Think of it this way. You are in the 70s and you have never seen special effects like this before. You've never seen spaceships that actually look like they are... you know ... in space! You have probably seen special effects 100 times better since then with CGI. (I just noticed you are watching the version Lucas redid with CGI inserts... totally not needed) What they did with models in this movie was like what Avatar did with CGI. All of the laser blasts were hand-painted onto the film print. No computer video editing, all film. It was something totally new and incredible to see in 1977. (fellow nerds, let me know if I am wrong on any of that) My comment from your Spaceballs post: Now if you do happen to watch Star Wars, you will be laughing at gags you remember from Spaceballs. Love the channel! May the Schwartz be with you. Empire Strikes Back next... and don't read or research any spoilers!

I was 12 years old when this appeared out of nowhere in the summer of 1977, and suddenly there were monster lines stretching around theaters all summer long. I saw it in theaters at least a dozen times that year, and it was as close to a religious awakening as any movie experience has ever been. Will ever be. Could ever be. Love eternal.

Remember, there was no streaming no downloads no RU-vid nothing like that. to see Star Wars you had to go to the theater. There was no home movie systems at all and this was brand new completely cutting edge and so the story goes episode 4, 5 and six and then it goes back to 1, 2 and 3, and then it goes even bigger. So next is the Empire Strikes Back, and then Return of the Jedi. And you didn’t get to see the Empire strikes back for at least a year and a half to two years and the same for Return of the Jedi you had to wait for the continuation of the story.

When this first came out, it was revolutionary for special effects. Nothing in the space scenes was computer generated or animated, it was all real, practical effects. You can watch various documentaries that go through the process George Lucas went through with miniature models for things like the Falcon, Death Star, Alderaan, etc. There are some small effects, mostly on Tattooine, where George Lucas went back in the 90s as computer CGI became possible, and he added in/edited some things to "update" the looks. If you look at it, you can easily spot the few aliens that are CGI and which ones were from the original, where they were all people in costumes. Part of why so many of the effects hold up is because they weren't constrained by the computer technology of the 70s, but were all practical. This was also not expected to be a success by most of the people in the movie. Alec Guiness (Obi-Wan) was a very well-known actor with a lot of prestige. He thought it was an easy paycheck for a "silly movie". It was a surprise to everyone how much of a hit it was. It was also a movie that went through extensive editing by Lucas' wife that turned it from a bloated mess of a script into one of the best screenplays of all time (search up "Star Wars saved in the edit" for a more full picture of how much she saved the project). George Lucas was also friends with Stephen Spielberg, who consulted on some things. It launched the careers of Harrison Ford (Han Solo) who is also Indiana Jones, and was in several other older movies (and in an upcoming MCU movie). You might also know Luke (Mark Hamill) as the voice of the Joker in the DC animated movies/shows and the voice of Fire Lord Ozai in Avatar: The Last Airbender (among other things). Excited to see the Star Wars journey continue. After Episode 5 and 6, you will want to watch episode 1, 2, 3, and then the Star Wars Clone Wars series (the Clone Wars is a bit of a commitment but becomes so worth it). Those were all the projects that were released before Disney bought Star Wars. There's a lot of content after that point, but it's a long way out.

Yeah. Now, Disney has ruined, not only Star Wars but, Marvel MCU too. We may never get decent Star Wars Marvel productions again. Paramount continues to destroy Star Trek. Warner not doing well with DC either. They're ruining the best franchises we've ever had.

@@tahliasgoddaddy I don't know how you can argue that for Marvel when Disney Marvel Studios gave us everything from Avengers onward. If it fell off, it was long after Disney bought it.
@tahliasgoddaddy
@tahliasgoddaddy 6 месяцев назад
It was since Disney bought it. After Avengers Endgame which had already been written basically, they set about destroying the franchise. It had already started with the first Captain Marvel movie which was pretty bad. After Endgame they doubled down. The Spider-Man that came out after while not terrible was somewhat of a letdown. They did a decent series WandaVision then ruined Falcon and the Winter Soldier which I had really looked forward to. Hawkeye was a big disappointment. Loki wasn't as good as it should've been. Then there was the dumpster fire SheHulk. I've given up on them completely. Love and Thunder? Give me a break. Etc etc. Disney even tried to ruin Snow White. It's been put on hold because of the backlash but, I fully expect they will still make a mockery of the iconic children's classic. It's what Disney is doing now. DEI trumps producing a good story the fans might enjoy. It's all about virtue signaling now.
@jackmanalope
@jackmanalope 6 месяцев назад
@@tahliasgoddaddy Disney bought Marvel in 2009. Endgame was not written by then. At most it was a concept. The change in the MCU since Endgame is real but it’s more to do with the success of Phase 3 and the restructuring with Perlmutter/Feige which happened long after Disney bought Marvel.
@tahliasgoddaddy
@tahliasgoddaddy 6 месяцев назад
@@jackmanalope The change is them concentrating on DEI instead of story quality. If you can't see that, then you're part of the problem, not just in relation to entertainment but also, in the world's current spiral into disaster. Great reaction to this classic you two... To explain what happened to Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi is that he became one with the light side of the force (he ascended to a higher form of existence within the force, sort of leveled up, lol). He said to Darth Vader in their last battle "You can't win Darth, if you strike me down I shall become more powerful that you can possibly imagine". He disappeared from the natural world before Vader struck him with lightsaber, which confused Vader & that is why he stomped on the robes to see if any trace of him remained. Now Obi-Wan is untouchable from the natural world but he can still look after and communicate with Luke through the power of the force (a type of immortality for Obi-Wan). This ability of the force is only reserved to the good light side Jedis'...Evil dark side Sith Lords cannot achieve that and would pass away if they were struck down... Also the lightsaber colors have different meanings (Blue - represents loyalty, stability, truth & justice. They are the Jedi Guardians. Green - represents growth, safety, harmony & knowledge. They are the Jedi Consulars. Purple - represents nobility, strength, wisdom & balance. They are the Jedi Grand Masters. Red - represents darkness, aggression, anger & hatred. Red is only used by evil Sith Lords). I hope you both continue your Star Wars journey with Episode V: The Empire Strike Back, for it is even better than the last one. (No spoilers) there you will see the rebellion fight to survive as the empire aggressively seeks them out (they're all pretty mad about the Death Star being destroyed by the rebellion) as Han, Chewie, Leia, C-3PO & R2-D2 make new friends and new enemies along the way. You will also learn more about the Jedi way of life and more about the force as Luke searches for the mysterious character named Yoda. And you finally will learn all the full details of what actually happened to Luke's father before Darth Vader betrayed and murdered him. Brace yourself for this next middle chapter of this great original trilogy & may the force be with you....

1. Sir. Alec Guinness/Obi-Wan didn't want the part. Being a Shakespearian actor, he thought the entire idea was silly and was beneath him, but his wife talked him into taking the part. 2. The shrug Chewy gives Luke after he scares the tiny black droid is 🤪 3. These movies were put out in a certain order because there was limited technology and Lucas used and pushed forward the images needed to make a quality product. The best way to watch the is in the order they came out. We had to wait years for the next one. There was no internet where we had access to them whenever we wanted. 4. No need to go into anything after VI. Disney took over and the quality dropped. I realize you have to. 5. The only CGI was put in for the 25th anniversary package in this film are the critters the stormtroopers were riding at the beginning of the search for the robots, a couple of the huge critters outside the pub and the scene with Jabba the Hutt. Those were put in later after CGI was available. Otherwise, everything is what we had in 1977. 6. Obi-Wan sacrificed himself after he told Vader he would be stronger than ever. He went back into the force. He knows it's Luke's job to take over. 7. The awkwardness in the detention space is because Ford didn't know his lines. It was kept in the movie anyway because it worked. 8. The next two are the best of the Lucas series. Enjoy

Up until Star Wars was released in 1977, there were virtually no "lovable" robots/androids in cinematic films. There was the very likable "Robbie the Robot" from the classic 1958 film, "Forbidden Planet", but aside from that, I can think of no others. R2D2 and C3PO were instantly loved by audiences. R2D2, especially, made audiences cry whenever he was in danger! They inspired a great many future films that featured lovable robots.

Race riots were prevalent in the US right up until 1969, just 5 years before Lucas finished his first draft of Star Wars. Until quite recently, from Lucas's perspective in 1974, most white owned bars reacted to black people entering their establishment similarly to how the bar person reacts to the droids in the cantina scene. In fact the relationship between humans and droids mirrors the relationship that had once existed between white and black people: master and slave. It's a real world analogy, essentially.

Obviously Star Wars made the sci-fi fantasy genre relevant and changed special effects forever. 33:11 This duel is a bit low key because it’s the first light saber battle shown in the series. The director just had the actors do basic fencing moves. However, with each movie the lightsaber battles will get more and more chaotic. The writers actually invented multiple styles of lightsaber fighting to make such scenes really pop. For example, Obi-Wan is a master of Form III that is very strong on defense. He basically blocks everything until his opponent is worn out. Vader’s style is Form V which favors aggressive overwhelming attacks. They are basically the ultimate counter to one another’s styles. Someone actually made an animated version of this duel is longer and shows what two Force wielders can do when pulling out all the stops. You can find it on RU-vid.

_A long time ago, in a movie theater about 50 miles away ..._ *THERE WAS NO EPISODE TITLE* The studio didn't think this film would make much money. Lucas was crossing his fingers that it didn't bomb. For all he knew, Lucas was making one standalone movie. "Episode IV" and "A New Hope" were added in later releases, to be in line with the numbering adopted with Episode V. I first saw _Star Wars_ in 1977, at the Indian Hills Theater in Omaha, Nebraska, US (a city of about 1M). The Indian Hills was one of the last remaining Cinerama theaters in existence (it's long gone, now). Cinerama was an experimental widescreen format seen in the 1950s and 1960s. It had an extremely curved screen, such that films shot in Cinerama used _three cameras_ and _three projectors_ : one for the center of the screen and one for each side. Everything had to be constantly synchronized so that the film looked normal onscreen. If you see Cinerama films on DVD/Bluray/streaming today, it often looks distorted on the left and right. This is caused by converting a curved film to a flat screen. So there I was at the Indian Hills at the tender age of 12 -- the film's precise target demographic. The Indian Hills seated 810 patrons: 662 on the main floor and 148 in the balcony. It was completely packed, as was every screening of _Star Wars_ in every theater in the world, until the film left theaters. I'd gotten to the theater rather late, forcing me to sit in the center seat of row one. This turned out to be fantastically good bad luck. Today, the center of row one is a terrible seat due to parallax distortion. In a theater the size of the Indian Hills, that distortion didn't exist because the screen was far enough away from the seats. However, it was close enough so that it filled my field of view from top to bottom. The screen was large and curved enough so that it filled my field of view from periphery to periphery. _Star Wars_ was shot in CinemaScope, a more popular widescreen format that we still see today. While not technically the same as Cinerama, it still lent itself well to that screen. I watched _Star Wars_ with the film filling my entire field of view from top-to-bottom and side-to-side. I didn't have to turn my head to watch it unless I wanted to, and I usually didn't. It was an astonishingly immersive experience. Not even IMAX comes close. Add to that the massive audience reaction that shouldn't be overlooked. It was a shared experience that I've only seen at _Infinity War_ and _Endgame_ on their opening nights, when there were a lot of fans present. This audience reaction happened at every screening, in every theater, everywhere in the world, until _Star Wars_ left the screens. Imagine 810 people all cheering, clapping, jumping to their feet, and occasionally crying all at once. The shared experience was amazing, as it fed on itself. No one held back, it just kept growing and growing until the destruction of the Death Star -- which prompted massive roaring from the audience. The film itself was like nothing put to the screen at that time. While cinematically based on old _Flash Gordon_ and _Buck Rogers_ movie serials of the 1930s, this was a big-budget, big-screen version like nothing anyone had ever seen before. It completely changed science fiction on the movie screen. Until that time, you occasionally got a good science fiction film, but they tended to be years apart. After _Star Wars_ , there were multiple good science fiction movies every year, a trend that continues to this very day. There would be no modern _Star Trek_ without _Star Wars_ . _Star Wars_ was such a massive hit for 20th Century-Fox that Paramount quickly looked around and said, "Aha! We have this _Star Trek_ thing that Trekkies are always saying they want more of. Let's make it into a movie!" Thus _Star Trek - The Motion Picture_ was released in 1979. Without that, there would be no _Star Trek_ today. _Star Wars_ changed filmmaking from a business perspective. The film grabbed audiences like nothing seen in the entire history of cinema. While _Jaws_ was technically the first summer blockbuster, _Star Wars_ cemented summer as the time to release action-heavy, family-friendly films. The special effects of _Star Wars_ were utterly innovative, and the tools created by the likes of John Dykstra became commonplace in films that don't even have special effects. Almost all special effects in the Original Trilogy were achieved either in-camera, with optical effects, miniatures, extremely detailed paintings, or a combination of those techniques. CGI that allows an entire film to be shot on a green screen wasn't even a glimmer in anyone's eye. In 1977, the most advanced computers were the size of an SUV and didn't have the computing power of your phone. CGI as a primary filmmaking technique wasn't popularized until _Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow_ in 2004. By then, computing power/square centimeter had skyrocketed exponentially. The special effects spawned Industrial Light and Magic, a company created and owned by George Lucas. ILM is still in existence today, constantly innovating with new technologies to create visual effects for many, many films and TV series. From it's inception, ILM has been considered the gold standard of VFX companies. In short, this film was nothing like what had come before. It changed _everything about cinema_ . And I got to see it with an audience of 810, on a screen so immersive that I got nauseous during the Trench Run.

George Lucas, the director of the movie and the creator of the series, began it by going into the middle of the story he was telling because the whole was way too dense, so he chose to release the shortest and simplest chapter first, Episode 4, and went from there Episodes 5 and 6 continues the story He was going to try to do more but the technology of the time wasn't where George wanted it so he put the series on hold until 1995-1997 when computer-generated effects were advanced enough to make the prequels Around the time he started developing that trilogy, the 20th anniversary of the originals was coming up so he tested the CG on a Special Edition of all three movies, bringing them to the screen like he originally wanted but couldn't because the 1970s and 1980s had limited technological resources on how George wanted his movies to look That 1997 edition of the trilogy showed a whole new generation this masterpiece and the phenomenon has been growing larger ever since with NO SIGNS OF STOPPING Once again, I'm glad you've decided to finally join in the fun The Special Edition is what you watched, only this is the 3rd iteration of the edition shown in 1997 For example, Jabba (that slug creature) looked NOTHING like on here the computer model look more cartoony; this version is much better; plus, Jabba wasn't even in the original release in 1977 the scene was cut for budget and time reasons Han shooting Greedo (the green alien with the funny mouth) has been changed 3 times and you can look that up online Sound and visuals were all enhanced too You can look up the differences online

George actually had plans when beginning with Return of the Jedi to make another trilogy but I can't tell the subject because it will be huge spoilers. He went thru a difficult divorce and felt worn out so he scrapped the idea of a new trilogy and wrapped it up by editing in the big reveal in ROTJ.

"Star Wars": Two young RU-vid viewers are boarding the "Tantive IV." What will they make of this "old, long, slow-moving, character-centered, jargon-filled, no-DFX" movie? Good, you're watching in Release Order, which is how I started in 1977.;) Note: "Star Wars" is Fantasy/Space Opera, "Star Trek" is science fiction. (At least it was in the 1970's.)

There will be highs and lows during this great enterprise of flicks. It was originally slated for 1 movie, with an outside chance for more to come if this performed well enough in the theaters. Most in the business thought, at best it would end up bringing in only what is cost to make. Lucas, the executive producer took rights to all merchandising in lieu of a generous payment. That deal wound up being the greatest in film history.

Hello! I remember seeing Star Wars in 1977 when I was about ten years old, in Los Angeles. I think this movie changed everyone’s lives. Movies like this did not exist before this, and it was a mind-opening adventure seeing this in the theatres. *As luck would have it, some friends from the neighborhood and I somehow got a ride to Mann’s Chinese Theater to be present when the three characters’ footprints were placed in cement, in 1977! And a photo of this was on the cover of Famous Monsters magazine, shortly thereafter.*

Consider the following, gang. Roughly 41 years spanned between the release of the first Flash Gordon Saturday matinee movie serial (one of the primary inspirations for Star Wars) in 1936 and the debut of SW in 1977. At the time I'm composing and posting this message, almost 47 (FORTY-SEVEN) years have passed since Star Wars itself was released! And in 1977 I thought 1936 was "ancient history". Mercy, do I ever feel old!

Not impressed by light speed. Ohhh, these young-ins. Jaded by seeing too much modern technology. "That was pretty good". 🤣 soooo, not blown away I guess. Jyn> "Darth Vader is pretty cool" 😂 Darth went to the Dark Side, keep in mind Obi Wan gave up his life for the cause of the Good side of the Force. So by giving up his life, his Life Force (spirit) became stronger in order to help Luke etc. You may detect the loose analogy to Christianity/Biblical influences in what The Force is all about..... You need to watch the next 2 Star Wars to find out more background on Darth Vaders back story. The next one, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, is the favorite of many of us in the SW series. It's got tons of action/adventure. I think now that you know the main characters, you will really enjoy EMPIRE.

Now you have started the Star Wars journey, enjoy.. the special effects will improve over the decades between 1977 & 2010... After episodes V, VI you will do episodes I, II, & III then before episodes VII, IIX & IX you will need to see SOLO a Star Wars story & Rouge One the story of how the rebels obtained the plans for the Death Star.

Yes, Ben / Obi-Wan is "dead" as far as no longer being living flesh, bone and blood. Upon death, a Jedi who has studied a certain technique in order to achieve the ability, disappears upon "death" and becomes "one with the Force". In that condition, the "Force ghost" is able to communicate with living, Force-sensitive beings. That is why Obi-Wan told Vader that if Vader struck him down, he'd become more powerful. Obi-Wan sacrificed himself purposely, giving up his physical body in order "level up".

The Star Wars films (the ones that were done before George Lucas sold the company to Disney) tell stories on a number of levels. If you “zoom out’ for the wide view, they are the story of Darth Vader. (Vader, and Obi-Wan are the only human characters who appear in all six films. R2 and C-3PO are also in all six.) In episode IV, which you’ve just seen, if you listen closely to some of the dialogue, it partly answers some questions regarding Vader: Vader and the other high-ranking military leaders on the Death Star, for the most part do not have any clear hierarchy with regard to one another. They only know three things for certain: 1) ALL of the military (and Vader) answer to the Emperor, and are afraid of him. (The Emperor is not seen in Episode IV). 2) Governor Tarkin is (was) THE regional authority in charge of the Death Star. Vader and the others answered to him, in the Emperor’s absence, which is why Tarkin had authority over Vader and could give Vader orders. 3) Vader and the Emperor are the only two beings in the Empire that know how to use the Force as a weapon or meaningful tool; they represent the ‘mystical power’ in the Empire, which puts them outside of, and transcending the military.
