Great video. Im late to the party. Id also check the sole to see its flat as well and flatten it if it isnt. Another thing is to start with a retratcted blade then advance it into what you need as opposed to the other way round. When i grind the blade i only do it until a burr forms then i remove and goto the next grit.

Great tips! Thank you so much for sharing jlhuk! I need to break this plane out more often! I was just about to make a french cleat hanger for it the other day. Thanks so much for watching!

happy to see you entering the hand tool woodworking realm! I am not claiming to be an expert, but I do see a couple of things than can help you with using your handplane: 1. For honing the secondary bevel, you do not need to go through the grits, just go straight to the highest grit stone you have. If you go through all the grits for the secondary bevel, your secondary bevel will become wider very quickly, by then you will go to the bench grinder to re-establish the primary bevel. 2. do a search about the David Charlesworth ruler trick. 3. your shavings (at the end of this video) are way too thick, probably at around 5 - 10 thou, try to aim at a sub one thou shaving(for some type of wood, sub 2 thou if good enough).

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Very helpful comments. I think I've heard of the David Charlesworth Ruler Trick. I think I saw "stumpy nubs' doing that in one of his videos I was watching. Really appreciate your advice!

Make your self a sturdy bench, that doesn't wobble.

Oh, I've got one, it just has another project on it, and I'm unable to use it! Its a table top and I can't wait to get it done so I can get a large part of my shop back!

Dogg, are you Tamara for her woodworking skills, or is that what you tell Mrs. Dogg? Can't beat a No. 4. I'm using my Grandfather's (he would be around 140, or so, now). So if you take this kind of care with your Stanley, your grandkids will inherit a great tool, memory and legacy. BTW, you look like a youngster in this video.

That is so cool that you have you grandpa's planer. I wish I had some cool handy-me-downs like that. I am still trying to figure out blade settings and such on my planes. I love watchign Rex Krueger, he's been a big help. Hopefully I'm aging like a fine wine! Thanks as always for watching Meat!

Great video! Are Stanley planers good for beginners?
@FlynndoggWoodwork
@FlynndoggWoodwork 2 года назад
Great question! Really depends on what you budget is! I know I purchased a couple of sub par (cheaper) planers to learn on and I became very frustrated because the equipment wasn't that great (it wasn't just my lack of knowledge surprisingly). If it is in your budget, and you see hand tools being a part of your woodworking career, you can't go wrong with it!

Having the front knob be used for adjustments seems risky. Have you accidentally turned or loosened it while you are planing?

Not yet thank goodness, It is pretty secure when you tighten it down, I don't foresee it being a problem! But great point!

Stanley #4 Sweetheart handle detach has come off how can I fix it?
@FlynndoggWoodwork
@FlynndoggWoodwork 11 месяцев назад
That’s a great question and wish I knew how to answer it. I assume the screw has come off. I believe there is a screw that runs through the handle and attached to foot of the plane. Might be worth checking out some of Rex Krueger videos, he really tears those planes apart and you might be able to figure it out from one of his videos. Thanks so much for the question, which i could be of more help!

A “micro bevel” would have been just 10-20 stokes on your finest stone. That was a bit much.

Thanks for the comment, I trust your judgement as I am definitely still learning!

with expensive tool, there's lot of work to be done before using it even though its new,.....why !!!!?????😭
@FlynndoggWoodwork
@FlynndoggWoodwork 2 года назад
Well this is true, this is one of the reasons why I've been so intimidated by this tool in the past. I started with the lest expensive kobalt to try and learn a few things from that before I broke the bank for this one. In theory, you really don't need to do any of the sharpening things that I showed in the video, they are more best practices.
