First meal looked awful; mash probably made from granules - far too heavy looking and the gravy looked like it was beer slops thickened with a little cornflour; second meal far better looking even if it was more expensive.
"The heaviest mash I've ever eaten." Proof positive that you've never had my cousin's home made mashed potatoes. Bless her, but her mash is so dense I am surprised it doesn't collapse in on itself and form a little black hole right there on the table.
I preferred the award winning pie. The mash looked creamy, great peas, and a pie filled to the top with succulent steak. Not to forget the thick luscious gravy. You need to revisit. Well worth the money. Good job😊
The award winning pie looked a lot nicer and not much more expensive as the first meal which looked a bit processed to me,the mash could have done with butter and cream in! The gravy looked like Oxo and water. The second meal you had won hands down for sure! Go back and try different pies. Good vlog!
The award winning pie and mash wins hands down.....the gravy in standard pub was like dish water... Love gravy to be thick.... The pie and mash looked so much better in award winning one 🙂🙂🙂
definitely the award winner. I decided that just from the fantastic glossy sheen from the gravy when we first saw it. it looked delicious. the first place with the -birdseye- microwavable veg, the mash you would be stunned by if it hit your head and the flavoured water -lets' not call it gravy!- had me thinking it was comparable with something I could knock up at home for less than £8. Award winning definite winner this time round. definitely try their other pies!
Pie Minister, in oparticular that Moo pie are fantastic. Had to laugh on the first review though, when you said I think everyone's got a bag of this in their freezer... we have haha ^_^
The gravy with the standard meal is how gravy is supposed to be, made using the juices of meat / vegetables, so generally its thin and not thick like those instant gravy granules mixes. The mash and veg looked very bog standard on the standard pie meal but the pie looked good. However I prefer the award winning pie meal overall.
I’m guessing it wasn’t made with the meat juices. And sorry my nans gravy(like many) was made with juices from roasts left in the pan and aways had some thickener (flour) added and mixed in to thicken it for pouring. It wasn’t liquid that you could drink from a cup.
On the first one only the pie looked decent. The frozen veggies looked underwhelming and I’m not convinced the potatoes in these places are not powdered and remade with some milk and butter added.
The first meal. I prefer chips over mash any day... the farmhouse mixed veg, you were bang on, we all have them at home in the freezer (nothing wrong with that), but I would prefer fresh. The pie looked bang on; like you, I wasn't expecting the gravy to look like witch piss; I'm from Yorkshire, and a thick gravy can save many a meal; worst gravy I have seen... looks like dishwater from the sink. Second Meal, everything looked perfect. I love the idea of caramelized red onions; the buttery mash looked tasty. I would have voted for this just for the gravy... Pie, mash, mushy peas pie, and gravy combo, a taste of heaven. A proper stodgy meal. Great review mate.
Traditionally pies always had short crust pastry, but in recent years it has become fashionably to use flaky pastry for the lid. I'm surprised you were not aware of that.
I'd have no problem ordering either one, great review. Since you're reviewing pie and mash, how about bangers and mash next? PS If you're ever in the beautiful medieval city of York, pop into the Royal Oak pub. They have an excellent steak and ale pie with peas and mash.
Sauce? Yes. Gravy? Not by my definition. Actually all looks great. Neither really looks better to me. I trust you on the flavor. The one thing that doesn't look great to me is the frozen vegetables at the inexpensive place. I'd have eaten them, but they didn't look exciting. I don't mind a very thin sauce if it's flavorful.
nice review m8 what id love to see after this is get one of the pieminister pies from a supermarket and compare that with what you had in their restaurant I won't say what I found but let's see what you think as they say over to you in the studio I hope you can find time
The first one looked like a soup ! Surely it was a kitchen error. I would have asked for some more butter to put in the mash and onto the veg. Pie looked nice and tasty. I still prefer the second , I think the extra cost justifies the quality.
Both meals have a good presentation on the plate. The second one looks like it would taste better. I don't know if that was colored water or what. But it didn't look like gravy. Thank you for sharing with us.
Both dishes are exactly the same just at different quality levels. Any large national chain don't make things in house. They're all done at a central location and reheated at the site. Source: worked in fine dining and large national chains at management level for 16 years
I hate and never use nor eat frozen veg. That was weird looking mash...it looked more like a large dumpling! Don't get me on the gravy. The pie looked nice. I would enjoy the second meal for certain. It looked perfect.
That first place had a nerve charging £10 for that rubbish watery gravy and frozen mixed veg. I'd have asked for a refund! We have Pieminster pies in the supermarket down here, they are expensive but I will try one next time as it all looked delicious. I'm having a Morrison's Steak Pie with dumpling top for tea! In the oven now. 😅
Was that Gravy? or Water? you put on your mash. I'd of complained about that . Plus the second one looked really nice . But if I order Steak and ale pie I expect steak and ale pie Not with Carrots If your allergic to some foods this could be dangerous They need to list what else is in the pie so you have the choice
Nice work but I firmly believe that you eat with your eyes then your nose for you put anything in your mouth with the award-winning pie I’m thinking it was probably fried onions that they had over the top of it, but it certainly reminded me of something that was not fried onions and then to difference of this being a food channel I won’t say what it reminded me of.. I could just never eat a meal looking like that.. getting past that back in the day, I went to school in London Fulham.. we had a great local pie and mash on Lilly Road… in the classic style. Keep up the good work invest in a small stand for your iPhone so you can drop that shoulder look when doing your presentations it will look better. It will be worth the money.👏👏👏
Must admit not sure why you do not move the pie off the potatoes in the second one. Saw you leave it on top on another review. You really can’t eat a pie or potatoes on top of each other.
so just over £10 vs just over £15 it still is a lot just for a pie and a potato mashed up. the 1st one had cheap veg and more if it an mash. the only let down was the watery gravy. the 2nd one had less veg but thicker gravy. and carrots in the pie to bulk it out. but you are looking at £15 which is equal to 12 morrisons pies which are 2 for £2.50. There has to be cheaper places to get this meal from. even farm shops sell pies for £2.50 each which would equal 6 pie for the cost of the most expensive place. both pie did not look bad but it what came with them and the cost that is a bit much to swallow
The first pie and mash was very basic, i didn't like the look of the potato or the mixed frozen veg, the gravy was a let down no thickener in it at all. The pie was nice. The price of it was ok. The award pie and mash won hands down, it was worth the extra money especially the thick gravy, that's how i like my gravy
Pie in the first place looked good. That’s it. Spuds shite, gravy??? No water! Frozen veg I use in a hurry but if served that in a restaurant I’d hand it back. Second place all the way.
the award winning meal looked much better but I wasn’t a fan of the decor it looked like a canteen still I’m sure the food more than made up for it ❤🏴
Another brilliant vlog 👍. I could happily eat both. However the so called 'gravy' on the first meal was nothing short of disgraceful, totally spoiled a decent meal.
great review second one for me but the first pie looked good and real gravy is usually runny not thick as it’s made from residuals from the cooking but loved the content
The first one looked good but the mash looked like wall filler! The gravy was just coloured water, yuk! Pie minister is good I have had these I like the look of the meal, nice mash, and peas, good gravy so number 2 wins
The pies looked nice but both mash was a bit to solid for me and I think both places need a lesson in how to do gravy as the first was to thin and the second to thick
Oooh that first gravy was so thin it looked like dirty dish water! How disappointing! Gravy should coat the food. Definitely the latter for me and for only an extra £5, the difference in quality is world's apart.
The second meal might have been looked better but the floor as you went in and where the first set of table and chairs were disgusting it looks as if the whole lot I have not had a good clean. So therefore I would not trust the food if that was the first impression I got I will in turn tail and walked out
If anyone thinks that gravy in the first dish is standard needs to take a good long hard look at themselves in the mirror. I guarantee a pie and mash dish in Weatherspoons would blow it away.
Daylight robbery, frozen veg, instant mash, gravy well in Yorkshire you would be shot for serving that brown water, pie looked like a ding meal aswell.......it's so simple to cook this meal it's beyond my comprehension how they don't cook it from fresh......
As I've said before , you're so easily pleased with crap food. Brits call these 'ping meals' Once you've heard the ping you know your meal's coming out of the micro blaster.....meals served by kids but charged at top dollar. Live and learn fella 🤣
The Merchant doesn't even know how to make proper Gravy for heavens sake... It was as thin as dirty dish water... Whoever calls themselves the Head Chef at this place needs to quit the job immediately... They're not fooling anyone with serving this garbage... Even a child could make better Gravy than that... Never mind a supposedly Professional Head Chef... It's a complete no-brainer really... Pieminister wins hands down... The Merchant should hang their heads in shame... I would have sent it all back and asked for a full refund.
