relief came, if ever. Those apparent showers would then be a necessity due to all the smoke & dust, even if it was just cold seawater it would be better than nothing. I did love the field of wild geraniums everywhere; such a rich and cough, cough fertile environment. Well done you all.
Fascinating explore. This is really amazing bit of engineering over centuries and great history. On wikipedia it says "during World War I and by this time, only two 12-pounder QF guns remained" I guess those are the 2 cannons in the video, the last 2 that were left after ww1
What a place, Brilliant walk around lads & ladies. I wonder would the atmosphere change at night?? just a thought. Thanks a lot guys for the video, much appreciated 👍👍
Me again Matthew The three big guns in the fort are 10 inch 18 ton rifled muzzle loading guns in 1872 there was 16 of those and 7. 9inch 12 ton rifle muzzle loading guns The barrels of the gun haven’t fallen off they have been cut off in preparation to be taken off and scrapped as has happened to all the rest of them but those never quite managed the journey to the mainland.
Those seagulls remind me of the film The Birds... Yet these don't attack, but try to be noisy, and if not careful, you will be crapped on. Anyway, cool explore Matt.
35:48 The round bits on the side would've allowed the cannon to sit into a (probably wooden) cradle, and the hole on the back would've had a huge chain going though it and there would've been tether points on the walls or floor.
@1:21:30 ish the round things on the side are the mounts. The thing in the back probably unscrewed to open the breach. The barrels look to have been cut off with a gas cutting torch so as to decommission the guns.
i have no idea how you managed to record a sound so similar to my pc's liquid cooler with an air bubble in it but you did XD ... always wanted to visit a sea fort but we don't have any up north as far as i know
