If you're not standing all the way up under load, you may need to work on a super simple, effective exercise that builds a rock solid foundation for all your other athletic development.
Work on this from the comfort of your own home. You don't need an expensive barbell and plates. Kettlebells work great in small spaces, and are much more affordable.

I bought a set of 125's, 150's, 175's and 200's from New York Barbell. They are the TDS wide handled Kettlebell. This was like 2010, when they were affordable. Now a wide handle 150 is like $350 and they cannot get them cheaply made in China so New York Barbell has a limited supply. One thing about double KB deadlifts is you can do deficit deadlifts with less restrictions as the KB handles are neutral grip like a trap bar. 1

I have typically never done any deadlift exercises because I injured my lumbar, and it has taken years to get where I am now. I do a bunch of core exercises that do not involve bending, but I will give these a try, as I can use light weight, and control my movement better.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the channel, I’ve gotten so much out of it, I can’t even begin to describe it… but just once in a while I’d love if Mark said “sitting down for long periods of time is a fundamental human movement, and you should be very good at it”. then I would think, “well, Mark, I am very good at it, I’ve been in training for years!” It took so much time,application and determination (to not die of boredom mainly) to learn to ‘endurance desk’ the way I do…

Good stuff Mark! The thumbnail looked like you were doing some loaded carries with the bells. Now I'm curious, what do you think about suitcase carries, rack carries, overhead carries, bottoms up carries, sandbag carries, etc. Just loaded carries in general?
@brawndothethirstmutilator9848
Coach Dan John has a whole philosophy and numerous programs built around loaded carries.
@clintengle7412
@clintengle7412 Год назад
@brawndothethirstmutilator9848 I appreciate the response! I do follow Dan John and he is the one who first got me interested in loaded carries. I really do appreciate Dan's work and information...but I'm not an Olympic lifter so some of Dan's work doesn't apply to what I do consistently. Another Dan John idea that I really like is his standing, loaded bird dog. Are you familiar with Aleks Salkin? I was introduced to Aleks by Dan John and Pat Flynn. Aleks has several challenges that are focused on loaded carries (using kettlebells) and loaded gait pattern movements (crawling, marching, carrying & dragging). If you like that kind of stuff check out Aleks too. Mark has done videos on basically all of these ideas. He's talked about a crawl, he's covered walking with a mace and I think a trap bar (loaded carry), he's talked about pulling and dragging a sled, he talked about rucking (which is basically a form of loaded marching). I would still be interested in hearing his thoughts on kettlebell and/or sandbag carries specifically. Single vs double, mixed weight carries, mixed level carries (ex. Suitcase carry left hand, rack carry right hand), bear hug carries, shoulder carries...stuff like that. BTW...Idiocracy wasn't just a movie, it was a prophecy.

The key reason why I wanna master this exercise is not to look aesthetic, I wanna be able to haul bags of groceries in my 60s/70s without much of a struggle. I'm already doing sets of 5 with a pair of 16KGs and plan to advance to a 16KG/20KG load in a few months.

Hey Mark what are your thoughts about the staggered one arm kettlebell deadlift?
@jasonwelsh417
@jasonwelsh417 Год назад
I was surprised to feel the rear delts, lats, and surrounding area work much harder with just double 36kg bells for high rep deads than a double body weight bar dead.

Would it be suitable/good to do the double suitcase deadlift/carry using two SLIGHTLY different sized bells? Like a 35 and a 25, but to be sure to alternate the heavy side?

Your grip will be the limiting factor, so you are not lifting all that much weight in comparison to a barbell deadlift. I recognize it is still activating muscles, but is this really effective in comparison to a barbell deadlift?
@MarkWildman
@MarkWildman 7 месяцев назад
This is not meant to be a replacement for barbell dead lift, kettle bells, fill a roll of strength and endurance for most people. And movement patterns that can be activated that cannot be activated with a barbell dead lift.. The goal is to use barbell for what barbells are good and kettle bells for what kettle bells are good at in clubs in Mays for what clubs in Mace are good at
@jonaski08

Nobody needs to spend that much on barbells 😂! Unless you're going over 300 lbs, s cheap set from Academy or Walmart for $350 will do just fine. For deadlifts, a set of adjustable dumbbells are like $30-50 and give you a ton of flexibility.
