Pike has the best faces that scene. Ortegas starts her bit, he jumps out of his chair and stands back a bit, a real "WTF?!" moment. Una pitches in, another step sideways to gain distance. They make eye contact, and he just shakes his head to say "What was that? You don't sing." Then La'an comes in, silent at first, he relaxes. Then she starts singing, and he has this "There goes our last brain cell..." face. Speaking of La'an, she's looking at everybody as if to challenge them. Ortegas and the navigator (I cannot remember her name, no matter what I do) doing their checks in perfect musical sync while being weirded out by it was just a great deatil.

to best communicate to the viewer that something was off the first person to sing needed to be the most unlikely. Therefore he was the logical choice. From there the next step had to be a duet. Then an ensemble progressively demonstrating the extent of the anomaly. If it was anything less than that it could be interpreted as an isolated problem, or a single person who was just being silly. If someone at your job started to sing for no reason would you even raise an eyebrow? probably not.

Anyone else notice the fact that the song they play in to the Subspace thingy that starts the plot is "Anything goes, by Cole Porter". A song about big changes to previously established things and how jarring that can be to the people living through those changes. As others have said, it's the little moments that really ice this already lovely cake. I especially love Pike's reaction to Ortegas. Up until that point, he's only been hearing members of the crew singing over comms. Even his own first line of "It's happening again" is more kind of spoken, so there's just that little look of uncertainty when he delivers it. But when Ortegas sings, it's the first time he actually sees/hears it happening in person and he's immediately like "OK, what the Farragut is happening?!!" 😁

Yeah I kinda like how she is basically written as an opposition to overly complex super deep characters. She flies. She's the best at it. And everyone loves her for being super authentic and straight forward. A well written character doesn't need to have over9000 layers to their personality.

I've been watching Star Trek since the 1970's and this is the most f'ed up thing I've ever seen. I HATE musicals, but this is fun, weird, and hilarious! Trek hasn't done anything that was truly fun and funny is a long time! The looks on Spock's and Pike's faces are what sell it for me. "Risk, gentlemen, risk is our business!" - the writers knew this, took a chance, and (for the first time in a long time) knocked it out of the park!

I along with probably 99.999% of the people reading this rolled my eyes when I heard they were making this episode... fully expected some campy BS thing that would piss every trek fan off... instead we got one of the best hours of Trek.. ever.... which includes the single funniest moment in Trek history (lets go Klingons! lol) .... I give the Producers props for the balls to make this episode.. especially since it includes the first mention of Carol Marcus and the next episode may be the darkest episode of the series (and brought in Scotty)

Musicals are not for everyone, I really dislike them... however, a well executed song will always be enjoyable, regardless of the awkwardness of the situation. This first song was decent, Spock had the best solo act of the entire episode (his "I'm the X" song is legitimately good), then Klingons as comedy relieve... really, even if you despise musicals, those moments are so entertaining, if you are not dead inside, you will at least crack a little smile (I mean, a vulkan calculating a romantic breakup, this is great)

What's really interesting is the crewman, and yes I include the ladies in this term, in the background behind Pike playing the Communications console like an organist would a pipe organ. That was brilliant on the shows part or even on the part of the cast member if they did it spontaneously while videoing. I would have said filming but they don't do that any more. Too bad about that because the blooper reels for this show would be so much fun to see.

I usually hate musical episodes, because a lot of the time it's just the cast singing already popular songs the entire episode for no real reason whatsoever. But this episode? They BUILT IT INTO THE PLOT. They WROTE THEIR OWN MUSIC AND SONGS AND EVEN DANCE NUMBERS. All of it felt natural for the characters and the show instead of OOC, and the way the numbers enhanced or inconvenienced the characters during this episode was very well thought-out. I genuinely squeaked when I realized Christine breaking up with Spock was the "villain song" of the musical, and the fact that they realized they had to follow the rules of a musical was the cherry on top. Everything coalesced into a grand finale that felt neither forced nor undeserved, and it was all just so so brilliant. You can tell the cast really enjoyed this episode a lot as well, as none of them looked stiff or uninterested in their performance but genuinely committed and engaged. THIS is how you do a musical episode, people. I can understand how anyone who hates musicals would hate this episode, but as someone who casually enjoys the odd musical this episode was so much fun for me to watch.
