"Stop breathing down my neck!" "My breathing is a simulation." "So is my neck, stop it anyway!" My favorite lines of the episode, and there were an awful lot of good lines.
It’s too bad Andy Dick is in irredeemably bastard in real life and is mostly likely responsible for getting Phil Hartman’s wife addicted to hard drugs again, causing her to murder him in cold blood with a gun. I’m glad the son a bitch was cancelled for sleeping around and just being a completely unreliable drug addict of an actor that most studios were just looking for a good excuse to stop hiring.
In terms of funniest episodes in all of _Star Trek_ history, this one ranks with "I, Mudd," "The Trouble With Tribbles," and "Trials and Tribble-ations." The best part of this episode, not involving the doctors, but just as funny, is when Seven "hangs up" on the Hirogen. Who hasn't wished we could do that to the robo-callers?
Funny thing is that the Doctor didn't tell the Prometheus EMH to do anything but press "Fire", so it's technically his fault for telling him to fire it without telling him to aim the torpedo at a target first.
Can we just appreciate the badassery of the Akira? The plan was apparently that the Akira would engage three D'deridex while the two Defiants take on the Prometheus.
just imagine that from the starfleet side beaming in expecting romulans and instead they are met with 2 MEDICAL holograms who have somehow taken control of the ship
Tbh I like it better than Voyager. Granted Voyager's design was created when the show was greenlit. Unsure when exactly the Prometheus was originally conceptualized. Some times ship designs and models get re-purposed across the shows.
They forgot: The Doctor: "You hit the wrong ship. EMH II: "It wasn't my fault!"The Doctor: "Well whose fault was it!? The torpedo's!? You're supposed to tell it what to do!"
@Főfasírozó Funnier...? Despite it's pacifistic talk they are not stupid. Or rather shouldn't be. Destroying a Prototype is way better than let it fall to an enemy.
Prometheus was hotter than shit on a San Francisco sidewalk. Starfleet Command ordered in no uncertain terms "Retake or Destroy by any means necessary."
They clarify in the episode that the Romulan ships are jamming communications so they are literally not able to communicate with each other, even if they wanted to
The excuse was it was rouge Romulans How they got 3 fully equipped ships at a time Any useful vessel was being used in the war effort in some way is beyond me.
The individuals in this accident acted without the knowledge nor the consent of the Romulan star Empire and we condemn their actions. Instant for relations primer on how you can avoid going to war when you attack someone.
The Federation was already at war with the Dominion, they couldn't afford to fight a war with the Romulan empire as well. But given how easily the Federation fleet dealt with the Romulan ships, the Romulans would be suing for peace anyway.
@@Joesolo13 that's easy to excuse how they got to romulan ships: Federation: would you care to explain how those "rogue romulans" got their hand on your ships? Romulan ambassador: probably the same way they got the Prometheus
I really wish they could've found a way to do a story like this with The Doctor and Data together. Two of the most popular characters of their shows(Seven of Nine and Worf as well) who were both yearning to be human and evolved from advanced AI to sentinent beings would've been a very compelling relationship and I think it'd be funny too with their personalities lol. Alas it wasn't meant to be.
This episode was the first time a Romulan D'deridex was destroyed on screen, and it was glorious EDIT: Somewhat mistaken here, this was the first D'deridex destroyed on screen by Star Fleet
Not so, In Star Trek The Next Generation, Season 2 episode 2, "Where Silence Has Lease" a Romulan warbird was destroyed, granted the alien Nagilum, created it inside the space void. But do agree, loved seeing that scene.
I did like the fact that they showed Starfleet firing on the Romulans, considering in TNG, Romulans fired on the Enterprise don't know how many times, and they didn't fire back. not including the aforementioned episode from TNG.
You guys are bad and should feel bad... The first time a D'deridex class ship was destroyed for real was in the episode 'Tin Man.' And you call yourselves Trekkies... tut tut
+Schwarzer Ritter...no, Bashir was intended to be the next upgrade of the EMH program, the Mark II. But his genetically enhanced condition was an issue that nearly got Bashir dismissed from StarFleet.
2:05 I remember being EXTRA excited about this episode since this was the debut of the Akira-Class Starships on tv (post First Contact), and my did she look GREAT in action.
One of the great things about the Federation is they're consistently "superior" in tactics and technology because it's an amalgamation of so many distinct cultures and species. I grew up with Star Trek, from TNG to Enterprise, which colored my perception; The Federation is an inspiration for what we can be. Something we should aspire to be (something Picard and Discovery abandoned because the writers didn't understand why that outlandish principle existed). A black captain, at a time when that was still controversial, and the series never even addressed it. "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." - MLK
They also have a tendency to over-engineer stuff. Too many "moving parts", so to speak. Important components are constantly suffering from coolant leaks or busted relays or overloads etc. etc. That, and all the rocks they store in overhead compartments...
The Federation is what a true socialist democracy should be. The Borg are what a true communist society should be. The Ferengi are what true capitalism should be. The Klingons are what a true militant group based democracy should be. The Romulans are what true fascism should be. The original show was about trying to teach Americans about the benefits of socialism without being communists during the Cold War era when anything even remotely socialist was deemed communist and was therefore the enemy.
You know, I never really thought about it, but it's actually kinda lucky that the Romulans tried to steal the Prometheus. If they never tried to steal her, she probably never would have gone within range of the alien relay network and Voyager would never have been able to send the Doctor to her. Without that, Starfleet wouldn't have known Voyager wasn't destroyed until she got home or a ship did pass within range of the network. Thus, they never would have set up a team to try to contact Voyager, and the series would have been very different.
I believe this hints that the Defiant class was getting put back into active service nad production due to the efforts of the DS9 Crew given that there where only a half dozen of them when the Defiant herself was assigned to Sisko. Why would 2 of them be following an Akira unless they were becoming more common.
More common, yes. They weren't coming out of mushroom spacedocks like spores. They're still high-maintenance. Escorting a larger asset is more in line with their original intent. Originally a prototype for a fleet, not just a class. Defiant was effective, apparently, on screen in everything from minelayer to battleship. It's shown on science duty, even though it was specifically stated lacking such specialized amenities. Prometheus was a refined warship with a higher cost, but much longer duration, endurance, and even more firepower in mind. Multi-vector mode was gimmicky to be honest. Redundancy for three effective parts is a lot less efficient than say two armed and armored halves. I imagine two three ways of going to rebuild the fleet from war losses. First, lightly armored frigates with independent multi-role capacity, long range, good speed, modest maintenance demands, and power projection on par with a heavy cruiser. Second, a less numerous warship with roughly the geometry of Defiant, slightly smaller and more compact, taking advantage of tech refinements, experience with Defiants in the field, with emphasize on greater agility and defensive weapons for escort and fleet defense rather than more powerful frontal assaults. Supplement Defiant class with lower build and maintenance costs, lower crew requirements, and more sustainable vehicle for peacekeeping. Less common, and more specialized Interceptor based on an armored Nova design, with more firepower, powerful sensors, quad nacelles, a second impulse system, and twin reactor. Splitting into two would be impressive, but probably not worth the development and construction costs.
Cause they are cutting edge porpouse built escort warships, something stafleet *doesnt have at all* bsides them, save for the prometheus, which just got stolen, and needed retaking.
Romulans are my favorite species but I always felt this episode should have had the Dominion stealing the ship. It was a perfect opportunity for a crossover episode! sigh....
+Jon Luna Not really... as the Romulans is not involve in the Dominion war as mention, it's perfectly reasonable for them to take advantage to steal some tech in the confusion of war since they became a lesser focus as oppose to the enemy the federation is engaging in open warfare.
***** About right... the Romulans only join the rest of the against the Dominion during the later stage of the war... which is season 7, before that, they were "neutral".
Voyager's EMH arrived on the Prometheus on Stardate 51462 (June 18th) in 2374, and whereas the Dominion War was 2373 - 2375, the Romulans joined the Federation Alliance on Stardate 51721.3 (September 21st) in 2374 shortly after Senator Vreenak was assassinated.
you maybe forgot that a photontorpedoe needs a certain distance of traveling before the targeting system and warhead are armed the defiant whas in the wrong place at the wrong time
Amazing in a “how could this drug addicted maniac be allowed anywhere near civilized society after what he enabled Phil Hartman’s wife to get high on cocaine again, leading her to kill her beloved character actor husband just as his Star was really starting to rise” sort of way or amazing in an “Oh My GEEERD it’s Andy Dick, I love his comedy acts and his politics because I’ve literally *NEVER* looked into what anyone who knows him personally has said about his self-destructing private life” sort of way?
... ok HOW?! they are BOTH in a Wide Shot along side the Akira class when they first appear. you practically need to be Blind not to notice two Defiant Class Ships Practically Zooming Past the Screen
@@oldtwinsna8347 why can't it be both... technically Voyager and DS9 were separate productions and they stay in their own lane for their assigned materials
This was the most funny episode ever... Goes down in the history books- these 2 are awesome together- writing was great too unless they both winged the lines!!! Timing, lines, and the way they interacted together was perfect!
if you watch the episode there's only about a dozen romulans. even if all of them where on the bridge, 2 people with weapons of that level could probably clear the bridge in a few shots.
Okay, I'm sorry, but Starfleet needs to fire whoever is in charge of programming their ships, because a simple IFF would be absurdly easy to add, and that would be enough to prevent stuff like the Prometheus attacking a Nebula-class.
It would also stop the nebula class attacking the stolen Prometheus... And prevent Voyager from stopping the Equinox that was murdering its way through the Delta quadrant. And prevent the Lakota from intercepting the Defiant that they thought was commandeered by changelings. And prevent the Enterprise-D from hunting down the Phoenix that was murdering its way through Cardassian space and about to start a war. And prevent the Excelsior going after the stolen Enterprise Seems like it would do more harm than good.
@@Slavir_Nabru I mean, the thing is, we know that starfleet in the 2260s already had command codes which could override shields and presumably weapons and other systems, had they kept such a system in place, with authorization from whichever admirals, it would allow such encounters to be even easier. Other than the Voyager vs Equinox, but I'm sure Torres could disable an IFF system.
"Okay so we beam onto the bridge, right? We beam in, phasers at the ready expecting romulans everywhere, and there's nobody there except two starfleet officers who turned out to be holograms. One of them, clearly an EMH, was wearing the old uniform. And it turns out that it was from the lost starship Voyager!"
I love how 4 phaser blasts takes out a Nebular class starship. "But wait because he split into 3 parts... it made the phasers more powerful....????" Then again 3 phaser blasts + a defiant assist = a dead Romulan Warbird lol. Who needs photon torpedoes LOL!
Colonel Jack O'Neill (Stargate SG1): "But why can't we call this ship the Enterprise?" *Names the ship Prometheus* Starfleet: "But why can't we call this ship the Prometheus?" *Names the ship Prometheus*
A) suspension of belief, to keep the plot moving forward. B) it's a prototype NX-##### , other vessels (and perhaps this one, after it's tested) may have safeties installed. C) while logical, Starfleet vessels attack each fairly regularly. The Maquis used Starfleet vessels, others might take similar measures negating the point.
Subordinate: Commander, my I speak freely?Commander: I'll permit itSubordinate: we have a ship and a means to go where we please. There is no need to take this Prometheus back to RomulusCommander: ah but they task me--wait--why does this sound familiar
A lot of people giving shit to this ship, but the overall design and technology are quite decent. The ship basically has two drone ships, each one with their own shields and weapons, this can cause target saturation, where the enemy can't concentrate on one ship, spreading out it's firepower among them all, and should the enemy concentrate on one ship, it can move back out of range and have the enemy change targets then re-engage. With the limited AI it was able to engage and defeat romulan warships. It did show flaws, such as predictable attack patterns and obviously the main section is the control for the other two drone ships whenever there is insufficient personnel, as well as we can assume that separating then will decrease the shielding they each have (but this is somewhat mitigated by the regen shielding). The biggest flaw in all of this however is the creators of the ship, the Federation. Their peace like mindedness holds the ship back, as it was clearly shown, with medical AI the ship was able to deploy and attack successfully, but even then it required patterns that can be exploited by the enemy, having a more war oriented mind, specially one with the "art of war" in mind would make this ship far deadlier, specially if depeployed in force, and would allow for a cheaper ship, as it wouldn't need med bay, mess hall, or even life support, along many other things biological entities need. There is no perfect ship, but for hit and run tactics where numbers and firepower is key, this ship fits the bill very well.
I'd simply like to add, that in Star Trek Online? This ship can nearly compete with a cruiser, like Galaxy class, but split into three and you become something like like Defiant. In the end, this ship can't defeat a full-fledged cruiser, or defeat a full-fledged escort (like Defiant)....but it can be either at any given time, and that gives it a power very few ships ever had
Lovely ship design. I wish Paramount would go back to this style of Star Trek. Oh well, at least we have The Orville. It's the closest thing to the Star Trek episodes I grew up with.
I don't care what anyone says about Voyager, the Doctor is the best character in any Star Trek series, and this was far and away the best Star Trek episode ever. Although, I'm a bit confused as to why you forgot the best exchange in the episode; "Stop breathing down my neck!" "My breathing is merely a simulation." "So is my neck, stop it anyway!"
Unless I'm mistaken I think the guy that played the lead Romulan hijacker of the Prometheus was the same one who played the Romulan scientist Telek R'Mor from when Voyager discovered that microwormhole with a temporal displacement....edit: I am mistaken....Telek R'Mor was played by Vaughn Armstrong and Rekar, the lead Romulan hijacker was played by Judson Scott...guess all Romulans look alike to me LOL :-P
Just imagine the severity officers reporting back. "Sir, ship is surcure. Romulans are all unconscious. The ship is under command by two EMH a mark 1&2. The mark one says he's from a ship in the delta quadrant."
It would have been great if Starfleet chose to send Tric(EMH Mark 2, it's what they call him in the novel Star Trek: Prometheus) to Voyager along with the Doctor. Why, just imagine the madness that these two EMHs would get up to? 😆😆😆
How about some torpedoes, coupled with phaser dimpling and transporting Starfleet Marines onboard, Bonchune? You have 128 marines and a shotload of torpedoes.
Nope, seriously so much of their tech is underused. Picard literally used a holographic submachine gun to kill the Borg simply by disabling the safety of the holograms allowing them to cause damage. Another time, one of the officers managed to turn his com badge into a personal shield to block attacks. None of these show themselves later.
I'm partial to the Constellation-class myself, but - for the practical reason of not getting blown to hell if I got in a fight - I'd go for something like a Nebula or Galaxy class.
Thought that at first, but there is a simple explanation. The hologram had not targeted anything. Unlike a torpedo, which you can just chuck straight out of the tube and let it target the first thing it locks on, with a phaser, you have to aim it *somewhere*.
