Star Trek Voyager Special Features - A Day in the Life of Ethan Phillips A rare glimpse into a day on the set in which Phillips reveals the lengthy makeup process and shooting schedule involved in making a Voyager episode. Enjoy :D
Many people don't realize the amount of work that goes on during makeup and the patience the actor has to endure (not counting learning their lines) to get what we see and take for granted on the screen. Thanks for all the work the dedicated actors who give us what we see.
Out of all of this what sticks with me the most is Ethan Philips' humor and how amazingly sarcastic he is that I don't know whether or not he's being serious.
I watched a video recently with the DS9 cast talking on a Zoom chat and Armin Shimmerman was saying that he made so much money from Overtime due to having to go in early and leave late for Makeup that he paid off his mortgage with it.
gotta respect him for sitting there, all that time, for all those eps. it's not just putting it on, but also taking the stuff of. the glue can irritate, and removing it can hurt a lot too.
Have the Voyager box set. In one of the special features interviews, Kate Mulgrew states that in seven years of working with Ethan on the set, she never heard him complain once about all the hours he spent in the make-up chair. She had real admiration for his professionalism.
I love NEELIX, everything about his character I love, and voyager is my second fave trek series..all you nasty people leaving bad comments, if you dont like him why are you watching this interview?
I know this is 10 years old, but I’m watching the interview because I respect Ethan Phillips as an actor, but choosing to play Neelix is a pox on his home.
and when the characters all had depth, even ones that would only make 1 appearance, some shows from now still get it and put real effort in liuke The Expanse and The Orville 😈
Amen to that! Also a now forgotten time where make-up artists were allowed to apply their trade and apply prosthetics instead of going the cheap route and using silicon masks......
What Ethan Phillips went through to be Neelix. I don’t know how the hell he did it! And what was so hilarious: whenever he got passionate and over dramatic, his false teeth would come flying out of his mouth like projectiles! Absolutely freaking hilarious!😂😂🤣
Magical times where so much stuff was being done without CGI everywhere... I watched TNG/DS9/VOY in the 90s and will probably still watch them till the day I die! Also: is Neelic the most polarizing character in the franchise? There are so many people who seem to hate his guts, and there are people like me who absolutely adore him...
Yeah he is amazing... he is 'fake it untill you make it' character. In a universe where every 'starfleet' character has its act 100% together... i guess thats why he stands out.
NEELIX is my second favorite character on Voyager. He’s just so cute adorable, funny and just so cool. Ethan Phillips does such a great job with this character. I fell in love with him from day one. Thanks for reading, take care, take it easy and be safe
I love Neelix! I hate Neelix haters! What other people think is annoying, I think its funny. Also, random fact: today, 2/7, is Ethan's birthday!!!!! (Don't ask me how I know that; I am such a Trek nerd!!!!LOL!!!!!!!!)
I always liked the character Neelix... the reason I looked this up was ... tonight I saw a character on "Rizzoli & Isles" I Kissed a Girl (2010)... I knew it was him, but still had to look it up. :) what's funny is, Voyager is on right now ... :)
I love Ethan. Damn, it's so painful to be sitting there for hours twice a day for prothetics. You just hope you wont get itchy during the day lol No wonder Ethan was such a rascal and farting everywhere on set hahaha
Ethan Phillips definitely suits Neelix better than the Ferengi he played. I swear that he sounded as though he got a bit tearful when he mentioned his deviated septum. Such a happy handsome soul. Embrace your uniqueness.
Dude, we're living in the golden age of television. Everywhere you look you see big-budget, high production value, intricately plotted, emotionally and thematically rich drama. The crappy reality TV has always been there, and always will be, but you must be blind if you thing that's all there is.
Nelix is my favorite character! His pleasant, sweet, caring and loyal personality come very natural to him. Anyone that talks with him feels at ease and cheers up instantly. Who wouldn't want to have a friend like that in their life?!?! As for the 2+ hours of makeup, just sit back, close your eyes, relax and enjoy what feels like a soft face massage. :) Not bad.
I hate smoking but shut the fuck up about him smoking or any other person. Everyone at this point knows the health risks and does not need a lecture nor a reminder of those risks. It’s a choice and their choice as adults.
Sit in a chair while they put that crap on you for 2+ hours, put in half a day re-doing takes, and another hour to take the stuff off again. No picnic there..
..did he really said that he was sitting for 22 straight hours in that chair?!? First he said it will took about 2 hours, then that follow up claim totally confused me.
One place near lakes on voyager. He is a great actor I watch It show. We're annoying go to.He's amazing, not Jordan Cho at once a time.Thank you for all your acting your biggest fan james perry
why are you on this vid then if you hate neelix? and why do you hate neelix anyway, he was one of the best characters in voyager imo the others seemed a bit dull and boring. My favs were neelix and the doc
Why am I here? Because I watched a different behind the scenes clip, and RU-vid recommended this to me. Even if I dislike a character and show, the behind the scenes info is still intellectually interesting.
Would it be "sad" to see him with a super-sized meal from McDonalds, playing rough-and-tumble tackle football, or walking around with a giant eclair? All of those things will make you sick and potentially kill you slowly, too, and the more of it you do, the more likely you'll eventually pay for it. I don't personally smoke, not at all. Never have. I do,however, think that the social stigma that's been built up around it has gotten pretty silly in how extreme people let their emotions get over it (as in, they watch a video like this, and all they can think of is the last two seconds of the video that featured a cigarette). For some people, smoking has almost become like a "sin" that'll send you straight to Hell, rather than what it really is ... one potential unhealthy habit vice out of literally thousands that humanity indulges in. FFS, everyone picks their poisons. Not a person in this world lives completely clean. Why is it a cigarette that people never hesitate to comment on?
We need a Voyager Movie now! I have a great script idea! Will bring back entire crew, and they have a great mission! Lots of built in theatergoers! Will do great at the box office, or I will give a refund!
i love he's character in star trek voyager he's fan 2 watch love he's voice would meet him in real life tell him i am fan of you're character you're voice get me attracted even more because you're so amazing character loved him every second of him allot
@@julier.1902 Her leaving was weird, too. She gets possessed by the spirit of some warlord, and says a bunch of things that she doesn't really mean (because it's not really her). During this, she breaks up with Neelix. In the end, they do a sci-fi exorcism to get rid of the warlord. Like 6 episodes later, Neelix is taking about how they're not together anymore. I was very very confused when they broke up. Apparently it was the warlord possession episode. I thought I had missed something so I backed up and watched all of the episodes very closely. Yup, it was when she was possessed and not herself. Also, her sudden long hair was never explained or acknowledged at all. I looked it up. Apparently the prosthetic ears were causing skin trouble, so they gave her long hair to cover her ears. Ok, that's fair, I can understand that, but giving it a one-sentence explanation on the show would have really helped.
@@julier.1902 I got a notification that you responded to me, but I cannot see your response. From the notification, I can see something about looking her up on IMDB. Yes, I did, but that was like 5-10 years ago, so my memory is a little fuzzy. Sorry, can't say more, since RU-vid is being weird and not showing me what you wrote.
@@julier.1902 I just did. Jennifer Lien. Interesting. There's really not much about her on IMDb. 12 titles to her name. She left Voyager in 2000 and her last role was 2001. She gave birth in 2002 and changed to a medical career in 2003. There's a quote about how she didn't feel that acting fit into her lifestyle anymore. Also, there were rumors of mental health issues, substance abuse, and addiction. Apparently those rumors were true. It gets weird. In April 2015, she was charged with resisting arrest and a variety of other crimes after she rammed her car into a police cruiser. Then, in September 2015, she went off on a woman, and exposed herself to the woman and her children. When police arrived, she was naked under a blanket and resisted arrest, threatening to have them killed. Then there's several arrests for DUI and driving without a license in 2017/2018. Holy moly, I just spent the last hour reading about all this. That was a wild ride.
Neelix was awesome; he saved the neck of the crew more than once, and he had a knack for anticipating the crew's needs before they knew they needed it ... like a galley on the ship to stretch replicator rations, a Delta quadrant ambassador, morale-boosting parties and celebrations, etc. Did you honestly miss the Wesley Crusher era?
My least favorite character was Torres. The "anger" side of her came up in too many scenes. She should have been reprimanded for all her unauthorized actions and disrespect to senior officers. I just didn't like her character. At all.
@@titaniumspecial4207 Judging is human nature. You did it too, with your comment. I'm doing it right now. You'll find an element of judgment in almost every comment. "I like this" is still a judgement
