So I have decided to revisit the iconic TOS Enterprise 1701 A / Refit from Star Trek, but this time designing each deck one by one. Deck I-U, a fully realized 3D model. Part 2 of 2. This is part two of the Enterprise NCC-1701 A or refit which will mainly cover the secondary hull.
The refit was the most extensive the Enterprise NCC-1701 underwent during her lifetime and involved an almost complete rebuild of the ship. This level of refit had always been part of the mission plan for Constitution-class ships and the Enterprise was just one of several in the class that underwent the procedure, which greatly extended their potential operational life.
The warp engine was upgraded to serve for another 15 years, but other Constitution-refit Constitution-class ships class ships remained in service until the 2290s.
While the structural frame of the ship was on their predecessors but retained, the hull plating was completely renewed.

Refit/1701-A will always be the definitive Enterprise, I think. The artists learned a lot from the 1970's other big franchises inclusion of exterior details like seams in hull plates, and they did a really fantastic job of integrating that with the Enterprise's uniquely graceful lines. I like the enormousness of Picard's Enterprise, and the sharp bows and concave flare of its neck that recalls ocean-going vessels of the late 20th century, but in the end the refit is the best.

The Constitution-Refit is elegant in her simplicity. The newest canon ships demonstrated in Picard and STO are some of the ugliest things i’ve ever seen. The first time i cringed at a design was when i saw the Defiant.

@@mstcrow5429 the Smithsonian did their best to restore the filming model to its original paint scheme. There are no hull lines or excessive “greeblies.”

This is tremendous work! I wrote the SFAM4 book in 1984, that talks about building the AMT 1/537 kit with lighting. I worked with Andy Probert on a lot of the details and functions. Two things: the four recessed panels on top of the Sec Hull are emergency flush vents for Engineering. And as depicted in the McCall concept art (and Probert VIP lounge art) the inboard parts of the nacelles worked together to create a visual "wake", like oars in water. A sequential energy flow that would push the ship, leaving a beautiful violet blue wake behind it. I copied this in my (first ever) lighted 1/537 kit, with sequential lights in the nacelles. The FX were too costly for TMP and dropped (but that's why the grilles face each other).

Paul, something I can't help but wonder: Why include grilles on the outboard panels of the warp drive nacelles, that never seem to light up (until later versions of the show, after Next Generation, where the engines seem to glow all the time, for no good reason)?

@Dr. Technical I just thought of a cool reason, and very Probert-esque: Maybe they manufacture the nacelles as standard, interchangable units, that can be swapped or used on either side, as needed (or between different ship types, for that matter, as on Reliant or Stargazer). Kind of like the turbines on the A-10, which are made deliberately to rotate in the same direction, so engines can be swapped out as needed to repair battle damage.. They look pretty symmetrical, except I guess for the little finials at the stern end.

I am only new here. Impressed by the detail of the animations. Visuals are way better than talking heads and stats. The Battlestar Galactica TOS (Artemis Class) and the RDM (Jupiter Class) for comparison would be really cool.

A full breakdown of every deck of an executor class star destroyer. It would only be like exploring every room in every skyscraper in New York City, it might take a while... The rest of his life probably. Both battlestars are about 2 or 3 times the size of this so just imagine what an undertaking that would be. I do want to see more bigger ships though.

@@DeathBYDesign666 2/3rds of the main body of a Battlestar are FTL drive and and slide mechanism for the flight pods on the Jupiter class. Same applies for the Artemis class (except the slide mechanism). 2/3rds of the flight pods are exposed to vacuum but the launch and repair bays take up the botton section of the pods. The front/head of a Battlestar is pretty much where the crew live and where the CIC resides for both classes.

Thank you for presenting this beautiful ship in such detail! I was a Sophomore in High School when STTMP was released. I immediately fell in love with this design during the beauty shots as Kirk and Scotty do the detailed "fly-by" before boarding her. While I like and appreciate certain aspects of all of the Enterprise designs, from the original design(s) of the classic series through the E of the TNG movies, the refit of the Constitution class Enterprise for STTMP will always be my favorite, and perhaps the most elegant Enterprise design of all...

You’re doing some amazing work here! I’ve never seen anyone cover the pylon before. I’ve definitely never seen a 3D rendering of the interior of a photon torpedo before. That was amazing. Your map of the torpedo deck synched so well with the movie clip that it would be easy to believe that they base the clip on your work rather than the other way around.

First this guy gets some real thumbs up for going this in depth. The part I loved has to be the pool! This looks like it has six chairs and is maybe 10x40 for a crew of how many. This had to be the writers of the books saying wait we did not have a pool yet so here we go, yea 23rd century.

According to Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise, the 1701-A also had a single rear-firing torpedo tube. But since that one reference is the only material to suggest it (and it's not obvious where this rear tube was), it's probably apocryphal.

_Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise_ was never a canon source, I'm afraid. The original Enterprise never demonstrated any rear torpedoes, and on the refit those would be highly noticeable.

Seeing the dorsal in 3D cross section really illustrates how much engineering would be needed for this thin piece to be able to hold the two hulls of the ship together. Even on a normal day the constant physical stresses put on the dorsal would be unimaginable.

You know it's funny we never got to see the torpedo bay of the T.O.S. Enterprise not till Star Trek 2:The Wrath of Khan was the first time we got to see the torpedo bay.

As I noted on you NCC-1701 part 2 video, the refit turned the Warp Core vertical, but it doesn't directly have anything to do with the Impulse Drive. I think the main reason for putting the start of the intermix chamber in the primary hull, as I said, is to consolidate Main Engineering in one place. Plus, the matter for the matter/antimatter reaction is the same for both system, hydrogen..So they can inject the fuel from the same place. The refit also hooked the phasers into the Warp Core, so putting one end of it in the saucer probably helped with that. The Warp Core would be jettisoned if the saucer had to separate anyway. (So it's a non-reversable action) Interestingly, the Enterprise-D and Voyager returned the Warp Core to the secondary hull, and Main Engineering has always been there as well. Maybe Impulse Engines no longer need constant monitoring like they did in the TOS Era. (Or maybe Warp technology is safer to be around)

I think the idea was to be able to shift power from warp to Impulse, or draw one from to the other, at will, @Richard Ryley . The 'deflection crystal' at the top may also serve as kind of capacitor or converter, meanwhile (ala dilithium or Fushigi-no-Umi crystals)

There's no "warp core" here. What you're looking at are essentially plasma conduits, not engines. The warp engines, again, are in the nacelles, just as they were in TOS.

@@Idazmi7 What you're saying is true of the Enterprise-D as well. The blue rings coming from the top and the bottom of the room are just plasma conduits, and two horizontal conduits come out at an angle. The blue ball in the middle is the Warp Core and where the reaction takes place. The refit Enterprise and Enterprise-A use the same design. The structure is smaller and looks different but it's the same thing.

@@richardryley3660 No. There is no warp core on the NCC-1701, whether refit or pre-refit. The entire idea of Warp Cores was a TNG retcon, which means the reaction takes place entirely within the nacelles.

@@Idazmi7 It's still a Warp Core even if it's in the nacelles. A Warp Core is where a matter/antimatter reaction takes place. And the Enterprise has always been powered by matter and antimatter, even from the very beginning. You could argue that it didn't have that name or didn't take on its final form but just because the early writers didn't explain the technology doesn't mean it magically came into existence in the TNG Era. All we can really say is that we can't be sure about the form Warp technology took in the original series. (Because we never saw it)

As I saw in one video, I giggled when he pointed out that the warp core goes through the neck “which is the thinnest part of the ship”. The faintly painted blue line on the outside, is where the warp core is. So, enemies would just have to aim for the blue line and… well ya…. Lol! But she still is my fav Enterprise!

The blue covering is extra armouring, called the strongbacks. Youll see it on top of the secondary hull also and around the warp pylons. Extra protection

@@Halfscreen Be wary of _'Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise'_ - it's not a canon source, and has a lot of info made up by fans that contradict the show pretty hard. As an example, it says the Enterprise has a rear torpedo tube (it doesn't) and that the impulse engines are needed for maneuvering at Warp Speed (they aren't).

It's hard to know what is official and what is fan fiction unless you really know your source materials. It's the same problem I face with SW materials in general, there isn't any real consistency rather it's canon or legend. My goal is to just keep the mistake at a minimum without upsetting someone.

Good info about the 1701-A being renamed from the Yorktown - which was Gene Rodenberry’s original name for what became the Enterprise in ‘66. Fun fact, renaming a ship or boat is bad luck, if it’s done there’s a whole naval procedure that should be followed. 🖖

Yeah we saw what happened to one of the torpedo bays being destroyed was during the Battle of the Mutara Nebula where the U.S.S. Reliant NCC-1864 under the command of Khan opened fire on the Enterprise with it's phaser cannons destroying the port side torpedo bay and killing 2 crewmembers but it's scary to think if the Reliant's aim was higher it would have struck the neck structure instead and if that had happened the Enterprise would have been blown in half causing the ship to explode killing everyone onboard and if that had happened Khan would've had his revenge for the death of his wife.

As most people know, an aircraft carrier is HUGE. And some are 1000 feet long similar to the length of the Enterprise. But, it's the GIRTH of the ENTERPRISE, is what makes the ship very very large. Just the saucer section ALONE must be at least 300 feet tall.

I prefer the refit over the A, but can understand why they would seal off the forward section of the landing bay. Also, regarding the torpedo room look closely at the Klingon K'Tinga bridge in ST: TMP; it's the same set. Also, in ST VI, the officer's ward room where they hosted the Klingon delegation is actually the briefing room of the Enterprise D.

Your Trek cutaway videos just keep on getting better each time! I love the way you've visualised the cargo bay area by "stacking" the various decks to show off the vast open space, it looks great. Whether it makes much sense in terms of starship design is another matter, but that's what we ended up with on screen so we're kinda stuck with it! 😁 I also really like that tweaked torpedo bay design. Can't wait to see your next project - I hope that final clip wasn't meant to indicate that this will be the last! 😮

Only issue I have is the central open area in the torpedo bay. Khan's Reliant cut from the front to the middle docking port on the Port Side, engulfing the entire area and some poor dude in the process. That would've made that entire midsection unusable, yet that had Spock funeral in that chamber. My guess, there 2 separate launch rooms, not combined. I think we see this many times in the movie.

You have done a fantastic job in part 1 I've only just started this second part.. it's so detailed I think we could use it in real life as a design draft to actually build it.. obviously things like the warp drive could be replaced with electric plasma rocket engines and nuke reactors and em drive's as the impulse drive and the various other sci-fi stuff replaced by real world equivalents and other things useful to our actual scientific research needs.. the deflector could even be replaced with something similar like plasma deflection or acoustic sound waves to push stuff.. but at our realistic speeds it's probably not needed but a good chance to test and improve shielding and deflection ect but at least 95% of your main hull is definitely achievable I think.

As much as I love the refit-Constitution, (and I mean its one of my favorite sci fi ships.) I have to admit I'd be a little nervous being in that observation lounge located in that super thin neck area between the saucer section and the engineering hull. I mean, it's beautiful don't get me wrong but I'd definitely maybe rather be in an observation lounge on the Excelsior's neck or something. lol Great work on this by the way. So many of these rooms never got to be shown on screen so its really fantastic to see so much of this iconic ship that we never see. Kinda like that infamous aquatic deck that was supposedly on the Enterprise D. Like I've always wanted to see the botanical section since its featured so prominently in shots of the exterior. Also, so there really was a swimming pool!

These ships are the beautyfull ships of Star Trek , i love the Design its timeless and elegant. I also prefer the interior of the 1701 refit . The Iconic Bridge Design and the stylish Crew Quarters . The Recreation Deck is impressive.

16:09 I think there might be a mechanical roll down door in the ceiling that can physically separate the cargo bay from the hanger deck. It was never shown on screen, but there is a framework for it. In drydock, it would be up so the cargo could be moved In easily. I have also read that the cargo bay had retracting floors to break up the open space.

One thing I don't get about that part where they show the shuttle Bay they have a shuttle from the Enterprise D onboard which is kinda weird as the Enterprise A didn't have a shuttlecraft like that.

That was Paramount cutting the movie budget and saving money by drawing on the television division resources. That was a common practice dating back to ST II which used props from other Paramount sci-fi TV franchises such as Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.

I much prefer the layout of the shuttle bay for the refit. Having the cargo bay and shuttle open together gives it an open concept and epicness.

Really nice work. Though I would like to point out that the shuttle craft model being used is the Type 6 shuttle craft, not the Type 5 which was used in STV. Type 6 shuttles didn't exsist until the later seasons of ST: TNG. Again, very good work. Also, the first bridge of the 1701-A was a reuse of the bridge from ST2. The bridge was later changed in STV, and then it was changed again in STVI. Main engineering was seen only three times. ST:TMP and STII:TWOK used the same engineering section, though some changes were made in STII. Main engineering was never seen again until STVI, where it received a major overhaul, using a redress of the engineering set from ST:TNG.

I gotta complement your wonderful attention to detail and work here. I'm curious where shield generators as opposed to forcefield generators, but I've looks at some schematics and that's a confused issue. Standalone generators as opposed to those in the bulkheads I would assume constitute shield generators from a "raise shields" standpoint.

For me this was always the weakness of the federation ships. All vital systems and equipment are located in this and the neck. The parts of the ship that barely, if at all, offer any buffer zones around it. Any hit to the hull in this region will directly damage these systems. It would be more wise to place them in the middle of the dish section, with the living quarters and storage around them.

The levels ("floors") are lettered. The port (2) and starboard (presumably 1) torpedo bays are numbered. In the movies, what's definitely missing from commands to launch torpedoes are also specifying from which bay 1, 2, or both (e.g., "fire torpedo, bay 2").

You know it's sad that we never got to see the secondary hull mounted phasers used only the ones on the saucer section though the only time we got to see a Constitution Class Starship use it's secondary hull mounted phasers was the U.S.S. Defiant in the Star Trek:Enterprise 2 part episode 'In a Mirror Darkly' along with it's aft mounted photon torpedoes even though with the picture of the ships master systems display we can't see anything about the aft torpedo launchers.

Pretty sure the Enterprise D used it’s secondary hull ventral phaser once. It was for some kind of space drilling I seem to recall.

@@calvinnickel9995 Actually the Enterprise D used the phasers mounted on her saucer section for drilling the first time was when they were mounting a rescue mission on the home planet of the late Natasha Yar,the second time was when Data met his mother who he later discovered was a Soong type android and the third time was when they met that inventor who was pretending to be a historian.

I've never believed this ship was truly a "refit" of the original -- SO much is changed, even basic structural dimensions, that it would be easier to build it from scratch. I think Starfleet kept the commissioning plaque from the first 1701, tore the ship apart, built a new one around the plaque, and called it a "refit" for PR reasons.

The other big difference between the 1701 Refit and the 1701-A is that the A had a Forward Observation Lounge which was located at the very front of the saucer section. Unfortunately, for budgetary reasons, the production team was not able to add windows to this part of the saucer, but according to Michael Okuda, that was the plan to show the location of the room on the model.

That forward observation lounge in the front of the Enterprise A's saucer section kinda reminded me of 10 forward on the Enterprise D as like 10 forward the Enterprise A's forward observation lounge had what looked like it's own bar and the one touching thing I liked about that room was the old style ships wheel at the center of the room.

I like that you're able to do the proper 3-d thing on these models. Now we can see why things are shaped the way they are. I know the whole thing is imaginary, but you make her feel real, and the 3-d helps. To be fair, I liked the more open secondary hull as seen in TMP more than the enclosed shuttlebay, but things change. They can change and, as much right as they have to do that, I have at least as much right not to like it. :P Hang on, in the hanger, seen, is a shuttlecraft that is NOT the Galileo type. It is the same as the one Spock arrived upon. Right there. The "galileo type" that you specify was not needed until V. "IRL, a shuttlecraft is not just any old boat. It is a boat, meant to move people from one place to another. A ship to a base or a planet. Over and over. Until the job is done. That's the shuttle part. That's what the word means. There are ships' boats that are not meant as simply shuttles. They have other jobs to do first. Sub hunting or captains' yachting or the officer's official fishing vessel. What? some of these boats might also be shuttles? Fie on you for even saying that! In Star trek itself, TMP, we see "shuttle craft" not often used. Right there in that big hanger cargo thing that seems to take up a lot of the secondary hull. Look again! We see a "travel pod" used once, and we see several "work bees." in various configurations. Spock does arrive on one of these shuttles riding a "warp sled" later. It does not even use the : shuttlebay. Just an airlock to do its job. My point is proven in canon.
