Watched this while visiting my mum on the outskirts of Saldus. That tall structure in some of the shots looks a bit like the Broceni Cement factory. That field might not be too far off where I grew up. This place is littered with WW2 stuff even to this day. We had a stroll in a local forest with the kids yesterday and the eldest asked about a round shaped crater like hole near the path (about 4m diameter). "What's that hole in the ground, dad?" Me: "Not sure, we used to call them just 'bomb holes' or 'bunkers', loads of them there." Then my mum added: "They're actually both". My grandparents were small kids during WW2 but their memories are still surprisingly vivid about that time - they've told countless stories about their experiences in this area during those times. And given what they've recounted you'd actually be more surprised by not finding any military items digging up a random Kourland farm field than by finding a bunker in a sub-optimal position.
@karlflavell968
@karlflavell968 3 года назад
What's he on about at 19:53 "it looks to me like the top of the fuse and the spoon have come off". It's what's left of an M24 Stielhandgranate or what's commonly known as a stick grenade. There is no "spoon" on an M24. It's armed by unscrewing a metal cap at the end of the wooden handle which allows a porcelain ball on a string to drop down. Pull the ball/the string and that arms it with around a 4 1/2 second fuse. It's a friction igniter unlike the US Pineapple and British Mills36 (which worked on a percussion cap basis) and as the handle and igniter are missing that's got no chance of going off. You would think that they'd at least know a bit about WW2 weaponry if they're digging out a WW2 bunker. Especially explosives!

The Second Front was a hell I would wish in no one. The pictures and videos that there are give you the picture of what it was like. It was WW1 but with modern equipments and tanks. Miles and miles of trenches and bunkers that were batter day and night by gun, mortar, and artillery. Flamethrowers, CAS Bombers, Strat Bombers and machine gun. Now couple that with just how flat that terrain is, where you can see you enemy lined up for miles, Cou-led with the fear that forwards means death and backwards mean desertion and death. You had no where to go, risk getting caught and jailed. It was just brutal, warfare as warfare is.
@Addictedtobleeps
@Addictedtobleeps 2 года назад
Totally agree. When we were out there filming, we filmed a scene explaining that a particular trench, which was important for both the Germans and Russians - changed hands three times in one day. That may not seem much, but the violence in that situation would have been ridiculous. When the team we worked with excavated it, it was full of hand made knuckle dusters. So it was mostly hand to hand. Some of the stories out there were horrible. There was a forest in Latvia, which still had human teeth strewn on the surface. Literally bodies still everywhere out there. You are spot on. It was brutal.

My father having been a solidier, I grew up in Germany. I was first there at age 3, in 1949. We lived in Heuchelheim, across the Lahn River from Giessen. Giessen had been levelled, and there was stuff all over the place. You just had to be careful because much of it was still live. Left Germany with a lot of toys. Second tour was in Bad Hersfeld, near the border with East Germany. Found even more stuff, ie bayonets, and pieces of uniforms and unexploded ordnance. It was fairly common to have parts of WWII uniforms, patches, and so on. I even had a Nazi Eagle patch made of gold and silver thread. Final tour was in the Frankfurt area. Didn't find much, although there were still bombed out buildings in Frankfurt. Returned to the US for the final time, after graduating from Frankfurt American High School. About 20 or so years later, learned that as we all walked from one set of buildings to the other, we were walking over a 1000 pound unexploded aerial bomb that had been dropped by the Brits during the war. Felt really eerie.

My great grandfather was part of the wehrmarcht on the eastern front, unfortunetly when I got into ww2 (around the 3rd grade for me) he was barely able to talk he only said a couple sentences in german here and there, and was barely able to hear, I did hear stories like how him and his friend that were hiding in a barn, his friend lit a cigar, some Russians walked in saw the smoke and shot at them, some how he survived, apparently he also was shot 9 times and stabbed 5 times, I was also told by my mom he had maps from when he fought and he would show her where he was. I dont know where the maps are I only got his compass. But unfortunetly as of last year he has reunited with his wehrmarcht friends once again.

As i lived in France in the 60s Normandy all things of finds where normaly. Ammo, Weapons, Body Parts etc. No Rumors about that. A Neigbor had about a full dugged body in his garden and his remains left in the trash can and i could remember of half composed hands on top of the trash can . For us kids it was normal to play with Ammo, Handgrenades and stacks of Explosives and hand weapons, found on the fields. Heya - found dugged german ammo in cases and sold them to Tourists for small money. On the Beaches there where many sandstone embedded relics like Bones, Ammo etc. At this time you were able to go to the end of ebb about 3kms from the beach and found all of the remains nearly untouched 15-20 yrs ago. Landing Gear, swimming Tanks and unbelivibel mass of Human Remains from the Allied axies, all their equippment nearby. Death, Wepons, Skulls, Skeletons, Ammo, Explosives, Guns etc. That was a normal live here nearly Utah Beach as a child. Our Elderly never told us what happened here so this was our normal Playground!

According to my grandpa, they were in a fire mission when they had a blowby in one of the artillery pieces with a chemical round and it exploded in the tube. The gas cloud would have killed you if it touched or you inhaled it, so they hauled ass. They left the damaged piece and relocated their position due to attacks. They surrendered 4 days later. They didn't have time to go grab gear, it just gets in the way under the camouflage nets by getting snagged. They left in bunkers to move more quickly

The 218th Infantry served in the invasion of Poland as a reserve division for the 4th Army. Subsequently, it was moved to the west facing the Maginot line, which it attacked in May 1940 as part of the 7th Army. Following a period of occupation duty and also briefly a return to civilian life, its soldiers were sent to the Eastern Front in the winter of 1941. It remained on the Eastern Front until the end of the war, retreating with Army Group North back through the Baltic states, until the Army group was trapped in Courland. The 218th Infantry Division, still in Courland, surrendered to the Soviets on 8 May 1945.

So, the reason the finds are "as good as new" , as you said in the video is caused by the mug and constant high humidity in the terrain. It prevents the oxygen to get through the dirt ( let's explain it like that) and preserves everything as if it was new, corrosion doesn't happen without oxygen, as well as many other phenomen. Awersome video!

I was so happy to see u men fill the bunker back in to prevent the so called ‘black diggers’ from gaining access to the bunker. Even though the artifacts were collected for histories sake, I still get a pit in my stomach thinking about those so-and-so’s even touching the dirt in that bunker. I grew up in a military family with a grandfather who flew in the RAF (my mother’s dad) and a father who flew in the Army Air Corp B-17’s over Germany 1943 - 1945. My father was a Syrian immigrant who flew for the US and met my British mom while serving in England. When the time came I myself served in three conflicts, one with my brother, Vietnam, one with my wife, first Gulf War and, the last conflict with my wife and son in the Middle East, Afghanistan and Iraq. I can tell u that things sure did change between my first conflict and my last. But the real big changes were realized when I would sit and talk to my dad and grandad about WWII…wow things were so different. Well getting off track a bit so I just wanted to thank all of u for the work u do and continue to do. God speed and good luck to all of u.
