@sidpheasant7585
@sidpheasant7585 2 года назад
That was a really great episode - how to fit so very much into 40 minutes? How to fit a whole other life into a few minutes? The show achieves with us what the story achieved with its character! Believe it or not one of my good (Trek-loving) colleagues regards this episode as lame. He is a few years younger than me, though. Think of Picard's secret longing to have lived a more conventional life with wife and kids. Deeply touching in all ways. In one of the movies, Picard cries at the death of his nephew - the closest thing he had to that family. And then Picard meets Kirk that time, and both dwell on the idea of being married to their ships - sometimes the real-life fate of the Navy officer... We should not let it mean anything to us out here in "the real world", yet we do and it does. In the original poem "The Inner Light" (which George Harrison also built on), we read "Without going out of my door, I can know the ways of heaven". Perhaps we should amend that to "some of/part of" the ways of heaven, but the Holy Spirit came to me in my bedroom, and from that moment I KNOW this is the truth. Star Trek did this kind of thing for us, and there was always a fierce debate as to whether the show was religious (Roddenberry was determined that it was not, and was not even such a nice guy, yet he had the vision - perhaps literally, and I am pretty sure there is divinity in there somewhere, in spite of everything).

The original score was done with a smaller pick-up studio orchestra as the entire film was made on a smaller budget than the original ST Motion Picture which was over budget and over blown. At 59 and being a lifelong Star Trek TOS fan, I had no idea that the "vocals" were performed by a human. I had always thought the original version from the 60's used a Theremin or something similar in order to simulate the vocals. I became very emotional seeing the finale of this video.

Little known sad fact. There are lyrics to the theme song. It was written by Roddenbary as a cash grab. It was never recorded. His lyrics would appear in the sheet music. He would get royalties. Alexander Courage was not amused. So GR would be cowritter.

The vocals, performed by singer Louie Jean Norman (b. 1913, d. 2005) were only in the 2nd season opening title recorded in the 1967. Season 1 used the "cello version" (a more subdued arrangement also performed in this concert) and to avoid paying music royalties to the vocal performer for Season 3, yet another opening rendition was recorded using just a very theremin-like organ sound for the main theme instead of a human voice, screwing Loulie Jean out of continued royalties. Or so the producers thought. But then came the perpetual reruns, and because it is widely considered the best arrangement, most foreign markets ran Star Trek with only the 2nd season title sequence, so Loulie continued to receive her fee after all :)

The main melody from the First Contact theme, the one that starts around 1:04:55, is one of the most beautifully unfolding melodies I've ever heard. When it crescendos with the cymbal crash, no matter how many times I've heard it, I still get goosebumps. Jerry Goldsmith was such an amazing musician! Also, I'm so glad that they arranged a suite from "The Inner Light" Next Generation episode. In addition to being an excellent arrangement of that music, it reminds me in part why that is one of my favorite Next Generation episodes. Speaking of goosebumps, when Picard says "oh, it's me, I'm the someone" at the end of that episode... such a powerful moment. One of Patrick Stewart's best performances in my opinion.

Definitely. Too bad that nowadays, in the "deconstruction era", they doesn't seem to want to make at least one scene like that where we could appreciate the titular ship in the show in it's full glory. I also always liked this main theme much more than any other. Probably because back in the day the Trek of my childhood was TNG :)
@ChrisWeston42
@ChrisWeston42 Год назад
I think they ought to have done that with the TNG movies, especially when the introduced the Enterprise E. That said, I think First Contact was a masterful Trek film. They should have worked it into the end of Generations somehow, but I can’t image how that would have worked.

At 30 years old I just discovered and completed TNG for the first time. I was only just born when season 3 was on tv. I didn’t think anything would ever match it, but I just finished Voyager, which I absolutely adored. I feel like I’ve experienced something truly special. A life affecting series of stories. They are utterly ageless and way ahead of their time. And this music... wow. If I live another thirty years, I know I’ll still be listening.

It's an interesting decision in the sequence of pieces to have the Nemesis music come before First Contact, because the opening of the Nemesis music is clearly a variation on the opening of First Contact. Personally I would have played First Contact first for that reason, plus it preceded Nemesis in the historical release date as well. Cheers to my fellow Trek Fans!!

Amazing. I could feel the nuanced emotion in every piece. It was tender at just the right moment, and robust when needed; a rollercoaster of precision, musical talent and a conductor who I could feel was as passionate about Star Trek as any life long Trekkie. This was an outstanding concert, and I kicked back with the headphones on and the volume up. I’ve been a Trekkie since ‘66. 47:34 That French horn player lost his embouchure for a second and flubbed the note. Since the horns were carrying the melody above the orchestra, it stood out like a sore thumb, otherwise it may never have been noticed.Things like that can happen to the best of players on any instrument. But the French horn is a notoriously difficult instrument to learn, control, and master. I played cornet for years, so I tried my friend’s horn thinking I could play it right away. The sound I made was akin to a moose calf calling to it’s mother. So I bow to musicians who have mastered the French horn. Cheers 🎺

@@acceptedsugar Oh my yes. It’s a beautiful theme and one of my top favorites. When I rewatch Voyager episodes I allow the opening credits to play to hear the theme & watch the nice CGI. Yes, it is too bad about that horn player and the one flubbed note. I suppose a sound engineer could smooth that over. Have you heard the Film Symphony Orchestra? They specialize in film themes & have a channel on YT. The orchestra is outstanding, and their conductor, Maestro Constantino Martinez-Orts is superb. Cheers!
