We all know the legendary Stairway To Heaven solo by Jimmy Page...
...But what if it was played by someone else like Peter Frampton, Eddie Van Halen or Eric Johnson played the Stairway To Heaven Solo? I brought in my friends Eric Johnson and Phil X to find out.

Great idea, Rick....All of you did masterful alternate rides. Any one of them could very well have been the solo that all local "Guitar Gods" (and their apprentices) would be trying to cover note-for-note, just like so many of us HAD to do with Page's solo from the very first time we heard the tune. And for good reason, as it turns out, given how popular the song quickly became & still is to this day. Only wish I had a dollar in my wallet for every time it has been requested of us at a gig.....I could build myself another Harley & have $$ left over. (Well, that may be a slight exaggeration...Better throw "Free Bird" in there, too. Scooter parts are not cheap) 🤔 But I know you get my point. I was actually getting a little burned out on the tune as a whole, and then saw Ann & Nancy Wilson do it with Bonham, Jr., & that incredible back-up ensemble....Wow. Anyway, Rick, an interesting presentation from you today, as usual. I am a dedicated fan & admirer of your work....Keep it comin' Buddy 👍😉😎🎸

Eric's tone is simply unmistakable: melodic, elegant, goosebump-inducing. You can always hear him out among hundreds of guitarists and he doesn't even have to follow the maxim of many guitar heroes, which often follows the motto: faster, shriller, more spectacular. For me it's definitely the best of the three solos.

Freebird would be perfect, you could get three people doing it at the same time. Sweet idea. Same with Hotel, split screen guitar dual. Since Rick says Garcia stuff is off limits because of the estate he should take this opportunity to reach out to the dozen or more Garcia specialists like John Kadlecik, Jeff Mattson, or Stu Allen and give Jerry some love on the Beato channel. They couldn't block that.

The most loved, the most played, the most envied, the most over-played, the most hated at times because of over-saturation, and despite all the noise, parody, spite, and adoration, the most amazing thing to simply listen to. The comments like “none of these can touch the original,” etc. are valid but they miss the point. The point is to show how improvisation of style, technique and tone locked into the harmonic and melodic structure of a generational classic is simply FUN AF. IMHO, anyways. Think of It as “Variations on a Theme of Page.” And ... if there is a rock revival in our future, music historians will surely point to Professor Beato as a key factor in its resurgence.

Yeah, Rick actually sounded like he was part of the band. He wove his notes into everybody else’s work in the song very seamlessly and very credibly. The EVH solo was great too. Hit me right in the feels considering. Eric Johnson solo was gorgeous, virtuosic an impressive which is what you would expect from the man. But, it did not fit. It didn’t go together.
@vmax4steve524
@vmax4steve524 3 года назад
@@Xochiyolotl Nail on the head right there, modern players have exorcised the melody and the structure of the song out of soloing. Rick's solo had the essence of the original all over it as it's in the subconscious of every rock guitarist, the others went their own way, and theirs, as you say, didn't fit. To be honest I think any of Eddie Van Halen's solos could be cut and pasted into all his other songs and no one would notice.

I'm still amazed at how well each of the solos captured each guitarist's original sound. Of course, you know Eric Johnson's solo was going to do that -- it's Eric Johnson playing, LOL. But the way Rick captured Frampton and the way Phil X captured Van Halen were both just spectacular! This is easily one of my favorite of Rick's videos.

He did an absolutely beautiful job. On that note, I listened to each multiple times. Not one was better than the other in my opinion. I closed my eyes and imagined the original did not exist. Then imagined each musician in their own play style and sound. What is truly amazing is Rick and Phil were playing for someone else. Do you realize the hrs. spent in just listening to Frampton and Van Halen to grasp that feel not to mention the tone. Again, absolutely beautiful.

What a unique and incredibly well-executed. As a guitarist since 1965, I tend to prefer the "classic" style - the original is so well-suited to the song, I can't believe I preferred the solo (don't hate me, anyone) of a guitarist I have long considered very good, but too flashy for my taste - Eddie Van Halen! The rendition of the way he WOULD have played it was supernaturally good, and the solo fit so well (with the tapping and raspy slides, etc.), I was stunned. Now I find myself confused, in multiple ways. It did - in spite of how good all of you were, and what a challenge this was, help me re-appreciate how incredibly good Jimmy Page was in this song. His solo was really a stairway to heaven itself, the way he nuanced it to greater and greater force and speed - and if you listen very hard (pun intended), time seems to just suspend itself during his solo. His use of dynamics, rhythmic expression, and sheer, melodic beauty, were literally made for this song, as though catching whispers from heaven as guidance upward. He was ahead of his time on the guitar, and very, very powerful. We have to remember the era in which the original was played, because each generation of players stands on the shoulders of the previous ones. For the style he played in that solo, he wasn't standing on that many shoulders - but man, his were big! I hope you do this again - what a tremendous way to re-appreciate the original, and imagine other possibilities. Thank you so much. I forgot to say that the apparent ease with which you re-created the backing for the solo was astounding. Just truly amazing. Kudos to all who participated. I listen very closely, and to my ear, this may just as well have been the original backing.

I've got a pretty good sense of the kind of things he likes to do, but he also does things that really serve the song. That EVH impersonation was pretty spot on although I was expecting a lot more whammy bar. Eric Johnson is always amazing but I felt like he overplayed a bit. Playing on top of that intro thing made it less impactful once the groove hit, and playing over the slide parts sounded messy to me. Honestly, in terms of melodic flow and playing 'with' the track and not just on top of it, I like Rick's "Frampton" solo the best. But that's just, like, my opinion, man.

Eric took time to start impressing, and frustrating in moments when he wouldn't rest for a second to let the song's flourishes shine through. But I can't blame him. Everyone else had to strategize how to play their part - all he had to do was be himself. I would expect the other two to sound more completely realized. Rick's Frampton just blew my mind right out my ass. I'm sure he's very modest about it but this guy can play.
