I live in Martinsville,Va. I have been eating Stars Brunswick stew for years. It taste almost as good as as what you get from people who cook it up from scratch at local fundraisers in the fall of the year. I have to go to Wal-Mart to get it. For what ever the reason most grocery stores no longer carry it. I too highly recommend it.
It defiantly does the job when you need a Brunswick Stew fix. You do have to look for it; it's sad because it seems like an old regional tradition is dying. Thank you for the comment neighbor; I really appreciate it!

@@billybobbob3003 One of the things I like about Brunswick stew is how regional it is. The way people make it varies a lot. Where I live now on the coast they make it in ways I do not like at all. Stars is no where near as good as what I would call "the real thing"... slow cooked in a big cast iron pot... but it is much closer to what I grew up with than Mrs. Fearnows. I'd much rather have less questionable ingredients in my stew, so Fearnows may be better from that standpoint, but as for taste... that is a matter of personal opinion. U can also get the Stars brunswick stew at Kroger at martinsville but its better at walmart ($5 for 2 pounds) cause its the same price as kroger ($5 for one pound) but get a pound more of it.

I agree the name is interesting. 😂 I don’t usually eat food from a can so I wanted to know what to expect before I open it. Now I’m going to be on a quest for some good Brunswick Stew for the next several weeks. 😂💝

I finally saw Star's brunswick stew a few weeks ago for the first time since my childhood in NC - and now I can't find it! None of the Walmarts in my area seem to carry it anymore. They do carry Mrs. Fearnow, which I hadn't heard of til tonight - and now I know not to buy it, lol. Stars really is great for store-bought.

I grew up in North Florida but have lived the past 22 years in Wisconsin. Brunswick Stew is one of the many foods I miss. Castleberry's makes a canned version that's not bad, considering its canned, but I haven't tried Stars. From what I've seen on your video I'd say Castleberry's is your best bet for a traditional (Georgia style) Brunswick Stew.
I love this subject! I wonder how different it is down in Georgia. It's very different here on the NC coastal plain than it is up in the Piedmont area where I was born. Since food is starting to be the same everywhere you go, regional differences are cool and interesting to me. I will try the Castleberry's soon. I do not understand why he even bothered making a taste test and food review on these two products when he already has an opinion of the 2…. Not a blind comparison, he went in knowing “his” winner… geeezzzzz.
I just tried the "Mrs Fearmow's" (and that is an odd name) and it was awful. First off, it was mostly potatoes which I'm not used to in Brunswick stew. Second it was very salty. I mean WAY too salty. It's Star's for me. No, doesn't taste like Grandma's but it's a lot better than I make.

I found 2 cans of Mrs. Fearnow's Brunswick Stew from Hope Farm left on the grocery shelf during the 2020 pandemic... I thought it was some kind of joke.
I live in VA and ran into Stars Brunswick Stew about 6 months ago. Never heard of Brunswick Stew up to that point, but I absolutely love it. So much in fact that I modified it into my diet so I can lose weight while enjoying my meals.I combine 1 cup of Brunswick stew, two diced up skinless chicken tenderloins (cooked), small handful of Jalapeno peppers, 1/3 cup French cut green beans, and my super secret canning juice (tomato juice, olive oil, white vinegar, Italian seasoning, salt, and sweetener). Fills a pint and half jar and cans for a shelf stable meal of 400 calories and 40 grams protein....oh and it's delicious :P

That's the tomato in it. After the video my wife and I decided that the fact that the Mrs. Fearnow's was more red may mean more tomato and that's why I don't like it as much. When I like Brunswick stew it usually looks more orange. In fact my mom no longer eats it because the tomato's bother her stomach. I told he she should make it like the Burgoo I mentioned, which is basically the same stew, but with no tomato's, so it's brown. Thanks a bunch for watching and I hope you have a Happy New Year too!

I don't live where I grew up. Down here in the "low country" the stew is very different that what I grew up with in the Piedmont area of NC. Star's is the ONLY store-bought Brunswick stew I will eat. It reminds me of the stew they serve at the Floyd Country Store. I do not like Mrs. Fearnow's stew at all! I live in Botetourt County, VA.
Well that makes me want to go to Floyd Country Store! I've never been there. Castleberry's also makes Brunswick Stew that may be a little better than Mrs. Fearnow's, but I only buy Star's. Iam an old Graham boy. I bought some Star's brunswick stew yesterday. It is the only Star's product I like these days. It isn't as good as the stuff the churches and firemen make, but it is ok.

it's not even fair... Stars is refrigerated and made fresh versus the Hope Farm stuff which is preserved & canned and never tastes good... plus Star makes all the Eastern NC food staples like hot dog chili, cole slaw, pimento cheese.. if you want good Brunswick stew just go to Smithfield's BBQ which is all the place.. but really you need to head the great BBQ restaurants of Eastern NC to get the best quality.. Red Brunswick stew is too ketchupy...I prefer the version made without Tomatoes which looks like the version that you're eating here..
First off, thank you for the comment! I really appreciate you taking the time. And I agree, this stuff doesn't seem to do well when canned, so the fresh stuff is gonna be better. However... most of the people I know from Burlington where Star is located look at them as kind of a joke. I never buy their brand of any other products and everyone I know hates their pimento cheese and loves another Burlington, NC classic, Stan's. I personally do not like Smithfield's stew at all, but it's all down to preference. One thing you say that is very interesting to me! My mom hates all the tomato in Brunswick stew because all that acid upsets her stomach, so she would sometimes make it with no tomatoes. BUT... that is not technically Brunswick stew (I recently learned this)... a tomato base is kind of a requirement for it to be Brunswick stew. Without tomatoes it is really Burgoo, a stew made pretty much the same as Brunswick (whatever is available, basically) but no tomato's. It's big in Kentucky and that area. I want to go up that way and have some authentic Burgoo one day. Thanks again for the comment and happy stewing!
They changed the recipe when a new company bought it. It was so terrible they went back to the original recipe. Which is Mrs. Fearnow's. In short when this video was made, terrible old recipe. Now original delicious recipe. All that being said I'm scared to try anything Stars brand. Most everything they put out taste like crap. But so many people here are saying Stars Brunswick Stew is good. So against my better judgement I'll give it a go..
I understand your reluctance... Star's slaw, chili, pimento cheese... I don't like any of it at all! I do enjoy this stew from time to time. I haven't tried anything else from Star's, but I can promise you that their Brunswick stew is as close to homemade as I've ever tasted. And I grew up in the Piedmont region of Virginia where making Brunswick stew for local charities and non-profits like the fire department is an annual event. I've been eating stew for over 50 years so I know what I like, and Star's is the best tasting store bought Brunswick stew ever. Just look at the meat hanging off his spoon in this video. It's the real thing.
@@superiordelivery4256 I agree 100%. There is not better store bought that I have found. This stuff is good. There really is no competition as this is fresh and the other brands I have tried are canned, and this kind of stew doesn't seem to "like" the canning process. Thanks again SD!
Thank you for clearing that up about Ms Fearnows stew Gaarasaiyan. When Ms Fearnows was sold to castleberry, they chopped it up. It is now in better hands, and resumed back to Lilly Pearl Fearnows recipe. ♥️♥️
