I was there. In 78, I followed Getz at each and every set he played at the Grande Parade du Jazz in Nice. Great rendition of "My Blue Heaven", soulful playing by all of these marvelous musicians.
As he started playing bassoon with double lip embouchure, lip tighter nearer the tip and used quite hard reeds and a close mouthpiece aperture of around 5*, his control and tone , especially in middle to upper register produced a unique, more classical tone , very similar to Paul Desmond , cool sound with little vibrato.
Stan Getz and Mary Lou Williams. "My Blue Heaven" (Walter Donaldson, lyrics by George A. Whiting - 1924) and "Lush Life" (Billy Strayhorn). - La Grande Parade du Jazz, 1978. J.C. Heard, drums and Ronnie Boykins, bass. - I've heard Zoot sound like Stan, but "Heaven" is the first time I've heard Getz sound like Sims.
