Star Trek Nemesis: Revisiting The Worst Star Trek Movie Ever Made

Star Trek Insurrection was a disappointing entry for the Next Generation crew - both creatively and at the box office. It made $117 million worldwide, which was only about $30 million less than Star Trek: First Contact, but the budget was pretty hefty, thanks mainly to salaries, with the film costing $70 million, making it the most expensive Trek movie to date. While the studio likely eeked out a profit once it hit home video, the margins were slim. Thus, Paramount, which still hoped the franchise could bounce back in another movie, opted to shake things up for the ambitious Star Trek Nemesis. Yet, all the pricey talent they went after, at the sacrifice of some of TNG’s key creative players, could save the movie from being an all out disaster that ended the Next Generation crews adventures on the big screen for good.

I feel obliged to spare people one of my disappointments by telling new watchers that there will be no fleet battle. As great as some of the space fight footage is, they DO imply that we may see a fleet battle, so I was expecting a lot more ships to show up and put the opening of FC to shame. Also the Romulan ships look cool, but overly similar to Klingon, and I’ve always wanted to see a D’deridex class on the big screen.

Not just the director, the writers acted like they had no idea about TNG Trek. Why was Worf back in Starfleet? Wasn't he supposed to be an ambassador for the Klingon home world or something? (At the end of DS9) And did they just forget about Lore? Why else would they throw B-4 together so quickly? Gee, what could go wrong? And the story made no sense. Why was Shinzon so pissed at Earth? We didn't enslaved him. You'd think he'd want revenge on Romulus.

Not addressing Worf's story from DS9 disturbed me most. And shoe-horning in a new android was as tiresome as Star Trek Picard's habit of continually resurrecting Data. The problem with all of the TNG movies is that they all rehash STII: TWOK. Every premise of these movies has someone wanting revenge, someone having a gripe, and a supposed space battle. None of the movies had anything to offer for the big screen. Each TNG movie was a made for television movie. I bet when you first watched them, your thumb was twitching for the remote for the commercial break. I am glad they never brought DS9 to the big screen, although with their writers, it would have be spectacular but not Enterprise Trek. Insurrection was very two-dimensional in every sense of the term. I didn't feel any sense of action, urgency, or interest for this movie. The problem with TNG Trek is that they have a talent of hiring great actors with a poor script or having a decent script but getting sub-par actors. And character development in TNG universe sucks. And my final analysis/comment, TNG was the only series that said, Goodbye three times: All Good Things, Nemesis, Picard. Like seriously, retire and move on.

WAS the worst movie. ST: Beyond really showed us just how asinine the writers can get with the Kelvin timeline.

What made this movie so ultimately horrible??? The only thing I see that is so bad is the solid blue at the end of the movie. I am no director but I think it would have looked much better as a star fiend rather than solid blue.

Insurrection was a huge let down which effected Nemesis. If Nemesis would have come after First Contact, it may have done better but they should have quit on a high note which was First Contact.

I don’t think Nemesis is a disaster. It clearly has a more theatrical feel than Insurrection. But Nemesis was plagued with the problem of Trek in the early 2000’s which was “playing it safe”. Theatrical films need to push changes and not just end the same way it started.

Insurrection had Data exploring what fun and being a kid meant, gradually learning how to interpret emotions over 3 movies. Now in Nemesis Data is a portrayed as a wise sage and suddenly he’s sacrificed himself. It never felt right, and it broke our hearts. Also Data’s inspiring speech of “B4 could never be me” while the ending with B4 implies the opposite 🤦‍♂️

One of the dumbest decisions the film made was to make young Picard bald. He wasn't. They acted as if the viewers would be too dumb to understand bald people don't start bald

In episodes of the tv show you see younger Picard with hair, and in this movie they have an absolutely hysterical image of bald Tom Hardy dressed up as a college aged Picard.

B4 should have been Lore posing as a random android. Missed opportunity IMO. I also think Data's death needed MORE of reason for the crew to survive. Like perhaps the Romulan Thalaron Weapon had some kind of positronic design that Data throwing himself into the core would destroy it. I also wonder if this film had a Spring release in 2003 away from other big titles what it could have done. It has issues but certainly not unwatchable.

Lore is more of a "Nemesis" than Shinzon, so the movie title would've made sense.

I'm a die hard supporter of the first three Next Gen movies (I love them all, not just "like" them) but Nemesis was so bad. It felt wrong, everything from the digital grading applied to certain scenes, to the plot, writing choices, etc...Just it was so deflating to have thought this was the last I'd see this cast I literally grew up with as a kid.

I'm an old school die-hard Trekkie, but Insurrection put me to sleep. Fearing that I might've been a harsh critic, I watched it again recently only to force myself to stay awake. While Nemesis was by no means the crowning jewel of the franchise, I've stayed awake through multiple viewings of it.

I didn't think Tom Hardy looked anything like a younger Patrick Stewart in Nemesis and the whole premise just collapses when we get the big reveal. It was also painfully obvious that the director had no idea about the characters or the star trek universe and the thought was none of that matters as we are appealing to a wider audience who won't know when we mess with the show's continuity. This was a big mistake.

Part of the reason why Nemesis ended up way it is because Brent Spiner and John Logan planned on Nemesis being part 1 of an epic conclusion to that era of Star Trek. Part 2 would've brought together the cast of TNG, DS9 and Voyager and possibly bring back Data but of course the box-office returns of Nemesis killed that project.

Honestly, I never did want a Voyager movie. Was glad when the series finally ended. Didn't even watch any re-runs after that. As for DS9, I was never really a fan of that show. Too much Quark and the bar scenes. Next Generation was made for movies. Just that they didn't always come out as good as they could have. First Contact was by far the best (in my opinion). Would have liked to see a part 2 of Nemisis that would have wrapped up the series.

@@my3dviews You're probably reflective of much of the target audience at the time, which is why neither of those got movies. Another thought I had was not everyone actually saw those two shows when they first ran because some of us didn't get them on our local station and didn't have cable. TNG was syndicated and got on TVs everywhere even after it ended. Voyager meanwhile was on UPN only. A friend had to record the show on video tapes and deliver to us every week. DS9 disappeared from our CBS station after S3.

My personal opinion on this one every time is it was written as pretty decent episodic bits. It would have made a couple of good episodes maybe pulled apart a little bit. Some of these plots as b-plots, or a-plots, with other b plots might have been enjoyable. The Star Trek fandom was thirsty for anything, so you're going to be able to make a decent box office just on fandom.
