Gabriel Landeskog scored the first goal of the Stanley Cup Final, and Andre Burakovsky scored the game-winner to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-3 overtime win against the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 1.
I hope it's a good series. I'm a Bruins fan. So I have no dog in the fight. I'd like to see the Avs win, though. I'm just glad Tampa knocked off the Rangers. Any year that the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers do not win the cup is a good year. Basically, it's been a good year for me since 1994 when the latter won.
What a way to start the series, two heavyweights going toe to toe with no one giving an inch. It's going to be a series to remember, that OT goal came out of nowhere!
@@danielbarritt761 Lol the Canadian farm team league is an embarrassment to the nhl. Should just move all the teams to the USA and set up a true farm league system.
What a great game. Arguably the 2 deepest and best systematic teams goin head to head. No Cinderella stories. Just 2 really good teams battling it out.
@@rafakrukowski2889 Kind of. Betting wise yes only because of home ice advantage and the fact the Avs can hang 7 or 8 on the best teams. But that's like it.
McKinnon wants to score. His teammates want him to score. With that mentality it could cost them the series. There were situations in this game in which had Mckinnon passed rather than shot a teammate would've scored. That mentality could cost them the series in the long run. This is a team game, not all "me me me me me me me."
Didn't matter to me who won the game. I was just HAPPY the goal was a good play goal and not some "garbage" goal or a goal scored that was accidentally deflected into their own net.
Let's just hope the penalty calls stay fairly even, with no favoritism for one team or the other. If it's a penalty it's a penalty. Call it, true to the rulebook.
If it goes that route, I think it would be the avs ... Because if the bolts can't stop the shots ... That was kind of the big advantage they had..no disrespect to the avs ..just think tampa has the better goalie, course score says otherwise if it's black and white lol
My goodness what a game. Give me more of this, give me game 7 overtime with these 2 teams and see what they've got. It's such a treat so see a championship finals with such an "if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best" mantra applying to BOTH teams at this point. Wow.
This game should be a message for Tampa that Colorado is going to be tougher than Dallas and Montreal from the previous years. What a goal from Burakovsky.
They went 6 games with that Stars the only way It will be tough Is If the Avalanche end up having a elimination game. We will see what happens great game 1
@@oasisraj840 I get what he is saying. Dallas was a good team and Montreal was a fluke team that has Carey Price carrying the team. Colorado is leaps ahead of both those teams.
Is it just me or do the Sportsnet commentators sound wayyy more enthusiastic and excited than the monotone commentators at ESPN except for Ray Ferraro.
ESPN has really dropped the ball this first season, not sure what they were going for. It's like ESPN and TNT tried to divide the qualities of the NBC broadcast (which was bad), and so while TNT has a lot of the people that worked for NBC they've figured out a way to be interesting, engaging and entertaining. ESPN is dry af the way NBC was
This is a far superior broadcast. The ESPN guy sounds bored and it takes away from the entire experience of watching. Not sure why TNT didn't have the cup finals - that's a much better broadcast as well.
@@BBQsquirrel You know what's insane about him? He's not only great at hockey...he's actually capable of providing insightful commentary on DOZENS of sports. If you watch the Olympics with him commentating, you'll see what I mean. Dude's just a consummate "sports guy". 👌
This is one of the best matchups we've ever seen. A team that's won back to back years with a seemingly unbeatable roster versus a team that was rock bottom a few years ago and now cruised through every opponent so far. We'll remember this one
Yeah it will be but that Vassy's known for getting hot/stronger as a series go on and Tampa is known for losing game once this Stanley Cup year more time than not.. he definitely didn't look sharp that game!.. even have to be a Lightning fan ( which I'm not😄) to know that game 2's and or game 3' is when I've noticed this Lightning team starts to play like themselves ... not too surprised Tampa lost this one.. in fact I'm a little shocked that it even went into overtime but yeah it should be a good one
What an amazing game, this series is shaping up to be fantastic. Hopefully Kuemper gets better as the series goes on and Kadri and Cogliano can come back soon. Go Avs!
Exactly the clash of the titans we all expected. Lightning started off cold but they didn't give up; just gotta get over those mental mistakes on defense! Giveaways in our own zone have been the death of so many playoff runs before this. The Avalanche skate fast and find seams to score on like it's nothing. Can't be giving a team that good those extra chances!
It’s mistakes from both sides if you really look at it lol avs we’re literally puck watching all second period. Avs mistakes was the same as lightning so it’s even! Who really wants it more, that’s what it is js 🤷🏻♂️
@@andresburciaga5897 i just cant help but feel that Tampa might have an edge in this series when it comes to defense and they can shut Colorado down which ultimately may win it for them. They are going to tighten up next game and the Avs have been more prone to mistakes this postseason then tampa on defense.
@@andidede3653 they aren't shutting the Avs offense down, Vasi stealing games is their only real chance (and he could very well steal them the series). Avs are playing JT Compher at 2C and still put up nearly 40 SOG...too much speed and pressure.
Both teams showed their weaknesses, I feel like the Av's has been known for longer, and they're showing across all 4 series that they can overcome the goaltending struggles. Also, the argument is definitely that Vas is better than Frankie and Kuemper, I wouldn't disagree. Av's won. They have a knockout punch with these lines that just keep coming, the depth is incredible. Win's a win baby, let's get 3 more!!!
Burakovsky coming through in the clutch again vs Tampa Bay. Caps fans remember him coming back from injury and scoring 2 goals to put away Tampa in game 7 to send us to the Finals. Go get another Cup Andre!!
He has had a bit of a let down of a season in terms of points/goals compared to a year ago, and even benched several times in these playoffs. Him scoring the game winner is just what he needed to get back to playoff performance he had last season. So happy to see it was him scoring for his and the Avs sake
This is probably the most talented matchup in a Stanley Cup Final since maybe Avs against the Devils in 2002... both these teams are hugely talented offensively and defensively and have role players contributing at a very high level.. The Blackhawks Kings rivalry was also tremendous in terms of all round talent but since they were both in the Western Conference they dont fit into this discussion
Tampa’s second goal and the GW goal is what I love to see. Precise, quick, on the fly passing that can only be replicated by hockey players of the highest echelon. And this is only the first game.
As a Stars fan, I am so absolutely happy for this dude! I'm glad his drought ended by leaving our horrid and stifling defense first system. He deserves to be allowed to be productive, to be creative, and to win.
Compher play is key 🔑 👌 he screen and for a split second Vasy don't see the shooting lane and decide to drop on his knees! Too late for the lateral movement! GOAL!
It is true that experience matters in the Stanley Cup finals. There is no doubt about it. The Tampa Bay Lightning has far more experience by a country mile. However, that doesn’t mean the Avs don’t have vets who have never been to the finals. One of them is Andre Burakovsky, who knows a little bit about scoring in the finals. I understand that Bednar had to change up the bottom six, but the third line had a very rough night. Lehkonen, Helm and O’Connor finished with -5 combined. Tampa’s top line punished them brutally with goals from Palat and Sergachev. There was no complacency or quit in the 2nd period. The Lightning just turned up another gear. This is where the team really miss Cogliano and Kadri. Cogliano would really help alleviate Lehkonen on some defensive duties while Kadri would help in the powerplay and face offs. Nico Sturm should be banned from taking faceoffs in this series. He was the worst performer by going 1 for 5 for the night. The Lightning’s bottom six outplayed the Avs’ bottom six easily. It was so bad that Bednar pretty much benched Newhook, Aube-Kubel and Sturm for majority of the game. All of these players had less than 8 minutes of ice time. Meanwhile, Bellemare, Maroon and Perry played in double digit minutes. I was definitely not happy with the line change attempt by the Avs within the first 2 minutes into the 2nd period that almost led to a Lightning goal. Tighter line changes should be a priority. One of the things I was pleased to see is Colorado taking advantage of the powerplay. Tampa is ranked 2nd in penalty minutes in the playoffs. This is something they need to take advantage of whenever the opportunity arises. It was also great to see them kill penalties calmly and quickly. Best player on the ice for the Avs was Valerie Nichushkin and it wasn’t even close. His style of play threatened the Lightning all night long. His efforts paid off greatly with a goal and game winning assist to Burakovsky. Nichushkin’s fingerprints were all over the ice tonight. There are reports that Nichushkin and the Avs couldn’t come to an agreement for a contract extension before the start of the regular season. Sakic cannot be stingy with this man when all he has done is produce. We’ll see how that saga unfolds in 2 weeks. I thought this stat was very interesting. In the regular season, Vasilevskiy has the worst save percentage against the Avalanche in his career with a .877 SV%. This is with a sample size of 5 games. Take it with a grain of salt as it can be considered misleading. This game reminded me of game 1 against the Blues. Avs in 5 because the Blues and Lightning have one thing in common when they face the Avs: they don’t have the speed to keep up. That suspicion was confirmed after tonight.
@@day1avsfan907 Fair point. I was speaking under the assumption where Cogliano or Kadri was not injured. Someone else needs to step up because Sturm cannot be taking anymore faceoffs
The NHL playoff system really got it right this time. The two best teams in the NHL right now head to head. Awesome series to watch even for a fan of neither team like me. Just great hockey on display.

I just dont think the Bolts have faced such a fast paced team in the playoffs. Everyone always doubts the Avs until they face them on the ice and realize they are able to skate circles. Avs made quite a few mistakes. They need to tighten that up. Kuemper has been out for a long time he was bound to be a bit rough. We got this. GO AVS!
@@JarradBruessel32 New York was slow. Very slow. Toronto was decent. Probably why it went to 7. And yes Makar made a mistake as I said. Multiple mistakes tonight. But the Avs are just faster but I don't expect you to accept that since you're a Tampa fan

Game 2 will be a rougher time. Both teams are awake now. Tampa has the opportunity to learn and capitalise on Avs weaknesses and mistakes. Avs has the opportunity to improve their defence drills and recovery hustle. One thing for sure, Avs have that crucial first game, seeing their offence is a thing of beauty because it's just constant! Let's get game 2.
Let's go! This is how the Avs have to play - fast. Just outshoot the Lightning and create more chances. The goalie matchup will always favor the Lightning. What a f'n stud Nichushkin has turned into!
Commenting as a "casual" hockey fan that goal at 4:33 was a thing of BEAUTY. I wish that college and pro basketball would try to mimick the flow of hockey, and tell the refs to stop calling fouls a million times a game.
If thats the kind of ball you wanna watch then go to the park. Other then that. Carry on. It was a thing of beauty. Might wanna watch soccer too. No not being sarcastic. Some of those goals are a thing of beauty as well.
that chance a minute into the 3rd period, if the lightning take the lead there, it would've been a back breaker. I love the lightning's value in this series. Gambling wise.
Lightning realizing what it's like to play a real team for the Cup final. But what an awesome game!?! How the hell Nick Paul redirect his own shot into the net? And that Kucherov Palat play was disgusting. Gotta love playoff hockey!
Bolts have been playing "real teams" throughout the playoffs (Leafs, Panthers, Rags) = Avs are the ones who've been playing softies... This series should def go the limit to Gm7 with more OT's to come!! GO BOLTS!! ⚡️⚡️⚡️
@@Roostermania2010 I didn't say playoffs...I said Stanley cup final. I was making a jab at the Habs and Stars in the previous years. Lightning didn't have any easy road to get here for sure. I was just pointing out that the last series won't be near as easy this year.
@@klava27 Yeah, okay... No question, the 2022 Avs are superior to the 2021 Canadiens & 2020 Stars... and I hate, Hate, HATE the Montreal Canadiens (always have, always will).
Puck randomly bounces directly to Colorado three separate times on the same game-winning play. Amazing. Two clears and one blocked shot, right to the Avs. Combine all that talent with great luck/bounces and the Avs are a scary looking machine.
Lightning's Goalie played spectacular. Good enough to win that's for sure. Kuemper didn't play all that great great but enough to win. Will definitely need to play better though.
He really didn’t. His SV % was below 90% (as was Kuemper’s). Kind of a poor showing by both. However Vas is an excellent goalie as a rule. He will be better next game. Hopefully Kemper will too.
Nice game as expected. Avs were the better team today but the worst thing they can do is to start underestimating Tampa and getting too comfortable that they are the better team.
Keumper made it close. He hasn't played well in the playoffs. Avs should have won this game in regulation 3-1. AVs should have stayed with Francouz. The entire team seemed to play better with Fancouz in net. If they lose this series, it will be because of Keumper's poor play. He just looks slow, and clumsy compared to Francouz.
@@JohnSmith-qq7yw I disagree and this is to all the people saying the goalies didn't play well. Avs 1st goal. Hard shot, right between the elbow and hip, through a screen. Try dropping to your knees and squeezing your elbow to your body. Avs second goal. Tip off the defense turns into a knuckler 5 hole. TB first goal. Crazy backhand pass that checks up where keumper may have been able to play it otherwise. Then a crazy series of events where DK slightly overplayed it. Avs 3rd goal. 5 on 3 pp where the avs had perfect control of the puck. TB second goal. Perfect passing goal. Nothing DK could do on that. TB 3rd goal. High perfect wristshot through multiple screens that bounced off both posts. Avs ot winner. Great forecheck turns into a scramble in the TB zone. Summary: These were all great goals and the goalies all played well. The puck bounces certain ways in certain games. This was a great game 1 in what looks to be a great series.
Ok , I always thought the score sheet was to decide the outcome of icehockey games , thanks for correcting me. So maybe you can enlighten me who´s the actual SC champions för the last decade since I assumably also got that wrong ?
I admit that at the start of the playoffs, I was skeptical that the Bolts could get back to the Final and play at this high of a level. I was wrong and am duly impressed. They are on a great run
