Star Trek: The Next Generation - Booby Trap - DVD vs. Blu-ray comparison 

The "darker" shadows of the Enterprise exterior shots are likely how it was originally filmed. The effects team, I imagine, ramped up the brightness in editing to compensate for the lower resolution at the time so viewers at home watching on late '80s/1990s TVs could still see all of the ship against a mostly black star field. With everyone owning 720p, 1080p and 4K high rez TVs today, watching this on Blu-ray and streaming services, the clarity of the original shots, richer shadows and all, can finally come through as intended.

In general I have to commend the team that worked on this, as they clearly tried extremely hard to be very respectful of the original material and recreate it as best they could. This is a VAST improvement to the horror show that was the original series remasters with all of the original effects totally discarded and replaced with tacky 2007 cgi. I'm happy to see that with Next Gen they actually tried to simply recreate the shots exactly as they were, but in higher resolution. This was done with love. We can nitpick at details, and true, I'm not in love with the digital model of the Enterprise D, but the fact that they even digitally matched the lighting that was on the physical model? That took a lot of time and care.

I am amazed how they did match up the asteroids so close to the original - it isn't perfect as you can see some missing or slight position differences when you compare like this but it is like 90% the same. It might sound like a silly thing to someone who isn't a fan but you get used to seeing things a certain way and you can just tell when they are changed even if you are not sure what - their attention to detail in trying to match that stuff up is crazy.

At 11:05 there is a mistake in the blu-ray version. The Enterprise has become the generations enterprise not the TNG enterprise. the differences that can be seen are the stripe on the neck has change to generations and there was a detail that was added to the back of the nacelle for generations that can be seen in this shot.

Picard has the S3 "V2" '(no seams) uniform in this episode, the other senior officers have the V1. Riker joins in with the V2 in the next episode. (Maybe others?) I wasn't even aware they had a gradual change until I saw the Blu ray.

It's darker because it's no longer overexposed. lol

Sadly, they remastered Geordi's failing love life to perfection.

I'm amazed that they didn't fix the out-of-sync starfield as the camera swings around the ringed planet at 2:56. That's always jumped out at me. Is there a wormhole behind that planet or something?

3:40 have you forgotten the ‘warp effect and title card’ excerpt? As your text descriptions and following examples seem to skip along one at around this point. Otherwise, an excellent compilation as ever, for my money CBS digital could’ve been a tad more creative with the ‘asteroids’ as they do look rather obviously repeated in some shots.

By the way, was the entire score for this episode played on a cheesy Yamaha DX-7? It sounds pitiful!

Is the newer blue ray box set (the green one) in a 16: 9 format???
