+comanchio1976 No, Hardy was born in the US and they ended up meeting in Hollywood when by accident they were placed in the same film. Their talents clearly placed them above the level of their fellow actors and they began to play larger roles till they became the stars. There was no "planned" Laurel and Hardy, they just happened as time went on and people swarmed to see their films.

They say it because Stan was the comic genius behind the two. Oliver showed up and did what Stan wanted, but they were good friends. On the screen, they are equals. But saying they were equals elsewhere is like saying McCartney and Ringo were equals.

They were a team. If there hadn't been a Stan, there wouldn't have been an Ollie and vice versa. They each brought something to the act, something that couldn't be done without. If only we had talent like that nowadays.

Hollywood is so full of itself it is amazing that he even got this award. When he was ill he hardly had any visitors-even though he was listed in the phone book.

is it not with a fear of impending doom, that actors find they have been given a 'lifetime achievement' award?. for all that they achieved in their prime, they were consistently ignored. So that when they are actually given an award, it's just out of sympathy, or because they are still alive!

I think also lots that know who they are and they love them i know quite a few young ones that watch L&H and other comics from that period.

I'm a 70s child and grew up with Stan and Laurel on Saturday TV. Adored them, never forgotten them. Charisma, talented and fore-runners of comedy today (and always will be), who are both funny, and true professionals on stage and cinema. They have both provided - and will continue - humour and entertainment in many guises during times of The Great Depression and through World War II for 24 years. A truly remarkable feat. I have shown my child of age 11 lots of Laurel and Hardy features and she adores them. Keep the torch going I say. We need some cinemas around UK to show these old movies of L&H, Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin and a host of others I've not mentioned, to keep their spirits alive. Other late comers in the comedy genre include my personal favourites of Abbott and Costella , Danny Kaye, Robin Williams (RIP) and many others who carry the comedy performance on TV and movies. They keep us happy, make us feel good and forget our troubles - just for that moment - and gives us hope. A beautiful speech by Danny Kaye.

I'm only 26 and I wasn't even a twinkle in my fathers eye when these comedic geniuses reigned, but I am truly grateful to have been raised up by old school parents and therefore exposed to all of these wonderful talented men. I was totally born in the wrong generation!

Stan would have dedicated the Oscar to Babe Hardy. For the rest of his life, Stan referred to the award as "our" never "mine". Nobody was more aware of Laurel and Hardy as a team, than Stan.

Imagine if they’d given them both the awards they deserved when both were still alive. How wonderful it would’ve been to see them on the stage with their awards, accepting them together.

Kind of like the Three Stooges. By the the time they got their star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, Moe, Larry, Curly & Shemp were already dead. For shame, Hollywood.

Let's be perfectly honest here. They never had. Now fair enough they have some integrity and haven't devolved into some popularity contest where people can vote for their favorite by phone, but the Academy rarely rewarded the true pioneers and those who broke new ground. None of those mattered until they were signed by some huge studio and had that "perfect role" assigned to them.

Their movie The Music Box was awarded one.

So in fact he wasn't a straight man. No Laurel and Hardy fans that I know of have ever thought of him that way.

When Stan was offered a bit in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, he said he would never appear in a film without Babe, who had died six years earlier. 🥲

There is no ego in my reply. I related a simple true experience. I am a fan of the older Hollywood. I never watch the modern-day rubbish. It is not an expression of ego so much as a proclamation of disappointment.

Fair enough. I am very old fashioned. I remember Fay wary telling a TV show host that in her heyday, the 30s and 40s, people wanted thought stimulating material in the movies, while today (at the time the 70s) people wanted physical stimulations such as sex, blood, violence, etc. Believe me, it just isn't possible for Hollywood to make a good movie out of my book because it was written to avoid the sort of things that Hollywood is infected with; such as sex, gory violence, profanity, etc. Any Hollywood production of my book would be perverted by the industry - I am sure of it. Hollywood just does not have the decency to make a good movie out of my book. You see, it concerns a group of explorers in 1899 becoming trapped in a legendary Bulgarian castle concealed in a gorge, only to find they can't get out, and that it is a favorite spot for the devil to make his way into the world before inaugurating a new evil scheme. It is heavy on dialogue and that certain element of mystery and discovery. There is also about a dozen poetic passages. The book takes the event of several people being trapped in that castle and engaging in a battle of wits to save themselves. No one today wants what could be called an intellectual exercise on such a subject. Hollywood would certainly add sex, profanity and a lot of blood and gore and computer generated graphics. There are scenes that could be called "action" scenes, but Hollywood just can't produce them in good taste anymore. It is an unfortunate truth that America is a lot less gracious as we use to be.

Agreed, Hollywood has lost the romance and true meaning of entertainment. It appears to be more tinsel than talent. And God bless Stan Laurel, he made me laugh, he made me cry, but most of all he made me laugh until I cried.

Danny Kaye was my childhood hero in the 1960’s, I loved all his films. He was a natural children’s entertainer.

Heard Mr Kaye was anything but nice. So many stories of how he was not nice to the public. I know someone who said they saw him at Disneyland and he said "get all these kids out of here"

I think Danny was great too - but never made me laugh. (not being a fan of slapstick). But whenever I see him now, he reminds me that he and Laurence Olivier had a fairly long term affair. There are some things about famous people better left private - and here I am - being unkind in mentioning something that I didn't want to know......Sorry to those who didn't know. It just was such a disappointment.
