Unknown to most people. Poodles are athletes. Goofy smart loving athletes that love to challenge you. They're the best.

That is true. My poodle loved to fetch and catch balls. I used to bounce a tennis ball at crazy angles for him to try to catch and he could do it 99% of the time. He also loved to go hiking-I live in portland and would take him hiking in the Gorge or on Mr. Hood and he could scramble up steep rocky trails like he was a mountain goat. Poodles rule!

I had a red standard poodle named Bronson, he passed away on the 5th of april this year at the age of 12. Having a Standard Poodle is just like having another person dressed in a wooly suit living at your house. Fantastic breed, no other breed comes close to the intelligence, loyalty and number of laughs you will have over the years. Please remember that about every 6 weeks a standard needs to be clipped. If you can't afford the grooming you can learn to do it yourself if you invest in a good pair of electric clippers.

@@mareek2007 training can be useful. We had a terrier mix that we trained as a guard dog. We trained him that intruders he doesn't know are bad, we used "get" for intruders and "friend" to make him stop. It's definitely hard because you need some friends willing to act like intruders and get growled at by a puppy and be super careful doing this as it can make your dog aggressive if they dont listen 100% to you. Dont do this if you want a walking companion.

Poodle cuts were made from hunting necessity. The short areas to dry quicker, the longer parts are over their joints, hips, and heads to retain warmth.

My Standard Mike was smart, but saved it for things *he* wanted to do. Like learning how to open the refrigerator. Now, this was shortly after I started feeding my dogs a raw diet, and kept about 4 days of raw chicken and pork parts in the fridge for 2 dogs. I came home from work one day to sheer carnage! Mike had opened the fridge and dragged parts into all the various rooms, leaving a trail of bits and bobs along the way. And what he couldn't eat? The stuff he wanted to save for later? He buried. In my duvet.

My cousin had a black Standard poodle female who one night started acting strange. Her two girls and her were movie watching and her husband's was away on business. Her dog was agitated and wanted into the attached garage. As soon as soon as my cousin let her into the garage the dog went crazy barking and attacking. The guy who broke into the garage ran out through the open door and was repeatedly knocked down and bite, before getting to his car down the street. My cousin was amazed at the dog's protection ability. The guy was arrested because he went to the hospital for dog bite wounds. He was a felon. My cousins girls were 8-10yrs. The dog Definately protected them.

My other dog was abused for his first 5 months, so he's definitely a lot different than most poodles. He is always nervous, especially with water and new places or situations. Their funny personalities are amazing. My older dog didn't want to go out in the rain (he's a pompous pup) and went down my stairs to the backyard a step every ten seconds.

I have a standard for a service dog. One important point you didn’t discuss regarding grooming is their hairy ears. The hair inside a poodle’s ears must be plucked pretty regularly and they are prone to ear infections due to their love of water and the floppy ears. Regular care can prevent infection.

Can I ask, what do you mean by plucking, can you trim the inside of the ears with scissors?
@geraldineports6973
@geraldineports6973 4 года назад
@@unaestrella1876 She means literal plucking. Most poodle owners literally pull the hair our of the dog's ear canal - or have their groomer do it. Otherwise it traps water and you'll have a fungal or bacterial infection on your hands. Another point is that sometimes poodles need their anal glands manually expressed - not always though. If you need that done your vet will do it for a small fee.

I agree with all you say. I don't know if our poodle is typical, but he has NO desire to break "the rules". I can put my dinner on the coffee table and go back into the kitchen to get some salt .. and he won't touch a thing. When he knows what you want ... he wants it too. Also, he creates his own games, is cooperative, enthusiastic, and playful .. but yes, a couch potato when nothing interesting is going on. And I don't think I ever laughed as much with this dog as I did when I was poodle-less.

Quick question: We’re getting a standard poodle puppy and I want to know, if a puppy gets bored does it just sit on the couch? Puppies are basically little kids. Needs tons of attention and training. Will the puppy try to play or rest? I’m guessing it will try to play, because older dogs don’t play as much and that’s probably one reason why they rest on the couch. Thanks

After owning four Standards through my life I take exception to considering the Border Collie as smarter. Poodles think! They plan, and they have an exceptional memory, remembering where they left something important four- five days before. They are the smartest of all dog breeds and subsequent research and testing has proven this to be so. They also have the uncanny ability to read a persons energy field and whether its negative or positive. My dog would lead me away from meeting anyone they considered negative or with ill intent. On the other hand stay would often lead me to meet others who were positive or outgoing and friendly. Standard poodles I trust with my life and as I enter my final years I am arranging to have two more as life companions and boating buddies. Just love 'em!

Me and my sister have had 5 black standards between us over the last 30 years. I love all kinds of dogs, but after my first poodle (Abigail - Abby) there's no way I could get any other type of dog. And if the costs of grooming is an issue it's really not that difficult to learn how to groom them yourself, especially if you're going to keep them in a puppy cut (which I always preferred). My sister gave me Abby as a surprise Christmas gift and I wasn't sure if I was up for owning a poodle (although I loved her poodles). Abby turned out to be a super dog in every way. She was so athletic and playful yet so gentle with children. She was great around people and other dogs. And we had a bond I've never experienced with another pet. I think I have one more poodle left in me (Abby passed away 5 years ago at the age of 16). My sister travels a lot so I do get my "poodle fix" pretty regularly when I babysit her 2 girls. The only question is do I stick with black or do I go with a different color. I if did go for a different color it would be a red or brown/chocolate one.

Relating to prey drives with dogs: It is possible to train your dog that they don't give in to their instincts so fast making it easier to control them however you won't be able to train it out completely. If you think about getting a dog for the first time and you look into different dog breeds there is a little tip I can give you. Every breed that has lop ears is usually a hunting dog (and yes, while breeds like the Golden Retriver make great family dogs they are hunting dogs and usually come with a strong prey drive) so if a prey drive is nothing you want to deal with better stay off those breeds. Than again every dog is different and has a unique character, just because a breed is known for certain traits doesn't mean they are all the same. But please keep in mind that these are traits that maybe you will have to deal with. At the moment people are really into "special" breeds like the Malamute, Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, Kangal, etc. and buy them without proper research. They don't know what they are getting into and unfortunately many dogs get abandoned in shelters because they are a lot of hard work. Be responsible before buying a dog and always be honest with yourself if you are capable of handling the dog breed that you want to own. When a breed is not recommanded for first time owners there is a reason to it.

People may also find useful to be aware of about poodles, from a veterinary standpoint, the common conditions they can develop. I think it is important to be aware of predispositions, as providing good veterinary care is also important if anyone is considering a poodle. These include; - Ear infections, due to the floppy, large, and hairy nature of their ears. It is important to keep their ears clean and dry to help minimise the risk of an infection developing. - Standard poodles are more prone to GDV due to their deep-chested anatomy. Especially so in large males. - Addison's Disease - an endocrinopathy also known as hypoadrenocorticism

Yes!! The Frey life!! It's so funny to me how ppl know about them now! I have followed them since the Scottland vlogs and now there channel as grown and so many ppl know them! But there one of the reasons (Lol I also have a lung disease so that was also a main factor) I got my mostly poodle (he is a F1B Goldendoodle) Service Dog!! He does medical and psychiatric alerts and tasks! (And once I get a mobility harness he will also train for light mobility tasks) but there so smart! He was potty trained in less then 3 days! He also has learend all his tasks super fast! Poodles are great dogs! Honestly if my dog wasn't a working dog, then he would be crazy. Because they are so smart they need something to channel there smarts into and to feel full filled. If he had to stay at home I think he would be a crazy dog. Idk how ppl get poodles just for stay at home pets, as I know mine would be crazy and looking for something to full fill his desire to work and use his brain! My dog so smart, he doesn't play with his food puzzle ball (they have to figure out how to roll it to get the food out) but he unscrews the top and OPENS it! He knows how to use his teeth and paws to unscrew it! I love him, but he is 1 smart dog 😊

@@Snickerdoods.x that surprises me that if he had big parents that he is only 40 pounds! Lol, are they sure they know who the dad is? Or was he the runt of the litter? My dogs mom was 50 pounds and his dad was 65. So my boys right between them at 62 pounds! And all his litter siblings range in size from 50 to 80 (the 80 pound one is the biggest, but in all honesty it's over weight, all the healthy weight ones are between 50 and 65 pounds xD) but if ur dogs parents where big that surprises me he was so small. Are u going to get another dog to train?

Having had several dogs in the family growing up... Spending the last 11 years with my Standard Poodle has been an utterly life changing experience. I've never bonded with a dog like I have my boy here.. He's a senior dog now, a little slower.. But still a playful, smart and affectionate goofball. And he's only gotten more cuddly and loving with age.. Always sleeping as close to me as possible. Poodles, especially the Standards, are such wonderful creatures.

Everything you said was on point! I have a cavapoo and he is basically a living teddy bear. Doesn't bark, doesn't shed, very affectionate, LOVES water (we always have to be careful when bathing because he will jump right in), and super smart. Like creepy smart lol. But a comedian. Like ripping blankets off us when he wants our attention, he does this boxing act where he stands on 2 legs and punches the air with his paw lol. Best pet to have!

FYI - Standards can have different coats. I’ve had very “tight wire/terrier like coated” poodles, as well as more soft coated poodles. One of the things I look for a line of the softer coated poodle. I prefer to keep mine with “longer hair”, and she’s at the groomer every 4 weeks in Southern California where we have virtually no rain. I alternate just a bath, and blow dry ($50-60 dollars), and bath, blow dry AND CUT ($110). I have to be honest that if there is no rain, I often don’t pick up a brush between grooms, and she is never matted. Of course in a wet climate - probably not the case. One misnomer - like with many long haired dogs, longer hair does act to insulate the dog from hot weather. I run her often, and even in the CA desert, where it’s over 100 degrees 6 months of the year - she will overheat much more quickly in a short coat, than a longer coat. I am very guarded and of course run her on much shorter runs, more frequently during the hot part of the year - but my personal observation has been like many articles advocating the same. I am retired, but I have had nothing but Standard Poodles since I have been 20 years old. I can’t even tell you with accuracy the dozens of friends and acquaintances who have ended up with Standards themselves (and multiples of them) after knowing mine. They are hard to beat. Easy, easy to housebreak, train, wonderful companions, no shedding, mine rarely sick, and long lives. Although controversial mine have ALL been self (free) feeders. Dry food and water out 24/7. I have never had a Standard that over-eats, or has been anything but perfect weight. I am lucky to live in a temperate climate with a secure yard, and mine have all used a doggy door 24/7 as pups, and housebroken 100% in 2-3 days. Easiest pet in the world - self feeds, self bathrooms, and a long walk or “run” every day.

@@maziz9721 it just depends on you. The miniatures are easy to travel with. The standards are heavy and take up a lot of space. We have traveled with both. They are amazing dogs. I recommend having multiple, as they are very social animals. You can get larger or smaller, depending on the breeder, as well as different colors, including multicolor (parti). Best advice I got was to make sure you go to a reputable breeder. Poodles were insanely popular in the mid-twentieth century, and were overbred. So, you need to make sure all the proper precautions were taken to minimize health issues. Amazing, amazing dogs.

Isn’t it amazing how much love and joy a dog can bring to our lives? I got my first dog by default about eight years ago. Never wanted an animal until I saw a golden being neglected and left at home alone 10-16 hours a day. I called the owner and politely asked if I could have his dog. He said yes! He just didn’t have time for him. It was the best phone call I ever made! Eight years later and millions of snuggles and kisses later...... It is definitely a commitment. A commitment I have not regretted for one second.

They love to retrieve! Never managed to teach ours to drop the ball because he always wanted to be chased. I had 3 siblings so we made a game out of it. I had two balls at all times. I’d throw it, he’d pick it up, then I’d throw the other one across the yard and we would all sprint over to it. He’d drop the ball to pick up the next ones and the first of us to pick it up got to throw it. Sometimes if he wasn’t fast enough he’d overshoot because he was going too fast and thought we were chasing us and he’d run past the ball and we’d be able to retrieve it. The game would eventually devolve into us working together to either trick him or surround him on all sides and herd/grapple him to pull the ball from his mouth.

You are spot-on with everything you said! I am a professional dog trainer and the dog my husband and I presently have is our fourth Standard Poodle. They are wonderful dogs, which is probably why they're mixed with so many other breeds. Our Finn is smart, playful and so affectionate. He's 55 lbs. but thinks he's a lap dog. Loves nothing better than to climb in your lap for a snuggle. 😁 Loves people and gets along well with other dogs too. I too hate shedding and drooling and love that these dogs do neither! They are definitely a vastly underrated breed, mostly because people don't know or understand much about them. But maybe that's a good thing so they are not spoiled by overbreeding.

I have a 3 pound toy poodle and she is absolutely not yappy. Yes, she barks when someone comes to the door, otherwise, she doesn't bark. She does sound sharp because she's a small dog. But, I do not consider that yappy. I'm a former professional toy poodle breeder and I will say they are fantastic, loyal, and way more than meets the eye to people. My poodles were bred specifically for vitality and temperament. Poodles are retrievers and they are also used for truffle sniffing dogs. They are excellent at finding truffles.
@MissouriCrookedBarnHomestead
@MissouriCrookedBarnHomestead 6 лет назад
Also, as a sidenote, there's a reason for those amazing haircuts on poodles, the continental clip. It keeps their joints warm when they are retrieving in water. And no matter the size of poodle, they are a poodle, toy poodles are just miniature versions of the big poodles. This is an important note...NEVER buy a merle colored poodle (spotted with blues, grays, and whites) because these dogs are NOT purebred. They are mixed with Australian shephards to get the coloration and carry the lethal gene called lethal white. You know an excellent breeder by doing your research on what they do in their breeding practices.
@juliagraf
@juliagraf 6 лет назад
I am also not a fan of the Poodle cross breeds. Usually they are not the healthiest of stock in parentage, and there is no guarantee of their temperament. I would rather adopt a healthy, lively cross-breed at a shelter than pay an exorbitant fee for what is essentially also a cross-breed from irresponsible breeders that do not follow pedigree rules.

My mimi raised and had toy oodles which I loved. Her younger boy and the father did bark more than her girl, the mother. Thankfully this was not trouble for their home environment because they lived in a single family home. Due to the importance of housing standards that at the extreme could get you the owner fined or kicked out of your shared residence, it's important to note you will need to train your poodle, like many breeds, to not alert to every noise because of the closer loving quarters. For those living near none pet owners, your beloved pet will be treated as yappy and may result in problems for you. Of note, she said "they're more prone to yap more than the standard breed" this is just a disclaimer because of the potential. All toy and miniature poodles are not the same. As most breeds, they will pickup behavior from their own way, other pets in the home or kids.... like my 1yr old poodle, Eleanor who gets super excited when my boys play with her and she bounces like a happy kid!

I’m so glad I found this video! Thank you for sharing your experience with Odin, he’s gorgeous! I also used to think poodles were the fru-fru type of dogs as well until two years ago my friend adopted a 10 year old miniature poodle. We’re university students sharing an off campus apartment adding to my also already owning a toy pomchi mix, her dog, Max immediately took to my dog and were always great together, obviously in the beginning he was having accidents and anxiety attacks because of the adjustment of change in surroundings but after a few months he fit right in and is a very loving boy. Surprisingly although 10 years old he easily learned sit, down, and shake and knew exactly when we would walk the two so he’d wait for us by the door in the mornings or wake us up if we were running late 😅. He is one of the smartest dogs I’ve met! It’s also hilarious at times, when left alone after a certain amount of time, if my dog is sleeping instead of bothering her or us he’ll happily grab one of his plushies and throw them up in the air and play catch with himself 😂 This past year, I moved in with my partner and June 2018 we unexpectedly also adopted our now 2nd dog as I was volunteering at a nearby shelter, we had a case of a puppy mill nearby and our shelter took in a fraction of the animals kept in the hoarding situation, from the dogs brought in there was a toy poodle who after a course of 5 months bonded with me and I knew she had to be ours, although she’s had a horrible past and little to no human interaction and is very skittish, she is very loving and even though frightened of men in general, she quickly became attached to my partner as well. In the beginning when we brought her home i was scared she and my pomchi weren’t going to get along because they’re both girls but they’ve surprisingly become really close and hilariously always ‘play’ (they do puppy pose at each other, chase one another, tackle each other then awkwardly stare at each other and that’s that 😂, it always cracks me up) together and never leave each other’s side. Our new addition never had potty issues with having accidents or anything and she just immediately assimilated into our daily lives. Also at 10 years old, we taught her sit though other tricks have been trickier 😅 who says you can’t teach old dogs new tricks! Sorry for the long post! Poodles are simply so easy and incredibly amazing dogs ❤️

These are wonderful family dogs. They do need to be taken out because they get depressed. My baby died this year on my birthday, I dont even know why, I miss her. But my dog loved every stranger, she would run to people so she can be pet, so it varies with personality, and definitely their hunting skills are too good. Just lovely dogs. I like smart dogs that are NONAGGRESSIVE. I am big on being able to go someplace with my canine companion without the worry of them misinterpreting the situation and biting someone OR feeling threatened or being reactive or hiding behind my legs and growling. Most poodles I have observed are perfectly composed in public and neutral to people and other stimuli in the environment. A poodle is on my short list if I cannot find and English Cocker Spaniel when I am ready for another dog. I do my own grooming and am absolutely conscientious about that so I don't think this will be a problem. I am also an active person so exercise won't be a problem. This breed is definitely a possibility.

Fun video and I especially like you pointing out that poodles are not all created the same. Some are much more active with a high prey drive - bred for hunting or a similar activity. Some poodles are smaller and wonderful companions for people wanting daily company. They definitely look for a challenge ... so if not directed by responsible human ... will find their own challenge. One of mine challenged the beautiful new dog bed - and won. Stuffing was everywhere! She was so proud - I learned a valuable lesson. Poodles come in such a variety of sizes, temperaments, activity levels, characteristics ... what do you want? I'd love to get an update ... 4 years later with Oden?

German Shepherds hard to train? Well sure it could happen but then my boss tells me stories about his Alpha standard poodle taking over his home... So yeah... lol Small dogs more prone to barking? Yikes... Let's fact check that... Many of these dog attributes are not always about the breed but about the individual dog, so not all Poodles are going to be like this one....

Love the video. I have a minature poodle. She’s amazing, super smart and loving. For anyone contemplating between standard and minature both are amazing. Miniature is same dog smaller package but same big personality. Pros of small dog is food and supplies cost less, they are suitable in smaller condos etc and they require less physical activity than a large active dog breed. End of the day they love you just as much and you love them just as much as a big dog

Love my goldendoodle!!! I can definitely see a lot of the same qualities you describe in mine, although he does have the goofy, uber friendly golden personality, he has all the intelligence and agility of the standard poodle!

Most people I have met do really hate poodles, specially small (white) poodles, cos they have this image of them to be annoying barky, biting, angry small dogs in silly haircuts, and ofc it have to be angry elderly lady owning the dog, still most people have met and pet poodles without even realizing it cos the dogs haven't had this "typical poodle haircut". they believe it was a bichon frise or something else and not a poodle. I have a miniature poodle.

That is so awesome. He is an amazing doggie. I have 3 rescues and my first 4. Yes I have a handful but you get used to it and is been 8 years you learn how to manage them. My oldest is a mixture of a miniature poodle he is very Intelligent just his barking and energetic he turned 8 recently he had surgery for a small tumor in the back of his neck. Then I have 3 teddy bears those are bichon poo they are 7 yr old they are lap dogs they are hypoallergenic dogs one of them will go to surgery soon for the same thing as my oldest. Then my rescues are from the streets of Puerto Rico my 2 girls one is estimated that is 7 yr old she is a mi-ki mix with brittany she has epilepsy and is under medication the other little girl is 4 she is a miniature poodle mix with schnauzer then she has a hip issue congenital and a boy 6 yr old shih tzu pure breed that is scared of thunders and is under medications. But I wouldn't change them for anything in the world they are my companion and I give my life for them. They are my kids not my dogs my babies. I love them to infinity and beyond.💝. Thanks for sharing with us your life with your doggie. In small I share mine.🤗

Great video! I'm a guy and I really love poodles. Most people are surprised when I tell them but they really are the most practical dogs. Easy to handle, athletic, healthy, don't shed, extremely intelligent, kind, non-aggressive, quiet, and the list goes on. They are almost everything most people want in a dog. My mom got our medium poodle Bonnie when I was 16 years old and we were all just blown away by her intelligence. The first day she started opening doors, trying to get out of the house (In Sweden we have door handles, not door knobs, so she would jump up to try and push the handle down). She basically just learned all the commands on the first couple tries. Eventually you didn't even have to say anything. You could point to places in the room and she'd walk to that spot. This isn't really something we trained her to do. She just started kind of getting it when I wanted her to go get her ball behind the sofa. I started noticing how she would try to read my body language and I started incorporating gestures into my commands and she very quickly started to respond to only gestures. So upon snapping my fingers she would come to me or look at me if she were already in the room. Moving my hand downwards would mean sit, doing it twice would mean lie down and upwards would mean going from lying down to sit, and again from sit to stand. We did have one issue with her and that's that she couldn't really manage being alone. This is unfortunately a fairly common problem among medium size poodles. She also had som amount of prey drive. She would try to chase deer in the woods, but that was basically it. Edit: I just remembered a thing i used to do. When i wanted her to sit on a sofa or bed I wouldn't say anything. I'd snap my fingers, she'd look at me, and then pat the place I wanted her to sit a couple times. What was interesting was that she clearly understood it. But she'd complain if she didn't want to do it and wouldn't obey always. Sort of like when you ask a friend if they just wants to hang out on the sofa, but they want to go out on a walk or whatever.

Mine is so similar she also will do things just by gesturing . She also goes to places you point to . And when you ask her something she doesn’t want to d9 she barks in protest but 4 out of 5 she will still do the command just very halfhearted 😂

I have a standard poodle. Poodles and Afghan Hounds are two breeds that have hair, - not fur, Hair grows but fur sheds. Aphans and Poodles will keep your house clean. My Standard Poodle takes her treat from my hand extremely gently, - which made me first suspect that their soft mouths might make them a breed originally bred for retrieving water fowl. My Poodle Dusk has my Boston Terrier for company and stimulation. I also have two large fenced yards where both dogs run and exercise. I pay for professional grooming every 6 weeks - which costs about $100. My Poodle and terrier bark and chase squirrels and make noise together. Love my gentle standard poodle, but she is 55 pounds and she is too strong for me to walk.

You should look into getting a front-clip harness, and use a double-end leash with it to train her not to pull on walks :) I just got one for Odin and it's a godsend!

All dogs DO shed, jist like people, as you can see when you brush him. The hair just gets caught in the curly hair. As a groomer, I recommend grooming every 6 weeks at least. My girl is very smart, she is my Diabetic alert service dog. Will always have a standard now on 😊

Very important point. It does not fall out on the floor it sheds into their coats and forms mats. I take mine every 4-6 weeks but I still brush just about everyday as they tend to develop mats quickly in their bendy areas on their legs from all the running and sitting. Mine have longish coats. Standards are great service dogs and therapy dogs too. We are going for our Therapy certification to visit the cancer clinic in my town.. They love the Standard therapy dogs as they are the only breed that is allowed to be with those undergoing chemotherapy.

I know this is late, but I wanted to know: I always wanted a poodle, my mother had one but she died just before I was born so I never got a chance to meet her (the dog, my mother is very still alive). My schedule is going out at 7am and coming home from 4pm-8pm,it depends on the day. After I get home I have usually a lot to do and I'm pretty tierd. I do have pets, I have two rabbits, but I wanted a dog. Should I get a poodle with my schedule??
@juliagraf
@juliagraf 5 лет назад
Melody 382 I think getting a dog with your schedule would be super unfair and actually cruel to a dog, full stop. A poodle would suffer greatly being alone that long. Please don’t get a dog, get another low maintenance pet or just be happy with your rabbits.

Odin looks my Teddy. He passed away a few years ago. I have had standard poodles for 25 years now and will never have any other breed. Cookie is our current poodle and she is very smart as you said. I taught her to ring a bell when she needs to go outside. We haven't had an accident since she was very little. I had 2 poodles when I met my husband. On our 1st date he said he didn't like poodles. When he met them he said "those aren't poodles they are Muppet horses." He had only seen little yappy ones before. Actually she does have some horse like traits. I swear she trots. She picks up her feet and bounces like a horse sometimes. She also acts like a barrel racer sometimes. We have a large fenced yard and sometimes she when she hasn't had as much exercise as she needs or just feeling energetic she does laps around the yard very very fast, leaning into the corners just like a horse that is barrel racing. She is very funny to watch. She is slightly barky when she plays with the cat. She also barks at people walking by on the street sometimes. But at least it isn't yappy. I am truly a poodle person!
