In the next episode, Data's eyes will light up and begin playing a holographic message... "Admiral Picard. Years ago, you served my father in the Dominion War. Now he begs you to help him in his struggle against the Founders. I regret that I am unable to present my father's request to you in person, but my ship has fallen under attack and I'm afraid my mission to bring you to M'Talas Prime has failed. I have placed information vital to the survival of the Federation into the memory systems of this Soong-type android. My father will know how to retrieve it. You must see this android safely delivered to him on M'Talas Prime. This is our most desperate hour. Help me, Jean-Luc Picard... you're my only hope."
Geordie upgrades him with strobe lights and quadraphonic sound At this point they should just turn him into inspector gadget and have new upgrades every episode for laughs
I spent last few weeks re-watching DS9. It's incredible how 30 year old tv show has CGI and special effects made so good they still beat anything we watch on tv today. Reminded me of time when people did things with passion and heart.
I recently watched a short documentary about the filming process for the Enterprise D model in TNG and it blew my mind how much talent, skill, and artistry went into creating the shots I had taken for granted over the run of the show. Star Trek is sorely missing that passion and attention to detail now and it's very sad.
@@Vpaid I also watched some old videos and documentaries. Some are part of Movie Magic (90s tv show). Here is one about making DS9 special effects: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-boQDdkKMop0.html Crazy to think how many hard working hours they spent just to make few seconds of video material.
There was a big mistake in the ships museum scene. It looked like a trekkie's Eaglemoss collection where everything is about the same size but actually the ships should differ greatly in size. The HMS bounty is around 28 meters long while the USD Titan is 560 meters long according to the production designer. It's also unlikely the cloaking device would work on such a big ship.
Regarding the cloaking device - the Voyager crew detected a 100 year old Klingon battlecruiser through its cloak in the Delta Quadrant. Commander Seven probably forgot that. The best part of this episode was Shaw geeking out over Geordi. If only Shaw knew that Geordi yelled at Scotty for being an annoying old man. Scotty. Montgomery Scott. Engineering LEGEND. Picard has to pull Geordi into his office to tell him to be nice to an old man. Because Geordi is a grade-A asshat to Scotty. Shaw wouldn’t love Geordi so much if he knew how horrible he’d been to Scotty. I didn’t care about any of Geordi’s stuff in this episode. Plus, putting Lore into the Gollum makes zero sense. Data and Lal wanted to be human. Soong wanted to be a Gollum. Lore wanted to be an android. He wanted to “perfect” the Borg by making them fully synthetic. Lore would HATE being in a human Gollum body. Also, what about Soji and Dahj and all those other sexy gold androids who lived in that house in California from season 1? What about them? They were all cloned from Data’s brain stem juice, so why not them? And what happened to Lore’s actual body? Why wasn’t that in the Daystrom Jupiter Station? Finally, a red door (in Irish mythology) is believed to protect a house’s occupants from…GHOSTS So as Jack keeps seeing a red door we can conclude that: The villain this season is THAT GHOST WHO “MERGED” with Beverley. But for serious, Jack is a clone of Locutus. Vadic wants to get the nanoprobes out of Picard’s corpse to activate Jack’s Borgitude so that the changelings can help the Borg assimilate the Federation. And then Michael Burnham will come back through a portal and save them all and this will tie in to the end of DSC. And Pike will be there. And Shatner as Kirk. Everyone fights the Borg. And we all die a little inside.
20 years ago, if you had told me there would be new Star Trek and Star Wars running at the same time, I would be so excited. Now, it's more of a, as you put it, "we all die a little inside."
Tho keep in mind that scotty was kinda in the way when geordi was working, tho in that episode geordi did apologize and were on good terms. Let’s be honest here, you’d probably be annoyed in a similar situation.
@@SqualidsargeStudios I would if I was as tightly strung as Geordi 😂 tbf tho Geordi could have assigned someone to work with Scotty (although I doubt the latter would have accepted a back seat role lol)
Your missing the part where Evil Jack is seduced by Kirk and turned good again. Then everyone in the cast cries for the last 15 minutes of the episode.
basically third season is the same as first season. lot of memberberries and small groups of defeated enimies causing troubles (first romulans, now changelings). also i think they didn't know at the beginning what they were really doing with the main villan. so they changed it to be a changeling for some reasons. why she cut her hand off (under pain) and talking that way when she easily can switch forms?
I commented before that they need to get their heads out of their backsides and hire someone like NN to help them get things right. But someone commented elsewhere that if you have to keep making up your own “head canon” to explain things then it’s not worth it… the writers have failed.
In the special effects? I agree, when the ship was shown near the moon, the parallax movement made it look more like a spherical asteroid. But in their defense, Star Trek has always had this problem, especially in the opening sequence in Voyager.
I don't really hold it against the episode for the Moriarty stuff because I have long given up watching star trek trailers. And without caring about the trailers or having expectations of the show, the moriaty stuff is actually a nice call back. And as for riker not remembering the song that's totally normal. People sometimes don't remember stuff at the moment and it bugs them for days until they finally can remember again. I liked this espidose but now thinking back, it does have a lot of problems. So I was thinking to myself that my standards have actually lowered because of the previous seasons. So now anything that's not immediately offensive to me is now considered good. And the memberberries did get me to react to this episode a lot more fondly than I would have.
My prediction is; The Titan will get destroyed in the last battle, and they rush back to the museum shipyard to find the strongest ship to fight whatever the main last-bad-guy-ship is. (I can already see them debating what ship to use; Worf will want the Defieant, 7 of 9 will recommend the Voyager) That's when Jordi reveals the restored Enterprise D, which he had raised from Veridian III; it's going to be the original Enterprise D in the last fight scene... The crew of the Titan will take new posts on the Enterprise D... the original TNG crew will take their old posts back. Only Jordi could have rebuilt Enterprise D, maybe he found out later the the Duras sisters had hacked his visor and always felt guilty for the destruction of the Enterpise D, so he made his life work to be stranded in a museum salvage yard to just rebuild the original Enterprise D. I have no clue if that's going to be the ending; I only watch Picard episodes after Nitpicking Nerd reviews them.
Ditto that last point! Though I blame him for giving me the idea of watching them after episode 3. ;) I love your idea! On a practical level it seems unlikely based on the cost of building the sets. Even just the bridge would be a big expensive job. But who knows!!
"Only Jordi could have rebuilt Enterprise D, maybe he found out later the the Duras sisters had hacked his visor and always felt guilty for the destruction of the Enterpise D, so he made his life work to be stranded in a museum salvage yard to just rebuild the original Enterprise D." This is really good. The set does not need to be the same. The bridge was smashed Enterprise D was smashed. Maybe it would be cheaper to have a bridge in disarray but is mostly operational.
One thing that really bothers me about this season is that the TNG reunion they're trying to do is based on a bunch of bad coincidences. Someone from Starfleet is sent over to talk to them and it just _happens_ to be Ro Laren. The person working at the ship museum just _happens_ to be Geordi. The Daystrom vault they break into just _happens_ to have B4. It actually makes sense that Worf was investigating the terrorist attacks in the early episodes because he was a big player in the Dominion War, so the coincidence is actually in the other direction. The person in Starfleet Intelligence he's communicating with just _happens_ to be Raffi. I'd say it's a big coincidence that Jack and Beverly are at the center of all this, but I'll reserve judgement until that's fully explained.
I was wondering why the Changelings not acting like Changelings, the bucket was Odo's thing,no other Changeling used them, they aren't reverting back to their true forms when their together 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤷🏽♂️😒
He has to maintain the most famous ships in the fleet. I'm certain that's also not his only job there either as he is in charge of a massive star base that makes DS9 look like a shuttle. As was said in the episode he is in constant contact with star fleet command making recommendations to ship modifications and fleet deployments. What I didn't like is that instead of being the chipper enthusiastic engineer he was grumpy and disrespectful. I guess that can come with old age though.
@@Bitchslapper316 And being a parent! That changes Everything! And explains why he was so tart with Picard. But yeah, I do miss the 'ole Geordi! Perhaps with Data mark III in tow (along with Lore, B4 and god knows who else!) the old Geordi will resurface somewhat. But that said, Lore is going to be an obvious problem! Just a shame we couldn't have Data III back as just Data! But I guess Lore probably has a part to play in increasing the stakes!
He took the job to restore the Enterprise-D in hanger 12. They will use it to avoid the transponder web of the modern ships; that's how we'll get the bridge scene with the old gang all together, in the last episode.
thank you for being pretty much the only reviewer to not suffer from chronic memberberry poisoning! this season taught me that even super duper hardcore fans like RMB like very different things about the show, all those stupid details don't really seem to matter to them too much. But for me they do and they all detract from the star trek feeling I get when watching the "older" stuff. the feeling wasn't really there to begin with because the vibe is completely non-star trek. but hey, the orville people still get it, they have the feeling just right
I can recommend two other review channels who absolutely hate Episode 6 (and they are fans of Old Trek's optimism and quality): Mollie and the Old Man; Eddie Steak.
It seems like memberberries i n passing, as in if someone had merely googled about TNG but doesn't have all the things. Like how neither his daughter nor Geordi himself remembers he was a Pilot too.
As it turns out, they used Moriarty as season click-bait / memberberry. There were so many better ways they could have used him. Oh well. Par for the course.
I liked the Moriarty episodes it's just given the small 10 episode run of this season any appearance from him would be kind of distracting from the bigger picture
Oh and going back to the Episode and memories... why doesn't Geordi (or literally anyone the Titan) remember Geordi was a pilot before he became an engineer? It's not like humans in Starfleet can only be good at one thing after all. Takes one really right out of the show.
What do you mean "don't remember"? What was he supposed to do? Board the titan and hop into the helm for no reason at all? Also Riker was the better pilot, Geordie has said it himself. Are you also upset that Riker didn't hop in the helm controls instead of commanding the ship?
@@Bitchslapper316 Errrm... Remember as in his daughter doesn't mention it when she talks only about him and engineering in past episodes. Him not mentioning it when it's, for some reason, a teased point of issue between him and his daughter. IE Pilot skills and Engineering skills are not mutually exclusive. It's not that hard.
@@Bitchslapper316 *sigh* A single mention would be enough, for someone to recognize that it's not directly opposed to being an Engineer. As said it's not that hard. Something in the line of (but maybe they keep that for the return of the D) Geordi simply mentioning that he started as a Pilot himself. It feels like artificial tension with Geordie and Daughter 1 vs 2. Same nonsense as with Riker and Picard about to hide or attack aftermath. It's silly.
The main issue with Picard is they didn't bring back Ronald Moore and Rick Berman. Do that and add NN as story consultant and you have a proper sequel.
I think that when the fans clamored for a series that was more in line with classic Trek, the writers decided to load it up with old recycled plot elements and member berries.
more i follow these reviews more i think Matalas just mixed 3 different Star Trek screenplays movies together in these bleak, gloomy Kurtzman poisoned Federation (that is not clever in nuances like DS9) where everything is an intrigue/conspiration like Games of Thrones...I despise this product and i really don't understand why since Robert Burnett opened the gates...many youtubers praised this season as a dignified sequel and a resurgence for the old Star Trek Generations
It is undeniable that the writers don't understand and/or hate the TNG characters. It's equally obvious that RMB (and others) are compromised in some way.
Yeah, how could Burnett shill this so hard? Or Computing Forever or Nerdrodic? It's more garbage Star Trek. I'm sure it's better if you watch all the episodes in a row. But it's still a turd, it's still nu-Trek. I can only assume that Matalas is Burnett's friend, so he has to push it a little and play nice. Maybe?
Nitpicking Nerd it would appear is the only one that is calling out the bullshit on this series. Others including Robert Meyer Burnett, Nerdrotic, The Critical Drinker to name a few seem to really enjoy this tripe. It’s better than other Star Trek of recent times but is it really deserving of all the praise it’s getting? Keep it up!
I found the episode dragged a lot in places. But there were some nice moments too. I actually liked the Moriarty stuff, a good way to make sure Riker is Riker and not a changeling.
They don't have enough story, so it keeps stopping for these heart-to-hearts in the hollodeck. But I am finding it too much like a soap-opera. I would have enjoyed this more without those scenes.
@@NitpickingNerd well, of course that was the reason, also, to let Riker know that it was Data who was the security ai. you really overreacted in your video. The idea of having these multiple personalities is great. When data needs to lie , he lets lore take over. When he needs to be compassionate , he lets Lul take over.. etc etc.
I thought it was so bad. Especially the music. Visually it looked that it was so loud that it caused an earthquake in that room. But somehow they are not deaf....
@@Mr.Edd3905it’s a two hour movie at best but every thing now has to be a 10 episode series when in reality a series was 18 plus episodes ie X-Files, Star Trek of old, Babylon 5, Knight Rider, A-Team etc.
Do...Do they think that it was the Irumodic Syndrome that gave Picard visions in All Good Things? FFS Q straight up tells Picard he's the one letting him travel through time to see what's going on. Or worse, are they combining the waking dreams he had of still being part of the collective with the visions from the Irumadic Syndrome. Also I can't remember if it was brought up in Season 1 but wouldn't Picard's time on the Ba'ku planet healed a lot of those issues?
Blessed be the nitpicking nerds, thanks for watching and reviewing this show, so I don't have to waste my limited storage to remember new old stock Member Berries.
Why is Jack Crusher wearing a Starfleet badge? He is "a wanted criminal on numerous Federation and non-Federation worlds". Do all main characters in Secret Hideout Trek have immunity against prosecution no matter what crimes they commit, including murder?
I unfortunately agree with the theory they made summon the Borg again using Picard's carcass to find borg technology to say that Locutus is summoning them.. why the Changelings want the Borg to help wipe the Federation out is stupid because the Dominion nearly succeeded conquering the Alpha and Beta quadrants by themselves, let alone just the Federation which is only one faction
@@NitpickingNerd Could maybe fixed it if they used the cloak from the Defiant, and explain the cloak being there as something that was overlooked by the romulans when there home world was destoryed.
there was a moment on the show which explained that their ship kept getting found cuz all Federation ships are now linked together... later that made me think what if Locutus would be used to take over the entire fleet's interlinked ships
S3 tries soo hard it smells desperate. But it's funny at least. Also its just a nitpick, but the Daystrom vault looks like someone took a model kit of Jupiter station, left in its plastic frame, and glued two Pathfinder arrays to it's sides. Do you really need hypersubspace communications on a super-secret glorified warehouse? :)
Saving money on models . Just like reusing the bar set over and over even when it makes no sense . They better be saving it for a good cause in the season finale
did you notice Geordi's daughter mention crashing speeders when talking to him? i immediately thought that was a strange Star Wars reference and then when Data projects the picture of Picard and repeats his name i was reminded of R2-D2 is playing the Leia "help me Obiwan Kenobi you're my only hope" for Luke
Kirk on the A and also Archer (whos body was also on the station) on the NX01 refit will join Janeway and 7 on the Voyager with the TNG crew on the D, Sulu on the Excelsior and Worf on the Defiant for the final fight against Locutus.... maybe`?
Robert Meyer Burnett kinda spoiled it that it is the real Troi at the end of the ep. As for your coincidence they kidnapped Troi...Riker's wife... Troi is as much an ally/friend to Picard as anybody else, it just so happens she is of particular significance to Riker... why was she just conveniently waiting for him on the ship? Who knows by 'reasons'.
And if they were scouring for any old friends of Picard, why didn't they think of Geordi??? Makes no sense! The fleet museum would be the first place to look for Picard!
I was annoyed, too, when the crew beamed Geordi and his daughter without even checking if he or she is a Changelling or not. But, considering that Geordi has a eye implant, Changellings cannot change into that. I mean, of course they can turn into non-organic objects, but it would be just an object ad not a working device, basically a Changlling Geordi would be truly blind. Unfortunately, there is not a single word of this mentioned in the episode...
Trek went from " we have no clue what Star Trek even is" to " it's all just pointless references and cameos" with his season...I honestly can't decide which is worse
Not to defend the episode entirely, but the part with Riker remembering the song. I was ok with that because he was hearing the notes. He could easily forget the song in a moment, but if he hears notes from the song it could jog his memory. I have had this happen to myself, completely forgetting a song but hearing just a couple of notes and it almost feels like a jolt and you suddenly remember the entire thing.
I don't think it would be to summon the Borg because according to the last season, the Borg are not a threat to the Federation because of Agnes is the Borg Queen. Must be something else.
10:40 ... Audio-Visual cues can unlock memories that we considered forgotten until then ... Some of the notes were literally being played ... whereas in the Nemesis scene he had no help remembering.
It's really nothing but al lot of nostalgia. The best story is Geordie re-uniting with his daughter because she was successful in the action piece. But even that is contrived, since Geordie wouldn't be so risk adverse in the Star Trek world (Crusher had her son on the Enterprise, Picard and Jack, Sisko and Jake, etc...), but even being successful on one mission should hardly change one's mind about taking risks. I don't understand why people want nostalgia. If you like TNG, then why not do TNG? Do you really like TNG? Or did you just enjoy it once when you were young, and no longer want to see it? Instead you just want to see something you enjoyed when you were young?
You do have a point about Moriarty. They did use him as a major selling point for this season. Did you notice it was Data's voice that said "thank you" when Worf provided their "credentials"? I think Geordie probably has PTSD over the synth attack. This explains why he's transferred to a relatively sleepy and quiet life in an unremarkable part of the galaxy and is reticent to help his old crew.
Jack inheriting Irumodic Syndrome doesn't mean shit because Irumodic Syndrom only affects people of a certain maturity, and Jack is still very young, way younger than Picard was in season 1 of TNG. Irumodic Syndrome means a deterioration of the synaptic pathways... while it can manifest as visions, the person would also basically be like space dementia, stumbling and forgetting things.
Locutus was made specifically made to assimilate the Federation. But the Borg have assimilated thousands of species, trillions of people. So Locutus wouldn't be that important to the rest of the Collective. We see the Borg fight and assimilate aliens much more advanced than the Federation, and they have thousands of ships. Also, was Geordie's space station also unmanned? It's gigantic space station and Geordie and his daughter are the only two people on it? No one else was there? They didn't have to worry about anyone else reporting them to Starfleet?
The bar has been set to low by Discovery and s1 and s2 of Picard that I’m just happy that the s3 of Picard just seems to be made by people who mostly like Star Trek and it’s history and don’t hate the audience / fans. The animosity of season 1 is real.
Riker remembering isnt far fetch. Like multiple choice questions on a test or the old game show Name That Tune with hints. Riker got a hint and remembered. Compared to Discovery and all the years of bad Trek this is very satisfying. Flawed but it's satisfying.
It would be nice if the Borg were integrated into this story like you suggest. This is supposed to be the Undiscovered Country for the TNG crew. So, just like the Klingons were in Undiscovered Country, the Borg should be in Picard season 3.
Clocked technology can't be used within tachyon field. If you remember Nemesis they explained there is a tachyon network which can detect cloaked ships, at least older generation. There is also episode of TNG where they stop Romulans by making similar sensor network between multiple ships.
oh my god, thank you nitpickingnerd !! I too thought Geordi was acting like a coward !! Assuming Picard didn't fumble his words, after learning a disaster is on the horizon, how the hell can Geordi still be worried about his career and only his family ?! I''d go as far to say Geordi got the TLJ Luke Skywalker treatment. and I would have thought seawater would have ruined the Bird of Prey, because you know, it was sinking. I hope the Borg aren't coming back in the final episodes.
it's like if you go to a soldier and tell him there's a nuke going to blow up the entire country but you can stop it with his help , and he says naaaa my family is more important so I'm going to stay with them . it literally makes no sense and the opposite of reason
The HMS Bounty had a working cloak... fine... but it's based on OLD Klingon technology... by the time Voyager was around, they had found a way to penetrate or track an old Klingon ship at cloak
Kestra will show up with her previously mentioned, but not shown, friend Captain Rupert Crandall, whom is really a resurrected James T. Kirk or Jonathan Archer.
You wonder why every episode contractics what happened in past shows or films. There is only 1 reason: The writers have NOT WATCHED STAR TREK. They saw clips on youtube, but never botehred to actually watch the show. and I don't care if Terry was an assistant, he was going around getting coffee and muffins and that doesn't make you into a writer. How can the Daytrom Station be an experimental weapon facility and have Picar'd body in their facility? His corpse is a weapon?? HOW? if they turn Picard into a Borg, wouldn't he still die from his disease immediately? Oh, but he will be miraculously cured (or they will forget about it entirely, even if they mentioned it multiple times in the series). This would be the most memberberry/rediculous/bullshit plot ever. Besides, haven't they retconned the BORG in the last season and have turned them into friends ever since Jurati became the Borg Queen for 4 CENTURIES? The only memberberry that actually did something for me was when 7 saw the Voyager ship and they played the tune briefly but otehr than that, Star Trek is truely dead.
@@TheLadsBandLive I can see it now, the final scene of the first episode: MORIARTY: But, Picard, why would you associate with me? PICARD: You're a hologram, and I am a synth. Imagine the unique adventures we could have together. MORIARTY: Point taken. In fact, I feel as though the door to a whole new world has just opened. PICARD: To paraphrase an old movie, "Professor Moriarty, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."
Seems pretty clear now the fleet is going to be wiped out/incapacitate at Frontier day. Will the fleet at the museum save the day in an Avengers style team up lead by the D? Also pretty clear that we are going to see Locutus. Will Shaw give purpose to his being saved at Wolf 359 by being the one to kill him?
The Operative: “I'm sorry. If your quarry goes to ground, leave no ground to go to.” - Serenity (2005). Blame Picard (for everything) even a genetic disease that he has no control over. Starfleet ships are attacking without hailing first? The cloaking device is like Wonder Woman’s invisible jet in the Super Friends. "Excellent use of the word burgle." Riker (A stupid unnecessary line.). "An AI that thinks and adapts." (A stupid unnecessary line.). Data should have been a cyborg Soong. It would have made more sense for Riker to stay inside the vault where the guards must come through the door. It would have been smart for the Changelings to make Riker think he was rescued by copying Worf and Raffi. I think Levar Burton (Geordi) did the best acting in this series so far. Picard may get his human body back in the end
They keep explaining the gift of ageing but everyone seems to have forgotten data’s mom who aged and would die. Maybe she’s dead by now and they used that technology?
I don't think those clicky creatures are changelings. I think they are a dominion slave race, Breen/Jem Hadar style. And it was one of them who shot the other one on her order. Vadik didn't shoot. I think Vadik = Bad Vedic
Clearly they are going to say that not all changelings were cured of the disease/virus, some were locked in their forms. That's why I think they have to communicate. They can't link. She hinted that soon they will be able to link again.
nHmmm...I still cant decide if I like this season, or if its just "nostalgia". Seeing the USS Voyager was very cool, but I personally relieved that Moriarty was restricted to a small appearance. I wasn't looking forward to his return.
The problem is that Star Trek never cared about inconsistencies and plot holes. When TNG came out, it was inconsistent with TOS, including how Klingons looked and acted. Data himself was vastly inferior to many humanoid androids in TOS.
@@OffendingTheOffendable Yet he's right. Consistency was never a Star Trek thing. THe best episode (for me) was the inner light, and what about coming back to a place after a lifetime somewhere else? You would barely remember the names of who's around you, let alone Starfleet rules and regulations, yet it's ok, Picard keeps on like nothing happened.
The thing about season 3 is that they cannot ignore the previous seasons but there is some admission to a soft reboot, so they can choose some elements to keep same and some they can sort of retcon. Altan Soong have access to all the androids because once the war with the Synths was done he probably became allies with the Federation again and got access to those things, who knows.
It's not well explained, but I guess Soong wasn't working on this new Data untill after the synth ban was lifted. He would then have had access to B4. After he died, all his research was moved to the Daystrom station (for some reason).
Agreed. And they had people (including myself) speculating what interesting plot-line it could be with this character. So much potential -- just wasted.
You raise a lot of things that I thought, but one more thing is that I don't like how the show states things bluntly when a fan got it without the prompt. As Data switches between personalities, for example, I don't need "I am Lore". Just the sinister grin would do. Switching between these gestures would make it obvious enough to me, that's fine. But we have to have it spelled out for us.
Yeah i was going to mention that line was unnecessary .. at least for most fans since his acting was good it wqs obvious even when he became B4 but maybe they want to make sure everyone watching gets it and not just hardcore fans . It should have been another character saying Lore after he started smiling in a creepy way
Moriarty would have been a much more interesting villain than whatever is going on with Vadic's hand. You bring up a lot of really good points about faulty logic in this episode. At 8:20 Worf and Raffi beam onto the Titan... but where do they come from? Did the Titan go to M'Talas to get them? Did they leave the La Sirena there or abandon it in space to board the Titan?
I personally think that morriarty actually being the security system would be so much better. Super intelligent and insidious defence system. Give starfleet an exuce to keep him around since its sentient life.
I knew it was a long shot (especially knowing the actor only had one day of shooting), but I was really hoping the crew would have found themselves trapped within a holosequence created by Moriarty -- wiping away all of Nu Trek. Unfortunately, Nu Trek gets propelled some more, desecrating more TNG characters within the ridiculousness of Season 3.
@@mryellow6918 Yeah, I had a similar thought. It would make sense for Moriarty to be a holographic security system and a cool twist for the character. Instead he's like... a flintlock pistol-wielding fever dream of Data's? What?
On the whistled melody and Riker not knowing it: There is a tangible difference between consciously trying to remember a tune decades in the past on the fly and hearing fragments of that same melody suddenly reminding you of how it goes and 'unlocking' memories about it. I think we all have had similar experiences with songs where we can even sing along the lyrics once we listen to it, despite not being able to remember the words if we have to out of the bkuenajd without the music. It's different kinds of memories and thr whole scene embodies that to me. I particularly liked that aspect of the scene because it felt like a sliver of Data recognized Riker and tried to communicate on a different level, - different from his usual rational processes, which will surely be inhibited by programs, in an effort to suppress Data's individuality and also any moral problems with enslaving a life form as an AI slave for that matter. To me it looked like a fragment of Data, unable to stop the bigger part of the AI security program, tried to shape it's form of reaction in order to communicate that he was there, basically piggybacking a communication with memories on top of the normal security routines. Hence the Raven, which could normally be an alarm that security measures will be activated. Hence the melody, which could normally be a prompt to enter a command code - but data is able to reshape the request. Hence Moriarty shooting - it's an unavoidable security measure but Data's influence gives it the form and appearance of Moriarty. As said elsewhere, the melody could be a way to make sure Riker isn't a changeling, but I didn't see enough individual agency from Data and it conflicts with the rest of the images.
Great analysis man, but I think all the things that you feel don't make sense right now will make sense when you see how it all ends. I loved Star Trek: Armada also, I sunk an absurd amount of time into that game. Anyway I thought they were going to do something similar to your theory also, but like I say...you'll have to wait and see...
Someone posted it on Twitter and being a musician it annoys me as well: the notes that Riker lists are bogus. The tune is in D-major (what the violin starts to play, what Data tries to whistle in "Farpoint", what we see in the end credits). Riker, however, completes it out of key - in F#-major. He's no better in "Farpoint" - he completes it in E-major. That's, well, pretty darn bad for SOMEONE THAT PLAYS AN INSTRUMENT. Coming out of warp right in front of the station and THEN cloaking annoyed me AF. The least they could do is to do it behind that moon.
I play instruments, but I can't pick out what note I am hearing in a moment like that. Maybe I could if I practiced. I thought, "well, he plays trombone, he's from the future, whatever." But you broke it down in a funny way, to show that even him calling out the notes is wrong!
The meta of this show really does feel like "Weapons at Maximum!' Audiences love hearing it. Explosions make great trailers. More explosions, better trailers. Better trailers, more viewers.
@nitpicking nerd: Ironically, the thing that most annoyed you-- that Riker knew about Section 31-- could be because you forget Riker's #1 character trait: he's good at bluffing. He genuinely seemed to not know what Section 31 was, and then when Worf answered, Riker's "Oh yeah, I knew that!" was the same way Maxwell Smart would say "Oh yeah, 99, of course I knew that." I really think the scene as written was a bluff that he knew more than he did. I didn't watch the Season 3 marketing for Picard because I was so disappointed from Seasons 1 and 2 that I assumed Season 3 would be "Agatha Christies' 10 Little Indians killing off the old cast of TNG 1 by 1" so I can say that watching Moriarty with fresh eyes and no expectations it was fine. Or no worse than when Lower Decks pulls a similar stunt. The only part that made me groan was Riker's capture as I knew it would mean a trip to Nepenthe or some other excuse to get Marina Sertis involved. I agree that whatever is going on with Jack actually has more to do with Beverly than with Picard; she was able to kill a few changelings in episode 1 and she's not related to Picard, so i think she did something to Jack herself to make him a bad-ass like herself. But on this point, it could just be bad writing. I'll wait and see. Final note: I personally assumed that Vadik is actually the Female Founder stuck in the Alpha Quadrant, and that she named herself afterVedik Winn as a 'screw you!' to Odo.. But I agree that the Female Founder's whole shtick was protection of changelings, so hopefully Vadik is just an 'insane' changeling that likes killing her own kind and that's really why she was exiled to the Alpha Quadrant, similar to how Odo was exiled after he killed a changeling.
I'm getting the sense most of these "changelings" aren't actually changelings but some other form of shapeshifters that the Changelings that broke away from the Great link have co-opted, perhaps Chameloids (like the one from ST VI on Rura Penthe). Vadic likes smoking, just like the Chameloid from ST VI (even seems like the same brand of cigar/cigarello). Thin connection, sure...but I think the "boss" that speaks to Vadic is a Changeling, one of however many broke from the Great Link...also explains why Vadic would just kill that one underling like that. Wild speculation, but I think somewhat plausible.
The whole series seems like a badly written hologram program. Hey, that's it! Maybe at the end Reg Barclay will emerge from the shadows and say "End program."
Why didn't they just send photonic lifeforms like Voyager's EMH to break into Daystrom if it has such lethal security? Or they could have used the real Moriarty hologram from TNG and give him a mobile emitter and ask his help to break into Daystrom? It's weak sauce writing. Why are the changelings mimicking the Solanae? I don't understand Vadic and her crew, they don't look or act like changelings.
I cant believe that Robert Meyer Burnett and other nuTrek critics actually like this show. Outside of the nostalgia of seeing the OG cast together (which has been nice for the most part), the plot and dialogue is horrendous.
I don't know from the set dressing and the lines in the trailer kinda got the feeling they where going to use Moriarty like the Red Queen from the first Resident Evil movie; going in with that expectation I was fine with it. Also glad Moriarty didn't use a laser grid to turn either Riker or Worf jnto a pile of bloody cubes; but on the other hand Raffi did go with them so maybe somebody (not saying who 😉) could have got the Resident Evil / Red Queen treatment. I do agree that it was a bit disappointing that it wasn't the "real" Moriarty though thought he would have made a great murderous security system.
I think at this point we have to accept these aren't the same changlings for whatever reason. They have somehow been genetically manipulated and coopted or they are hybrids. Maybe skeletor forced them into this new organic/liquid hybrid form and they are working for him. As a reward he promised to change them back. Maybe the virus did this. Who knows. I'll be mad if they don't explain it but I'll wait until the end to find out.
I think the finale will have something to do with the Iromodic syndrome because both Picard and Jack have it. Maybe the Changelings need it to communicate with the portal aliens (who I imagine are speaking to Jack) and that’s why they want Jack and Picard’s body. I honestly don’t know but it seems strange that they would introduce it and do nothing with it
