A video preview of a jazz DVD documentary featuring jazz bop pioneer drummer Stan Levey. Stan Levey takes you on a musical journey from the birth of bebop, through the Big Band jazz era, to the "west coast, cool school" of modern jazz music.
Stan Levey, one of the premiere storytellers in Ken Burns' "Jazz" documentary, tells fascinating tales of his days with the famed Parker/Gillespie group on 52nd Street in New York and his being the driving force of the Stan Kenton Orchestra and Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars. The commentaries are told along with music, film clips and photographs of many jazz greats captured by world famous photographers William Claxton and Herman Leonard, and include many never before seen photographs from Stan's own personal collection.
Also included are special appearances from Stan's friends and colleagues: Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Charlie Watts, Quincy Jones, Hank Jones, Bill Holman, Lee Konitz, Howard Rumsey, Terry Gibbs, Bill Henderson, Lalo Schifrin, and many more, including some very special observations from Charlie "Bird" Parker himself. Produced by Stan Levey and Arthur Shelby Pritz. Directed by Arthur Shelby Pritz. All of our RU-vid videos are strictly non-profit and we do not receive any payments from RU-vid.

Tremendous player. As a left handed drummer, it's great to see such an accomplished lefty player. There aren't many.

A pioneer and a very original drummer in early days of bebop. He could play incredible fast and never made any mistake. One of the unsung heroes of Jazz, a smart guy and a GREAT Drummer, god bless him.

Stan was of these overachieiving types. He succeeded at just about everything he attempted. Stan was a tremendous fighter, as he once trained to be a heavyweight. He took "0" shit off anyone. And no one dared fuck with him. He was also an amazing photographer as well. He retired from the music business in the early 1970s to dedicate his full time to photography.

Well I watched this preview again... I have the DVD and it's absolutely a MUST !! My God, his feel was amazing ! What a legend... Buddy Rich once announced him as the greatest drummer in the world at a club in Hollywood in the late 50's....! Stan could play the fastest 'swing' time of any drummer alive!!

@@angelalevey9981 A true giant of modern jazz. He should never be forgotten or omitted when the history is discussed or written. I don't mean to detract from other more celebrated names, but he was as great, and his contribution as profound, as any drummer whose name you could mention. Any. And I, personally, prefer him to almost all.

Stan swung so hard with such soft hands. Reminds me a bit of Frankie Dunlop. Soft.

in the documentary, stan tells about a concert he played at with krupa and his group, stan and his group, i believe there was shelley and his group and buddy and his quartet. for a finale they had a drum battle , they all had a turn and stan said buddy came on last and made them all look like children. what a concert that must have been.

Wow. I am totally KNOCKED OUT. I've been aware of Stan and heard his name associated with Bird and Dizzy, but I never saw him play until now. I AM A HUGE FAN NOW. My God. What hands! What time! I gotta see more of this...Wish I could have studied with Stan and got educated by a True Giant among Jazz drummers. Thank God for RU-vid. Seeing is believing!

In the 1950's I was in high school and used to go to the Lighthouse on Sundays to hear Stan Levy. Even when playing quietly he was a powerful drummer. I met him in the 70's, he was the photographer at a gig I was playing. He was a very kind man and I was still in awe of him.

What they don't tell you here is that Stan Levey had been a very capable heavyweight boxer before becoming a drummer - he certainly looks the part - he was built like "a brick shithouse." Plays great drums on "For Musicians Only" with Gillespie, Getz, Stitt, Lewis, Brown.

Yeah, and I pretty much knew Louise wasn't doing so well back then. Too bad. Of the real giant jazz drummers of the 40's and 50's , it would seem now that Roy Haynes is the last of that kind.

Miles complementing a white drummer?
@rayjr62
@rayjr62 7 лет назад
Miles complimented a ton of white musicians. The regard he held for someone like Gil Evans was enormous. If you were a great player / arranger / composer you had Miles' respect.
