Star Trek: Inside the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A/Refit (Deck A-J)

So I have decided to revisit the iconic TOS Enterprise 1701 A / Refit from Star Trek, but this time designing each deck one by one. Deck A-J, a fully realized 3D model. Part 1 of 2. This is part one of the Enterprise NCC-1701 A or refit which will mainly cover the primary hull, deck A through.
The refit was the most extensive the Enterprise NCC-1701 underwent during her lifetime and involved an almost complete rebuild of the ship. This level of refit had always been part of the mission plan for Constitution-class ships and the Enterprise was just one of several in the class that underwent the procedure, which greatly extended their potential operational life.
The warp engine was upgraded to serve for another 15 years, but other Constitution-refit Constitution-class ships class ships remained in service until the 2290s.
While the structural frame of the ship was on their predecessors but retained, the hull plating was completely renewed.

@@outlawedTV88 I mean, they were built for space travel where structural integrity is based on zero-G and limited G environments. They don't need to be able to float or survive in atmosphere since they were never built for that. All things considered, I think the Constitution class is one of the least-egregious space ship designs for Star Trek behind the NX-01 and Miranda class.
@outlawedTV88
@outlawedTV88 Год назад
@@moore2077 yes they did. Remember that Voyager actually landed on that planet. Spce shuttles are all built for atmospheric conditions. But all that is just for movies no basis in reality.
@moore2077
@moore2077 Год назад
@@outlawedTV88 Voyager is also way more modern and designed with a unique exploration purpose. Most Starfleet ships would never do that because they'd be either immediately or slowly crippled by being on the planet. At the very least, Constitution class ships are never doing that because they are space ships built for space and don't go to land.

I always put it down to life support shortcomings. A ship the size of Enterprise could hold thousands if you packed them in like modern military naval "wessels" such as a nuclear aircraft carrier.
@redenginner
@redenginner Год назад
Given that part of its mission profile is long range deep space exploration without resupply,large and relatively luxurious crew spaces are kinda a requirement to keep people from going insane on multiyear voyages. Dedicated warships like the Defiant or even the constitution derived Dreadnought class likely had internal arrangements much more akin to modern warships.

The "A" was not destroyed over Genesis. That was the original Refit. The NCC-1701A flew all the way to the sign off at the end of The Undiscovered Country
@christophermitchell7001
@christophermitchell7001 2 года назад
Correct, the NCC-1701 -A that Kirk later commands was originally commissioned as NCC-1717 USS Yorktown and was re-commissioned after the original NCC-1701 destruction over Genesis( though this ship was like the Enterprise, a refit of the original Constitution class) . In fact we see both shake down cruises in the Movies,.... In the Motion Picture we see the original NCC 1701 shake down after refit while they are on their way to V'Ger. And we see the recommissioned NCC-1701-A shake down during Final Frontier, Star Trek V.
@classicgalactica5879
@classicgalactica5879 2 года назад
True. That being said, Enterprise A was not a Constitution Class refit. It was an entirely new ship from the keel up designed to test warp drive in smaller, more familiar nacelles than those used on the Excelsior. It states in the last part of Mr. Scott's guide to the Enterprise that she was the lead ship in what would have been the new Enterprise Class. She was originally Christened U.S.S. Ti- Ho and her registry number was NCC-1798, but was renamed Enterprise A with the registry number NCC-1701-A, and was given to Kirk and crew after they saved the planet in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. That's why Scotty couldn't figure her out in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, even with a Constitution Class refit manual. It was also the reason why when visiting the holodeck in Star Trek: The Next Generation when he wanted to visit the bridge of the Enterprise he told the computer just Enterprise. No bloody A, B, C or D.

@willgillies5670 2 года назад
@@classicgalactica5879 I have that book, and it's never been declared to be 100 percent canon, it kind of implied that they proposed the ship upgraded to Transwarp at the end. Besides does it really make sense to give a BRAND NEW SHIP to Kirk? I prefer the 1701-A was a refit Constitution, one done later than the TMP Enterprise, could have been the Yorktown. If your using the tech manuals as reference, the TNG tech manual says 1701-A was formerly Yorktown.

You seem a bit confused about these two versions of the Enterprise. The original refit as shown in the first three movies was the original Constitution class Enterprise completely remodeled and upgraded. There was no 'A" as it still was the original ship. The Enterprise A did not come along until later. It was a completely new vessel from keel to bridge. Nothing of the original Enterprise was part of the A. In point of face the A was originally going to be have a different name but because of the heroics of Kirk and his crew the ship was renamed Enterprise-A and given to Kirk to command. Hope this helps the confusion. Your graphics are absolutely fantastic and I really enjoy watching your videos.

What interesting is that most fiction is based on fact and this certainly is the case with the USS Enterprise. All you have to do is look at retired naval ships like the USS Little Rock or USS Intrepid or USS Midway and you can’t even recognize them compared to their original WWII silhouettes and planforms. What’s interesting is that since those ships lasted longer than the designers ever intended them to.. more modern ships like the Spruance class destroyers were designed from the outset as modular designs meant for growth-but were then retired early after the Peace Dividend at the end of the Cold War.

EDIT: Forgive me! I did not remember correctly. This does line up with the -A as it did not have a weapons station per movies 4/5/6, though Spock’s position is on the starboard side and not behind Kirk. The book Mr Scott’s Guide to the Enterprise does still show the -A bridge as having the Weapons & Defence console as per the Refit even though it is not there in the movies. 🖖 Amazing work! Though at 4:47 the science station location is correct for the Refit as shown in ST:TMP, but it was relocated to the starboard side as of ST:TWOK onwards. The weapons section is missing on the port side.

I also like the D from Next Generation (which coincidentally was being made and aired around the same time as the last three TOS cast films), but dammit as a movie buff who considers Wrath of Khan the film that made him love films, the Refit is absolutely perfect.

I love your work and I LOVE this ship… The TOS Movie Era is MY Star Trek (what I grew up first seeing) and this is my favorite ship design ever… Thanks for doing this! One issue/thought. On Deck One you do a good job with that docking port (that confused me so much as a kid in ST:TMP), and you always find a logical space where the head could go. However, I paused and rewatched the various views and could see no way that one could get INTO or OUT OF that area… But it does seem that if the port turbo lift had a second door facing aft, it could access that area. And one could imagine putting that lift into standby mode, where both doors would hold open and it could serve as an access way to/from the bridge. I’m almost embarrassed about my level of interest in something so small, but then I think I’m just inspired by your work! 😊👍🏼

@MatthewCaunsfield
@MatthewCaunsfield 2 года назад
You're basically correct with the use of the port turbolift; according to the behind the scenes material, the portside turbolift would rotate on the spot to allow access to the docking area behind the Bridge. You can sort of see this in ST1 when Spock first arrives on the Enterprise with the direction that Chekov and Spock head on/off screen. You can see the turbolift doorway to the airlock staging area (it's a bit narrow but it's there) at 04:24

in case anyone is interested, I leave my opinion here: The USS Enterprise NCC-1701 first appeared in the 1964 pilot chapter, in the 1966-1969 TOS, in The Motion Picture, T'he Warth of Kahn, and The Search of Spock on, after the argument suggested that the federation considers it a ship too old, it is sadly destroyed. The Voyage Home (1986) first features The Enterprise NCC-1701-A. replacing the modernity effect of the Excelsior ship only in the last scene. At that time Mr. Michael Okuda begins collaborating on the franchise. At the same time, in 1987, Gene Rodenberry, who was once again in power, pushed The Next Generation, which is slowly beginning to become familiar with a new Enterprise and new crew. In 1989, with a period of changes at the top of executives Paramount Pictures, The Final Frontier was finally released, with constant script changes and budget cuts; this is where we first see the U.S. Enterprise-A. ship of which we know very little. Only at the beginning of the film do we see that it has many operating problems. On a novel somebody explains that a team of engineers reconstructed a prototips on parallel Tomé to the ship "Excelsior", but it is Novel of the expanded universe, reliable to a certain extent- if we look at details of the 1989 production we see that they share corridors and sets of the set of TNG .. (with different lighting) Something similar happens with The Undiscovered Country .. where we see the Enterprise NCC 1701-A again In short, the Enterprise NCC 1701 has two eras: that of TOS, and that of the Movies of 1979, 1982 and 1984 where the internal distribution changes. (Memorable and sublime 7-minute scene from R.Wise's movie and Jerry Goldsmith's suite). and from the 1989 and 1991 Enterprise NCC-1701-A films, it is the least known spacecraft in the entire ST universe.

This is a great 'explanation' of just "why" the federation kept it's 'saucer' main-crew are in a bunch of concentric circles. Officers, even while 'in bed', were but a few seconds (or, maybe minutes, by way of Jeffries Tubes) from their Bridge Stations. Any crew needed for Weapons, Shields, Environmental Control, or Sensor/Nav/Science were also able to 'get across' from one end to the other of the Saucer by way of 'pie-cut' corridors. Always near a Station, always able to move aside-of Light Damage done. This uses your Manpower assets in 'bad times' the best, where, a Klingon D-6 or K'Tinga D-7 would have, um, whom-ever there-is-left, in the Bridge Boom Section after hard fire. Also, since the Saucer, if reasonably Intact, can be a separate Sub-light space vessel, and, again-if-intact, be an Atmospheric Glider/Lifeboat. While frail-looking at first glance, the Federation design ethos has some validity in dealing with the harsher realities of space travel, while being 'just comfy-enough' for long-haul journeys.

In the novel by William Shatner called "Ashes to Eden," Starfleet sold the decommissioned Enterprise-A to the forces of planet Chal.She was then destroyed Klingon ship while in the Corona of Chal's sun. Good book. She died fighting. My favorite version.

I loved Star Trek I read all the books when I was a kid back in the early 70s and I find this video fascinating with all the detail and involved it brings me back to the original book I had way back then called the making of Star Trek how they gave dimensions of the ship and everything like it was real I find the author of this video fascinating in the way he narrates this as though it were real keep in mind it's all just fantasy

Thank you for showing us where the Toilet is on the Enterprise. They never show it in movies or on TV shows. People always wondered where the crew go to the washroom or maybe they just hold it.

Great stuff! Constructive recommendation: you should make the little white lines used to point out features thicker and a different color (maybe green) so they are easier to spot quickly. Often, the video would move on while I was still trying to locate the previous thing being pointed to!

You know I still can't believe that the Constitution Refit Class was built with both dorsal and ventral phaser arrays on the saucer section and we only got to see the usage of the ventral arrays during Star Trek 2:The Wrath of Khan the first time was the forward arrays after Kirk and Spock were able to lower the Reliant's shields and during the Battle of the Mutara Nebula when the Reliant opened fire and damaged the Enterprise's port side torpedo bay the Enterprise returned fire with the port side ventral phaser arrays hitting the Reliant in the aft area of her bridge and we then saw the Enterprise use her forward ventral phaser arrays again when she snuck up on the Reliant from behind destroying the Reliant's port side warp nacelle before it was completely blown off from a photon torpedo.

Just to let the people who made this video know I saw a video on the Constitution Refit Class where it was mentioned that after the Enterprise underwent the 18 month Refit took too long and was resource intensive so instead Starfleet had decommissioned all the original ships of the Constitution Class and built all those ships according to the Refit design specs from what they learned of the Refitted Enterprise and it was said the Enterprise A was originally the U.S.S. Yorktown that was freshly out of the San Francisco Shipyards and was undergoing a shakedown cruise till the Whale Probe incident.

Sounds a lot like the USS Midway fiasco in real life. It was almost compelled rebuilt but it was hugely over budget and had poor seakeeping which required even more modifications. The other ships in the class were not refit in the same manner.. and the navy concentrated on building more super carriers.

I bet the most challenging is figuring out where that huge recreation deck fits in there. In the movie it feels like more than 2 decks tall. Looking forward to part 2 and my other favorite feature, the very busy shuttle/cargo bay.
