So this Janitor Gene character was one of the what? 80 - 100 personnel that stayed with Discovery? So instead of the show writing some sort of camaraderie and general respect for the crew now stranded in the future, blatant disrespect for a member of Starfleet doing a job you don't want to do is so un-trek. It is an STD. The franchise has contracted (pun intended) a bad case of Alex Kurtzman. It's a highly contagious disease, and by the terms of its contract usually takes at least 5 years to run its course. Symptoms include poor writing decisions, complete disregard for established canon, and weak mary-sue characters. Protect yourself from Alex Kurtzman: avoid all contact with CBS All Access and wash your eyes out thoroughly after viewing any Kurtzman trek related youtube content. For all the claims that TOS was insensitive (sexist, racist etc.), ST:D still allows for this scene where crew members (including officers) are demeaning towards one another. TOS crew may have had their moments (particularly during high stress situations, but that is to be expected and they resolved them in the end) but they were never this rude to one another. Captain Kirk cared about his crew, and took it personally when he failed them. The officers of ST:D could care less about their subordinates. The fact that this janitor was called Gene and that the officer said they have already forgotten it, is a perfect illustration of what ST:D's attitude towards Gene Roddenberry's original vision. I don't know whether this was intentional or not but if it is that is like sticking up the middle finger to the old school fans.

Only for them to die in the wormhole passing through the Galactic barrier with high vitals. The main reason why the human survived was cause he had low vitals due to cryo. I love Discovery, but this didn't hit right. Whether it's a jibe at old trek, Roddenberry, fanbases or not, it came across as elitist and frankly vile behaviour. The ship travelled a 1000 odd years into the future with a skeleton crew of die hard Trekkers and there wasn't one moment of camaraderie or team spirit. This "no name" was one of the people who literally risked his life for the mission, and what is supposed to be "the fate of humanity" and he's treated with the disrespect of an Edwardian peasant. Similarly, later in the episode, another female "no name" offered help to the same Officers who were in huge amounts of pain and failing to complete a vital task because of it, and she was similarly dismissed as an inconvenient gnat. Even if this is a nod to the new show "Lower Decks" or how these background characters have been ignored in the past, it really bothered me... When Stemets ended up bleeding everywhere, I was like; "Good, serves you right for being a tin-god-arsehole and not giving the task to the obviously more capable ensign who's day you just ruined".
